Windows 7/64 ,Sandboxie, ShadowDefender,Comodo AV on demand and Firewall.
    IE11,Comodo Dragon,PaleMoon, SRIron.

After a terrible mess it did,I uninstalled Firefox after so many years of use and decided to install Pale Moon in its stead. All fine with it,much faster than FF as advertised,it installed as default no problem, unfortunately also Pale Moon has the same drawbacks with certain pages like FF, but I kept it because it is fast.
Looking for a browser which was fast and more secure than Chrome, I rediscovered SRIron.
I am quite happy with it, it renders well all the pages that were problematic with firefox and PaleMoon, it is faster than FF and IE,obviously, and I guess it is at least as fast as PaleMoon or Comodo Dragon.
Reason for my writing is: there is no way I can set it as default,in place of PaleMoon.
It is not listed in the Default Progs list, so I cannot act from there. This is problem n*1,i guess.

I also uninstalled Sandboxie, tried to establish SRIron as default, and then reinstalled Sandboxie:no joy, after reboot, everything is like usual.
Anybody can suggest a way out or a registry tweak to make SRIron as default? As,frankly,I cannot understand way all sorts of browsers get listed and install as default, apart from SRIron......

    Try this

I downloaded and installed the latest version of Iron and found that I
wasn't able to make it the default browser. I then looked in the folder
and the "make default" application was there. I clicked on the
application and now have default browser working.

    Or See:

    Thank you for the link,rrh1.
The existing tool does not work, but I downloaded a new one and I'm in the process of reading the
entire thread before attempting new moves.
Now i'm pressed for time, but I'll let you know in a few hours.

After reading the entire thread I decided to try a simple method and it finally worked:

    (browser unopened)
Admin account >start button > all programs > SRWareDefault right click > open as admin > GO
    then
Amin account > start button > all programs > SRware (exe) > right click > open as admin > in the opened browser
click on make default > go to Settings and click on button Make SRware Iron default browser >close page ,browser and go
to Control Panel>Default Programs and you will find Chromium there > set it as default ,close and reboot.

After reboot in admin account check if it is set as default also in Control Panel>Default Programs.

If it is so, proceed to do the same moves for any limited account.
Dont forget to start everything without any open browser and to reboot at the end of the proceedings.

Having checked Chromium is listed as default and that Iron finally works as default in my ltd account without glitches
I thank again rrh1 abd finally can relax with a very fast browser.

I personally would not have a lot of faith in srware iron as i consider it a scareware browser and offers little that cant be achieved by simply unticking a few boxes in chrome.

I liked SRWare Iron a lot but it was always a tad buggy. It was fast though. I tend to use Chromium on Ubuntu though and Maxthon on Windows nowadays. IIRC Iron regularly came top in browser speed comparisons.

The Red Moon, yours are only impressions or do you have anything of weight for saying that?
    Wikipedia definition for scareware is:

Scareware is a form of malicious software that uses social engineering to cause shock, anxiety, or the perception of a threat in order to manipulate users into buying unwanted software. Scareware is part of a class of malicious software that includes rogue security software, ransomware and other scam software with malicious payloads, which have limited or no benefit to users, and are pushed by unethical marketing practices.
    and

Internet Security bloggers/writers use the term "scareware" to describe software products that produce frivolous and alarming warnings or threat notices, most typically for fictitious or useless commercial firewall and registry cleaner software. This class of program tries to increase its perceived value by bombarding the user with constant warning messages that do not increase its effectiveness in any way. Software is packaged with a look and feel that mimics legitimate security software in order to deceive consumers.[5

I'm using SRwareIron since only a few days and I cannot put my hand on fire for it,but I dont think you're right with your suspicions.
Or,at least, I did not find anything alarming with the browser.
I'd be more concerned privacy-wise with Chrome or Firefox these days.
Anyway, as Davesky17 inferred, SRwareIron is so fast it deserves a trial period.

These are old arguments about Iron, often much repeated by Chrome fanboys, but I have never seen any convincing evidence for it being scareware or scamware or anything malicious for that matter. I used it for years but I found it started to get a little buggy. I've just had a look at the PortableApps version and it seems fine. I liked its internal adblocker and its speed. The default search engine is Start Page. I believe one or two Linux distros use it as their default browser.

They may be "old" arguments but they are still valid.
I would sooner use chrome than use a browser from some unknown entity in the heart of germany. There is nothing about iron which cannot be achieved by simply altering a few settings in chrome.

Because it has an integrated adblocker is hardly a huge incentive to use it as the installation of an extension would accomplish the same.It creates fictitious problems with chrome and then iron claims to solve them.I cannot believe that 1 or 2 distros would use iron as a default browser seeing as its totally closed source.:ninja:

@The Red Moon I read almost all the entire blog you mention and i find the accusation that SRwareIron is crap because the author-developer
makes money IN HIS SITE (NOT FROM THE BROWSER) by using ad.sense,so that the more clicks the more money for him, is simply ridicolous
in my opinion, especially considering what the giants do.
I am inclined to think the blog author is certainly a fan boy of some one.
Dont stop at the author declarations, read the replies, too.

I did read some of the replies but those may well be iron fanboyism hysteria.
I would sooner use a browser from a top company rather than some one-man band developer.
It would be so refreshing to see someone create a new browser from scratch rather than these clones. My opinion of iron browser is set in iron and will not change.

I understand the paranoia but I really don't accept the tinfoil hat theories about Iron. I think the developer took advantage of some of the paranoia about Chrome that was around early on and that upset some people. The German government and Google have had clashes about privacy problems. The intergrated adblocker did break pages occasionally. I'm not totally sure of the distros, Puppy might be one of them but I can't say for certain. Although, it does seem odd that a distro would use a closed source browser as its default. There's nothing sinister about Iron. I don't know whether they've ironed the bugs out properly. It was warm brown stuff off a shovel fast though lol.

Dearest daveski, paranoia and web usage are a marriage made in internet heaven lol.
As i say i would rather use chrome seeing as its from a big company like google and i can be assured it is being updated and produced in a stable form.
Research on iron has permitted me to adorn my tinfoil hat with dignity and pride lol.

Yeah, Chrome is more stable, that's for sure. Anyway, Iron's adbocker was a huge pain in the arse to update as you had to switch off the UAC to replace Fanboy's list lol!

I use Chromium x64 on Ubuntu, which is more or less the same thing as Iron I guess. I've never been able to satisfactorily explain why Iron seemed faster than anything I've used (including Maxthon) though. I guess it's all in my imagination .... unless SRWare are using some form of evil subliminal mind control to convince me otherwise. *reaches for tinfoil hat* :argh:

A tad off topic, but as I checked out the PortableApps SRWare Iron version I decided to check out a few others as well (Chrome, Firefox, *SeaMonkey, Opera and QupZilla). Iron performed well I thought, all but one of the others in the main were sluggish and tended to freeze a bit (I'm talking about you Opera). I used two pendrives, a 32GB PNY and a 4GB HP. The overall joint winners were Iron and QupZilla. Both had very little freezing or sticking. Sometimes you have to wait for adblock lists to load in QupZilla if you open the AdBlock UI by clicking on its icon in the browser GUI.

*SeaMonkey was quite good most of the time.

~ Removed VirusTotal Results as per Policy ~

There is a clear warning that the homepage may contain fake adware downloads and other ads.
    Ethics of this practice being......?
This is another reason i will not touch it.

Yeah, I knew you'd see that lol. It does say 'may' but you can just remove the speed dials you don't want and change the homepage. There's a difference between malware and irritating adware. I don't think it is malicious but possibly a way to monetise with possible PUP's.

There again, I'm probably being an optimist. ;)

I'm also pretty sure at least one distro uses QupZilla as its default browser. QupZilla is also in the Ubuntu repo.
