Hi. I´ve been using Online Armor Free for a few years now and I loved it. The other day I updated to Windows 10 and I hated it, so I reformatted my computer and went back to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. When I went to download a new copy of OA I found out that they (Emsisoft) had merged it with their malware remover. I liked their malware remover so I installed it. However there were now basically no control options for the firewall and worst of all it allowed almost all programs witthout any prompts. The only one it did prompt me to either allow or block was uTorrent, which I allowed; however after a few minutes it prompted me again, and again and again, so I unistalled it and I am now searching for a good replacement. I am looking for a basic firewall that allows me to control which programs can (or cannot) connecto to the internet. I don´t care about HIPS (as a matter of fact I had it disabled on OA). Thanks a lot in advance.
I was in the same boat as I needed to find a new firewall after I updated to Windows 10 and Online Armor no longer worked properly. You might want to read my reply here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/posts/2512887/
I do not use EIS but there is an Outbound option in Firewall settings that you have to change to 'Ask'.
If you just want have a easy way to prohibit software connecting to the Internet have a look at the freeware Firewall App Blocker (Fab) v1.4
It is quite easy to just block an application in Windows firewall itself. Not of course as pretty or easy GUI. For security/privacy point it is desirable to block everything/unknown not needed outgoing. For that I recommend some program that controls Windows firewall and make it a 2-way firewall.
I installed Private Firewall (https://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html ) the other day, not loving it though. Do any of you use it? Is it any good? How about the firewall included in Eset Smart Security?
I use it on 2 of my computers. Thumb rule is you need at least basic understanding of networking to implement privacy properly. Private Firewall is effective in blocking IP addresses, ranges and different protocols. The functions are misunderstood to most. I only recommend it for advanced to intermediate user. Talking about firewall, browser countermeasures are simply not enough. I'm shocked at how naive some poster at another thread.
+1 PrivateFirewall. A very good HIPS firewall -- very light and very effective, but not a lot of recent development. However, this is not a problem for me..
Not to hi-jack your thread, but I agree. Though I'm still using Windows 10 since Microsoft finally worked out some of the issues with font scaling while using Hi-dpi resolutions. I may just go back to Windows 7 Pro. What I'm not fond about is Microsoft's blatant disregard towards an individuals Privacy, and the inability to be a real administrator of the operating system, especially when a setting is displayed in bold lettering "Some settings are managed by your organization" when not part of an organization and the administrator of the system... it's not even possible to disable settings that violate privacy rights. Users ought to have the sole right to choose whether to send or not send Microsoft "Feedback & diagnostic" reports. Disabling the option and demanding "basic" computer reports is incredibly invasive.
@ TomAZ Is it still any good with the HIPS features off? I find HIPS features (in general, not just in this case) very obtrussive, you get almost constant prompts for file activity that in most cases is perfectly safe and normal.
I just found out that Private Firewall is no longer being developed, that the latest version (the one I have installed) dates back to 2013, which is not good. Still looking for a good two way firewall, not interested in HIPS (so they need to be able to be disabled if they are present at all).
I use Windows Firewall Notifier which is a controller for the built-in Windows firewall. It's also working on Windows 10 for me. I'm using the 1.9 version. Haven't tried the 2.x alpha, someone else here reported problems. http://wfn.codeplex.com/
COMODO is my default choice for Windows. It's Internet Security product is amazing, if configured well can and will block 100% of malware.
I have not tried Windows Firewall Notifier yet, but I have wanted to. It looks really interesting. It's a shell for Windows Firewall. I learned about this firewall about 3 months ago, and I have not gotten around to testing it yet. https://wfn.codeplex.com/https://wfn.codeplex.com/ Edit: Sorry, I see that SnowWalker already mentioned this Firewall above.
You can go with 100% confidence with Comodo Firewall.HIPS can be disabled, and the Sandbox too (if you know how it works and how to handle it,of course you can leave it enabled ).And you will have a 100% pure 2 ways firewall.IMHO it's the best choice if you want to have a third party firewall.
Salut, There is no HIPS in 64 bits system with patchguard. Comodo .. read the EULA ... where is the privacy ? NSA compatible ? ... Comodo is just a gui for the Windows filtering platform.
Comodo is one annoying thing. I recommend TinyWall if wanting a total silence from a firewall. Which is a good thing actually. When somehing is not working you go figure out yourself. And only at these times.
Exactly how I run it... HIPS and Sandbox disabled. Currently using 8.2.0.4591. Perfectly content with it.
Well the panorama is the following. Private firewall: 2 years without updates, abandonware? Agnitum: 1 Year without updates, and the dev haven't release yet a version compatible with win10, almost abandonware or strong development slowdown? Online Armor: officially abandonware The only "strong/classic" standalone firewalls left are Comodo and Zonealarm, probably I'm missing others. Then you have a bunch of basic firewalls that uses windows firewall. WFC (which I use), Tiny Fw...
« The only "strong/classic" standalone firewalls left are Comodo and Zonealarm » No ! In 64 bits with patchguard, there is not « stand alone » firewalls, just guis for the Windows filtering platform since VISTA. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366510(v=vs.85).aspx Understand, remember, and no longer repeat..
