Don't you see a "Check for updates" under "Help"? Also look at Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Online Update
No, you can't upgrade a "fresh" version via the internal updater. You have to download manually the new version and then you can install the new a) on top of the working one b) or via this way

I would like to use LibreOffice, but I can not. I was an OO user for many years and switched to LibreOffice. I had 3.5.1 installed for some time and decided to go back to OO. I used the provided uninstaller, but it did not completely uninstall it. I went through the process of deleting registry entries, App data etc. but it is still there. Even REVO could not delete it, so I gave up. Just recently I decided to try V5, but I kept getting a popup saying that I had an old version installed (yes, it was 3.5.1) . I thought if I re-installed 3.5.1 that would fix it, but it was looking for installation files that I did not have - it did not specifically indicate the version for which the files were required. I used the archive and installed 3.3.2 and 3.4 - neither was accepted. After having downloaded over 1GB , I gave up. If installation files are required, it would be helpful if the popup requested the release of the files required. I would prefer LibreOffice, but the site does not provide adequate help to see me through the current situation. Today I installed OO 4.1.2.
You could try LibreOffice 4.4.5.2 in case LO doesn't like installing v5 over v3. I had installed v5.0 and found that in both ods and odt there was a serious problem with rendering which is supposed to be fixed in v5.1 So I went back to v 4.4.5.2 and I'm waiting for 5.1 in Feb. 2016.
I use it on Seven and it works. Only a bit of time to download because I keep it in manual and I don't load it at the boot.
With 4.4.5.2, I get a popup once again saying that an older version is installed. I am pretty sure I have to re-install 3.5.1 but I need to know what previous release to 3.5.1 has the installation files that 3.5.1 needs . There is an identifier on each of the installation files that I think might be the key, e.g. V3.3 (4d80c175), 3.4 (4dd40d14). When 3.5.1 is installed, the installation files folder will show this identifier - that is what I need to know.
Installation ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LibreOffice requires a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for full functionality. JRE is not part of the LibreOffice installation package, it should be installed separately. Maybe these are the 'missing files'.... The JRE that I have is 8u65. Install Java before LO.
Isn't JRE included in a 'full install' package ? The popup is asking for 3.5.1 Installation Files to finalize the installation (it gets to about 90% complete then the popup appears). If you know that JRE is not included, I will go ahead and install it - but I do not want to if it comes with the MSI.

Emmjay, you could try Libre's portable version. Perhaps, the installation goes smooth. I am using an older version, a couple of versions back. It works nice, easy to delete it or upgrade (over the top). Java doesn't come with it, I don't have Java installed and have never needed it for anything using Libre.
