I agree... All Windows 10 was supposed to do is fix the unpopular Win 8 GUI. Nothing more. Who ever said it was going to be "something special"? Win 10 seems to be fairly solid and good, runs well here, seems pretty clean and quick, what more does one need from an OS?

Windows never was, nor will it, be any kind of special. It doesn't even make the grade of good. XP was the best effort, and still beats the pants off 7.

    What more does one need....
Something that lives up to expectations.
Performs as expected, and including performance over time. Windows is notorious for becoming a slug almost as soon as you start moving from the default setup. Install and remove stuff while getting the config right, and it's a downright sloth. Off course, recent processors and RAM tech help, but is there any need for this level of hardware for such a simplistic approach to computing?
    Lack of configurability.
Lack of consideration of the end user.

While other variants of what seems to be the same basic core setup were at least able to be somewhat controlled by the users preference (though not nearly enough), 10 takes things far further with the death grip of control. No thanks.

I think many folks who didn't participate in betas or follow ms development expected it to be special, compared to its previous incarnations, and therefore ,the lack of "killer features" wouldn't have been obvious from the beginning.Marketing hype by MS convinced me for one that it would be more than just a windows 8 fix.Windows 10 DID need to be special imo .The fact that it isn't ,is probably the reason why MS decided to give it away free.

Disagree. An OS is something more an handheld calculator. OSs are a piece of our life: people use them to work, to study, to communicate and to relate, to do scientific research, to enjoy, to resolve many personal needs, to do social and political activities, to debate, for personal hobbies.... Why OSs should not try to ensure personal data security and privacy, why they should not always enhance and increase options and possibility for such a large area of users and uses ? Why the OSs should not be esthetically nice, customizable and pleasant ? People spend a lot of time with them.

Microsoft did. They didn't call it 8.2, or 8.1SPsthg, nor even Windows 9. They "sold" it to the public by calling it Windows 10. That's why users were waiting for more I guess.
It's not free. It only seems to be. But you pay for it by all the data and meta-data that's leaked back to their servers.

Agree wholly ,though previous incarnations of windows leaked stuff back to MS and you did have to pay for the privilege ;) though I do think windows 10 has taken it to a whole new level.

They didn't really fix it with 8.1, they just made 8.0 tolerable with 8.1 You still had the awful hybrid schizo 2 worlds to deal with (Metro and Normal). 10 actually took all that hybrid crap and integrated it pretty well in the start menu, so that it looks decent, but you're still stuck with Metro, and their idiotic "vision" of how things should be. And it won't be getting any better in the future either.. In spite of it all, I do like 10, but when you get right down to it, there isn't too much to recommend it. Given all that, don't ask me why I like it, I don't know.. but I do.

The upgrade is not free for the Enterprise Users. After 1 year it is not free for the non-Enterprise User. The free upgrade is no more than a marketing promotion (and a good one at that!).

MS maintains that W10 is intended to be an evolving platform - new feature support will be added as new technology (hardware, software and services) become available in the market place at large. The OS will not be the inhibitor, which will be a departure from the past. They also maintain that they have made security their number one priority for their Enterprise Users - a carrot to lure the XP hold outs and the W7 enterprise base.

The most relevant change is that MS has changed their vision - they want to be a services company. W7 is the current flagship and MS did not develop W7 or W8 with services in mind - W10 is the entry OS for that. So if you trying to nail down the difference - it is here. Not GUI enhancements or a radical rewrite of the OS. The company is changing their business model not their OS. W10 is more like W7.1 (or W8 with some modifications) . The enterprise is their main target and businesses do not like radical change. MS is trying to prove to them that they can start with low entry level hardware, which translates into no initial capital outlay for new hardware for W10. Enterprise users also get to control any W10 changes that they chose not to embrace.

As a non-Enterprise user, you are probably better off staying with W7 for a few years. Going back to W7 after trying out W10 . It is sanctioned by MS. Try out W10 and if you do not like it - go back to W7. It is worth the aggravation.

I wish I hadn't bothered with 10 at all.Since Ive restored back to 7 ,all i find myself doing is checking what so called important updates ,i shouldn't allow ,as they are either still for pushing windows 10 or some damn tracking stuff.Ive just noticed on the privacy section, that the list of not recommended updates is getting longer and longer.Anyone know how to update garmin satnav on linux? :)

As much as I miss XP, and I do, I wouldn't swap it for 7. ;)

I think I miss the overall look more than anything. It had a gaudy colour scheme which just seemed to work for me. I have odd aesthetic tastes though lol.

I haven't tackled the update situation yet.. I'm current as of now, but I should probably nuke about a dozen of these installed updates on 7. Such a pain though.... they keep coming back I hear..

I also want an OS to be all of those things and I think that Windows 7 was successful in those areas. When I say that Windows 10 doesn't need to be special I mean it doesn't need to astound me in some way. Microsoft already has a mature OS in 7, thus 10 can only reflect the incremental progress that has been made in hardware and software development. 10 is a step forward and most of the good stuff is under the hood which is fine by me. It's only the marketing world's need to justify its existence that makes it necessary to present each new thing as earth-shattering LOL.

Agreed! We're only at the beginning of this and it will be a while before we can see how it changes the Windows ecosystem. I already like the integration I'm seeing across my computers as a result of using a Microsoft Account in Windows 10. This will extend to Windows phones, tablets, etc.

After upgrading both of my machines I did restore Win7 to one but the other will almost certainly stay Win10.
... Horses for courses and all that.

@Victek You're right, Windows 10 is not special, but it works very well, and that's all that should matter in my opinion.

I'm still using Xp to post on Wilders. My test system for the Windows 10 upgrade has been stuck in some sort of loop and the upgrade hasn't happened yet, the disk just keeps filling up with the download. I don't even want to go to the trouble of restoring Windows 7, I just imaged the Windows 7 partition onto another disk and will put the original disk back in when the Windows 10 experiment is over.

I have a hard time getting worked up over the GUI aspect of an OS. I've tried all of them at one time or another. Windows from 3.1 to present, X Window for UNIX, Amiga, Mac Classic, Mac OSX, Gnome, KDE, Ubuntu's OSX style GUI and I've liked some more than others, but that is a fairly superficial aspect of an OS and in many cases is easily altered. Of more concern are stability, reliability, security and privacy. Nothing like losing work to crashes or data to leaks or hackers to show an OSes true faults. Due to the privacy issue, I will only try Windows 10 in a completely isolated system with no connection to the ones I'm doing real work or play on.

Yep, it does work well. I tried 7 again, and ran into a lot of issues, some of which have been going on in 7 for some time for me. I returned to 10 for good now, it really DOES run well on my system, seems fairly clean, and I like it a lot. Seems like the best choice for now and for the future.. I'm afraid 7 is just too old at this point..

Ok, now I understood what you meant. Agree that 7 is a good OS - except for GUI that it's more or less the usual not configurable Windows GUI - in fact I didn't need 8 and I only tried 10. The only thing about 7 is this: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/impossible-to-update-seven.374707/ . I found in the Web a lot of people with this problem and I tried all the suggested solutions, but they don't work permanently. This only to say that seems that Microsoft is not able to do an OS not bugged.

They can keep any version past win7 IMO. I will just stay clear of social media and basically not put myself out there (and that includes phones etc). When I am forced to upgrade I will try to stay with win7. If thats not viable, I might just go to linux of some kind as I am slowly weening myself from my pc. After years of fighting with MS systems, I accept that they are the defacto standard by which others need to measure up to, regarding features and ease of use. Apple and Linux just don't compare although I wish they would.

So, we (I) am stuck with microsofts thoroughly ridiculous operating systems until there is a serious competitor :)

Nah, not really. My W7 ran better than any XP version I had installed.

On this laptop (4 gig ram core 2 duo 2.1ghz) Ive installed virgin win 7,virgin win 10 (though for some reason it wouldnt activate) so had to go the upgrade route ,virgin xp and linux mint ,and xp was by far the quickest.I guess a lot depends on hardware etc.All of them ran well though. After i install any OS I usually disable
transparent glass ,and other non essential visual effects, which usually make quite a difference in speed of operation
