How does this still happen. I know we have concerns over MS and Bitlocker (privacy related). But it is only a few clicks and could definitely protect against simple threats like this.
Because they don't get sufficiently caned for lapses, either as businesses or directors. Negligence doesn't even start to cover how awful it is. Routinely awful. And because there are no regulations that dictate (as they should do given what's happened), that all business records are encrypted, as are all B2B communications, and with options for consumers to interact securely. But the wind is blowing in the opposite direction - immunity for corporations, and an attack on encryption.
This is beyond belief, and yet I do believe it because we see it about every other year in the news. Criminal IMO.
Yeah, the penalties for exposing information currently do not outweigh the costs of being secure. Seems to be the cost to the company is at most identity theft protection for a year for the 1% of people who bother to sign up for it.
A UN-encrypted laptop is bad enough but a UN-encrypted laptop and UN-secured laptop for transit is... well not good...not good at all.
