Ok I was able to get Edge working. I had to create a new user. Once I did that it works fine and now when I log in to my original account from 8.1, I can access Edge too. Weird and I don't understand why.

On Windows 7 MSE updates once every 24 hours. Since MSE is now Windows Defender in Win 10 did MS change the update time or is it still once every 24 hours? I'm hoping they changed it to update more often for the people that can't afford to buy security software.

Not sure, but it's incorporated in Windows updates. According to this, Windows 8.1 was still once a day, but can be made more frequent via scheduled tasks:

I'll probably rely on AV-Comparatives and AVTEST to do proper benchmarks with Defender on Windows 10 before I do something crazy like abandon my current AV! :)

I'm doing another upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. On this computer, shortly after I reserved the upgrade, I was given the option to go ahead and download and install Windows 10 via Windows update.

Edit: The upgrade finished with no problems. The laptop has switchable graphics, but I did not need to disable swtichable graphics in the BIOS.

The bluetooth driver is showing and error in device manager, and I am not able to adjust the screen bightness. I am downloading driver uodates from Lenovo now (they have relased Windows 10 drivers for this laptop). Becuause this is not a ThinkPad there is no System Update software to autoamtically update drivers. Also, Lenovo Drivers Management found no driver updates, but, it probably does not officialy support Windows 10 yet.

You can change the time to scan and update with WIN 10 Defender . Go to 'Control Panel - Security\Maintenance', click on 'Maintenance' ;) Look for 'Automatic Maintenance'. Set it at a time you start on the computer, you will be updated before you start keying :thumb:

I read in one article that they even track/log every url you go to, as well as tons of other things. It's pretty crazy....

I'm thinking there may be a lot of initial hysteria which will mostly be sound and fury signifying nothing. I'm already in Google's honey trap. I gave up privacy a long time ago. If you are on the web at all, somebody knows and knows what you're doing no matter how clever you think you are.

For those who aren't doing anything wrong, I don't think the privacy concerns matter that much. But it's the principle that bothers me. Since when is a computer OS supposed to track and log everything you do and pull personal data off your computer (emails, docs, who knows what) to send to someone's servers without any explanation or control over it? Since when is an OS supposed to use your bandwidth to feed files to other computers? Too many unknowns here still, and too many concerns that really shouldn't be a concern of any OS. Linux doesn't do any of this sh*t. Bottom line: I think they've taken things too far... and I think the general public may slowly realize this as time passes.

How about business, or even personal individual files like financial spreadsheets or documents of a private nature? What happens to those? Who knows, right? Do you think anyone is going to feel comfortable using Win 10 and knowing that their personal banking or financial data may be logged/tracked/stolen and possibly given to 3rd parties?

Nah... all this spells trouble for MS and it's users..

ESET NOD32 version 8 appears to be working in Windows 10. I was able to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 without turning it off. I was also able to use the Reset PC feature afterwards. My only quibble is NOD32 likes to warn me that I'm in full screen. This was easily ignored in Windows 7 but Windows 10 will show the alert over the screen.

The thing about data mining is eventually it becomes clear what is being collected. If it could be shown that personal data, such as spreadsheet files or banking information was being collected it would be the end of Windows 10 and could put Microsoft in the courts as well. I've yet to see anyone demonstrating that things like that are happening. What I think IS happening is Microsoft is beginning to do what others, such as Google and Amazon, have already been doing for some time. If I view a video on Youtube using my phone when I pull up Youtube on my PC I see suggestions that are clearly the result of my previous activity. The same thing happens on Amazon.com and eBay, etc. Obviously browsing and viewing habits are being documented and crunched and fed back in ways that the companies believe will increase their online hits and sales, whatever. I just ignore it.

I agree with you though about the OS changing. We are used to there being a firm line between browser content and the rest of the data on our computers. Starting with Windows 8 that line began to blur and the trend is continuing in 10.

What you say makes good sense, and yes, my examples are a bit extreme, but... The maddening thing about it all is that I like Windows 10. I just don't know if I can trust it now, or to what extent I can trust it, and so on. And the other problem seems to be that their verbiage in their licensing agreements etc are deliberately pretty vague, giving them a lot of room to flex, and perhaps do things that we might not expect to see them doing.

But good points. I don't mean to over-exagerate things, but I do think things are changing a LOT. I don't know if that's good or not.

Well, they say they capture ANY text you type, even within e-mails etc, meaning it will capture spreadsheet data as well. But no one really knows the extent at which they do it...

    EDIT:
Just checked the connections and Windows 10 seems to connect to:
    x.vortex-win.data.microsoft.com

    Anyone knows what this is?

I put them in the "Trust but verify" category as their results and my experience differ. They also don't test robustness of software--"real-world" tests don't actually simulate the real world unless you're John Q. who bought his eMachine at BestBuy and only does e-mail, Internet, and Office-type stuff.

I agree. My concern is spam, spim, unsolicited phone calls and snail mail. Otherwise, what is the problem?

Targeted advertising (versus non-targeted)--so what? I don't see advertising anyway as it's all blocked and I'm assuming anyone on a security forum also has advertising blocked.

It isn't just "content" that people need to be able to protect, but also metadata. There is good reason to believe that both will be more difficult to protect in the future. WRT the Windows ecosystem, we're still in the capture phase. Squeeze has already started, but we may not see the worst of it until around or after peak capture. Which would probably be near or after Windows 7 end of life, when there is nowhere else to run. Much of the squeeze we've seen thus far is non-monetary in nature. Eventually, there should be a more serious monetary squeeze.

The domain vortex-win.data.microsoft.com was mentioned in a couple of updates related to customer experience and diagnostic telemetry. Perhaps the associated could be verified by tracking back to the process involved.

This is what really bothers me.. it's all pretty open-ended, and undefined.

Have 8.1 on my Toshiba and 7 on my Dell. Enjoy them both and really have no desire to upgrade to W-10. Heard that Microsoft support for 7 expires Jan. 2020 and Jan. 2023 for 8.1. With all the questions, glitches, and concerns over 10...why bother? 8.1 and 7 are still great O.S.'s, so might as well let windows get out all the bugs and publicly address their 10 security issues. So for now and probably quite awhile, am very content not to upgrade.:thumb:
