am I right in thinking you have to know where a lost file resided in the file system in order to be able to restore it, because during the restore you have to navigate the folders, find the file, and check it to indicate you need it to be restored. What if I lose a file and cannot remember exactly what location it had been in?
No, it will ask if you want to restore the file/folder to its original location or specify another location to restore it to.
I think I didn't explain my problem fully - Say I had a file "test1.doc" which I save to my hdd. Two months later I cannot recall where I saved it to. To restore it I must know where it was in the folder hierarchy because during the restore I have to expand the folder structure to find it, and check it for restore. If I've forgotten where on my hdd I saved it I cannot thus restore it.
Whoops! Yes, you have to find it on your HD first. If you select "partitions" to be shown you can mount your archive like any other HD and just search for it. Well, if you find that way, you can also just copy it back then.
Thanks for that, poking around I found the Volume Explorer which I had not looked at before. I see I can expand the drives node and search for the file I need to restore then right-click it and choose 'Export' and then select a destination folder. This is a quicker way than I have used up to now, I always ran a restore job which requires clicking thru a number of screens to create the restore job and finally selecting Apply to run it. However both methods expect me to know where the file I need to restore resides in the folder hierarchy. I was hoping for something like the Search box in Windows File Explorer where I can enter the filename and the system returns a Search Results window showing all the occurrences of the file (if more than one copy exists) and shows where the file resides. Of course if I've accidentally deleted it (thus needing a restore) this method will not find it. I was hoping for a similar search function in the restore function in Paragon... I do not understand your phrase "you can mount your archive like any other HD and just search for it." Could you expand on that a bit please? Many thanks, dave
oh dear! Almost immediately after I posted the above I found Volume Explorer and now understand what you meant! You are correct, I can mount the archive then search it in File Explorer - many thanks for putting me on the right road, you are a star
