yup i used to pretty much just blindly install updates without thinking much about it. now i have to google and research every update because they have lost my trust. and to think i used to like ms before they ruined xbox and windows.

kb3078667 System malfunction because memory leak occurs in dwm.exe. sounds like a legit update i should install. problem is i have pretty much lost all faith in ms so im not sure i want to install it yet.

I installed the IE cumulative patch on my two 7x64 machines, then ran the browser for a while (something I very seldom do) to test just a little bit. Seems fine. Other updates hidden.

Yeah, it would make a lot of sense to use alternatives.

Installed both important and recommended updates with no problems. Autoruns shows no changes in autorun section. I guess that comparing logs will be another weekly activity.

I've already gone to Linux, and it has everything I need. Running Debian now, and loving it... Who needs MS?

I'm going to have to do some research on Linux because I don't know a damn thing about it. I've always used M$ with the updates set at automatic. Looks like that has come to a end with M$.

I upgraded to 10 after using the insider previews, but when I found out about all the privacy issues and saw the bugs and the forced updates, I bailed on it. Then I was going to go back to 7, but didn't want to hassle all the unknown crazy updates in that too. Who knows what's going on nowadays, right?

I've been using linux off and on for over 10 years, so I'm used to it. However, if you start with one of the top few distros, like Mint or Debian or even Ubuntu, it's relatively easy to deal with. Any questions or issues you have can usually be solved by checking their forums, since most of the time someone else has already had your problem or asked your question..

It has just reached a point with MS that I don't want to use Windows at all anymore... Too much hassle. Anyway, good luck with your research... :)

I'd recommend that you discuss running Linux on your present hardware with other Linux users as there can be compatibility problems with some hardware combinations. Ubuntu is probably the most successful Linux distro and many of the other (Mint, Lubuntu, LXLE, Zorin, Zeven, Peach, Kubuntu etc) distros are essentially derivatives and are based on it. Or, like me, you can buy a computer with Linux preinstalled.

It's worth noting that Ubuntu was actually one of the first to do some of the privacy invading stuff that you now see in Win 10. So you may want to think twice about Ubuntu. From what I've read though, you can turn this privacy invasive behavior off in various settings, and there is no data leaked.

True, many others are based on Ubuntu, however, Ubuntu is based on Debian. So if you want the source, you might want to consider Debian also, it's very well done, with a choice of many great UI's like Cinnamon, instead of the Unity UI which turned many people away from Ubuntu when they introduced it.

All that said, I don't mean to derail this thread, just wanted to clarify what was said above...

There's too much nonsense talked about Ubuntu. Shuttleworth did a deal with Amazon, which can very easily be opted out of by the end user, it is freeware and development costs are expensive. That's all. Unity works perfectly well. Shuttleworth never hid anything and Ubuntu works fine. This can all be discussed quite openly on the Ubuntu forums by anyone.

I installed the IE Patch but not the other 4 updates. Will hide or install them some other day.

I hid the four optional new updates, I still haven't installed the most recent seven that I have. I'll wait another week and then install the seven patches.

I installed KB3087985 on W7/32 today. It about took over 2 minutes to complete the install and there was a Cleanup function that followed that took another 5 minutes. I expect it cleaned up WINSxS. as it has become bloated since the advent of GWX.

"WinSxS is short for Windows Side-by-Side and refers to using files with the same name but with different version numbers at the same time in the operating system.

As things evolved, the WinSxS folder also became the perfect place to store files added to the operating system by Windows Update. Microsoft releases a multitude of updates every month to keep up with bugs, new applications, and security problems (just to name a few of the reasons for the regular updates). In order to make sure the updates don't cause compatibility problems, all kinds of duplicate files get stored in the WinSxS folder so that everything can continue to function correctly. Furthermore, many Windows updates are designed such that if they do cause unanticipated compatibility problems, they can be uninstalled, and the files can be reverted back to a previous state.".

Just a note on my current experience upgrading a DELL XPS 8300 from Win 7 to 10. The update came through WU last night and I let it go ahead and went to bed. This morning I checked the system and it appeared to have gotten stuck with a restart where it appeared to have crashed. I performed a hard power reset and the Win 10 upgrade took hold and proceeded to completion with the system working well; even better than I had expected.

It also appears that though DELL has posted information about what they will be updating, I am getting manufacturer specific update notices for my hardware with driver updates that I am now installing. All-in-all a bit nerve wracking at first, but it looks like the process does work eventually...

In the end, I installed the middle 2, and hid these two, based on the quotes (bold mine):

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3075249 (1.2 MB)
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080149 (16.7 MB)
Since they were Optional, and I don't plan to upgrade, C'est La Vie!

However, for those that had the sfc /scannow 'corruption' error, see this.

Quote: 'KB 3080149 finally fixes a problem I first reported way back in the May 28 Patch Watch column. KB 3022345 was a poorly documented update that enabled the Diagnostic Tracking Service in Win8.1 and Win7. Unfortunately, it also caused the Windows System File Checker to pop up warnings about corrupted system files. But there were no corrupted files — the warnings were bogus.

I’m still not convinced we need this patch — especially if you’re not planning to upgrade to Win10 anytime soon. But if you ran into the corrupted-files issue, KB 3080149 is the fix.'

I had this issue and I can verify that KB 3080149 has fixed it.
