Seriously considering purchasing a Laptop computer to replace my desktop computer. Anyone own a Lenovo Laptop and if so would you recommend me purchasing one. The Shop I would purchase the Laptop from sells business machines and while it would be more expensive than a retail store they say the business machine would be more dependable. The tell me they can get a Dell or HP but they seem to be pushing the Lenovo. I am familiar with the Dell and HP name but haven't heard much regarding Lenovo. I really would appreciate hearing from the Lenovo Laptop owners. Regardless of the brand, I am sticking with the Windows 7 Operating System. As always I would appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance.

I have a low-end ThinkPad. It's well made, and has worked well so far for about four years.

My problem with Lenovo is not their products. They make fine products, but the Chinese company (and their Chinese government overseers) cannot be trusted. They have a long history (since buying out IBM's PC business in 2005) of including malware on their computers and spying on their customers as recently as just this last February. And there's a good reason Lenovo products have been banned from sensitive UK, Australia, NZ, Canada and US government agencies.

Since the Chinese government has no qualms with conducting cyber-warfare on democratic societies, or their private citizens, I would recommend and urge avoiding their products.

Since this is a business retailer, maybe they could scrub the system and do a fresh install of Windows.

As for sticking with W7, I think that is a mistake. W7 is already 6 years old. W8.1 is faster and more secure than W7 and W10 is faster and more secure than W10. While extended support for W7 will last until Jan 2020, mainstream support has already ended. Using a legacy operating systems on modern hardware typically does not allow the modern hardware to operate at potentials.

Oh please, so we cannot trust a chinese company and we can trust an american company, or a UK, Australian ,Canadian, Germany company, etc.?
The Five Eyes (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) surveillance programs (Prism, Xkeyscore, Tempora, Muscular, StateRoom) don't do the same thing?

John, Lenovo business machines are usually well build and I prefer them from Dell or HP, mostly because they continue to support them (release drivers for new OSes) for more than 3 years.

Same here. From brands I had: ASUS - bad cooling (keep your hands cool, not really), HP - loud, more business like, Acer - comparable to Lenovo.

I'm not in the least Sinophobic (my grandmother was Cantonese) and the Lenovo G500 laptop preinstalled with Ubuntu I purchased a few months ago is still going strong and malware free. I'd recommend Lenovo.

USA still the best. But barely.
I've had hundreds of the T series & a few of the X series ThinkPads. I test them to make sure the OS's are aok & pass them on. Had only 1-2% failure rate on the T series. What makes the 1-2% failure rate phenomenal is that when I get them they are 6-8 years old.

My personal laptop is a Lenovo G780, their essentials line. Three years old, I maxed out the RAM at 16GB & threw in an SSD. Three or 4x I've looked at upgrading & other than a "faster" CPU which I don't need they always come up short. To get all the features my G780 has it'd cost ~$1500 USD.

I'd say go for it, but nuke the HDD/SSD & do a fresh install. And I'd cost out a consumer version if you don't need a tank like ThinkPad.

As far as I know, Lenovo only put malware/spyware on their consumer gear, and specifically not on ThinkPads. Also, their malware/spyware was Israeli, which makes no sense if it's part of some Chinese government exploit. I'd expect Israeli firms to be part of Five Eyes exploits. Also, I doubt that the mix of Chinese and non-Chinese components in Lenovo laptops are much different from the mix in other laptop brands.

its fun to call others "sinophobic" though. was you a Nixophobe if you werent a big fan of dick nixon? Mao-ophobe? Stalinophone? cause i likes Chinese folks just fine, not a big fan of the communist govt though.

Since most notebooks come from somewhere other than America, and often China, that really makes no sense. What does make sense for my comments is Lenovo has been caught - over and over again putting spyware in their products! So I am singling out Lenovo (and the Chinese government overseers) with just cause! Not all Chinese.

This last one (that we know of was Superfish and Lenovo first denied it until their involvement was proven and they had no option but admit then, the release an update to remove it.

Right, which why I specifically said to beware of Lenovo the company and their government overseers - who have been caught over and over again spying, running DDoS attacks, etc.

Why not? The Chinese have for decades stolen technologies from aviation, electronics, software - you name it.

So chill pandlouk, I have nothing against the people of China. I am using two Samsung monitors right now and will soon be watching my Samsung TV.

Isn't Samsung Korean? As I'm about to turn on my Samsung.

I've bought several thinkpad lenovo machines in the past year and am very happy with them. Did take some off but haven't seen any issue. Also I've stuck with Win 7 as it works without all the drama of 10

I didn't actually call anyone a Sinophobe. Don't know much about Stalin or Nixon, but there again I'm neither American or Georgian. I do worry about Lenovophobes though. ;)

The build quality and reliability of ThinkPad's (with perhaps the exception of some of the low end series like the Edge ones) is outstanding. I currently own three ThinkPads, and when it comes to a choice of laptop, ThinkPads are my preferred choice.

I do have doubts about the quality of the non ThinkPad models, based on online opinion, and that I witnessed one with a broken hinge a few weeks ago.

I have a T series Thinkpad and it has been running Ubuntu for several years. I purchased a Lenovo X series in 2009 and it is still working just fine. I upgraded the HDD though. Lenovo sends driver and BIOS updates via a product called system update to all Lenovo owners . I have never used the Lenovo help line so I do not know what they are like. I also bought a Lenovo desktop in 2006 and it is still in use with W7/64 on board. I have installed memory upgrades, new HDDs, you name it and I have had no significant problems. Based on that I would recommend Lenovo. The Superfish fiasco was a bad business decision which they have regretted big time. I do not think it was govt. sponsored.

sure you did. you effectively accused those who would disagree with you of being sinophobes.

if you dont know much abt Stalin its because you choose not to. Nixon was rather irrelevant to history outside the U.S.

    haha so funny.

more of the same. you seem to have the problem, not us.

No, this is your extrapolation based on your own inference.

I know who Stalin was. I just don’t see what relevance he has to Lenovo computers.

Oh, I can assure you I’m not the one with the problem here. By using the collective reflexive pronoun ‘us’ do you mean ‘you’ or are you a collective?

Right.. let's get back on track here in order to keep this thread open.

    Subject is
    Lenovo and not World Politics.

Pm's would be a more suitable platform for discussing subjects such as that.

How do you know? You don't even know what my nationality is. What exactly has my mendacity been? I think you make too many corollaries based on little or no evidence. But, don't let reality stand in your way. I'll leave it at that.
