    Re: SpywareBlaster 5.2 released!

    Upgrading Tips:

To upgrade SpywareBlaster from a previous version you can either:
    (a) Download and install the new version of SpywareBlaster "over-the-top".
    (b) Uninstall the old version of SpywareBlaster first. Please see the detailed upgrade instructions here: http://www.brightfort.com/sbupdate.html

    Either method should work.

Google Chrome should be detected and supported. What version are you running?

(If you're referring to Chromium, or another Chrome-based browser, support for those is forthcoming in a future release.)

Windows 8.1 on an HP Stream7 tablet:

When I opened/ran SpywareBlaster 5.2 for the first time, the Tutorial screen appeared, but was completely blank (white), except for a small rectangular black box where the NEXT button is supposed to be. The black box did nothing when I clicked on it. My only option was to X-out the Tutorial screen, which generated Run-time error '384': A form can't be moved or sized when content is minimized or maximized.
    Hitting OK then crashed/closed SpywareBlaster.

I reinstalled 5.0, to confirm the Tutorial screen worked correctly there. I was tempted to stay there, but noted that it reverted to a 2-year old database... and when I went to update the database, it advised me of the existence of the newer program version, and so would no longer allow a simple database update.

At that point, I figured it was worth trying 5.2 again. Surprisingly, this time I saw and got through the tutorial! But then I got another Run-time error '384' (same message as above). This time, clicking OK generated yet another Run-time error '91': Object Variable or With block variable not set. Hitting okay resulted in a "freeze" --- SpywareBlaster has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Repeated attempts resulted in the same sequence of error messages.

Not sure if there's anything else I can try... I think SpywareBlaster may have been successful in enabling all protection before it crashed... and if so, I can just leave it that way for the time being. Alternatively, I can just uninstall it, but that's not a satisfactory solution.

Hopefully, you'll be able to replicate what I've described --- is the Stream7's small screen the key factor --- and make the necessary adjustments in the program's coding. Let me know if there's any additional information you require.

    @ky331,

What resolution settings (and DPI settings) do you currently have set on that tablet?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

In confirmation of message from John Mult @21:00 today, Spyware Blaster 5.2 will not protect the Chrome Browser Version 43.0.2357.134 m (latest up to date version) running on Windows XP.

Does not protect Chrome when frst installed, will not protect it when 'Enable All Protection' is clicked, and will not protect it even if items are checked manually. Doubtless something simple. This is the very first time I've ever had problems with Spyware Blaster.

    Javacool,

Screen Resolution is 1280x800... which is the "Recommended" Setting... and in fact, the highest resolution available on that system. Interestingly, there is also a warning message indicating "Your resolution is lower than 1200x900. Some items might not fit on your screen".

And if I understand the question, the DPI "scaling factor" is 125% "Medium".

I'm still using XP SP3 and was using SpywareBlaster until a couple years ago. Just wondering if it's still a worthwhile addition to the several security programs I already have in my security 'arsenal?'

Thanks for the heads up. I did the upgrade. How do I get it to support Maxthon, and delete support for browsers I no longer use? Thanks in advance.:)

    Short answer: Yup!

Long answer: We still support Windows XP, and provide a valuable additional layer of protection. (This doesn't make up for the fact that Microsoft is no longer providing security patches, and newer OSes are substantially more secure by design. But if you're still on XP, you're better off with more complementary security layers than without.)

    Hello javacool,

If the information is available I wonder if you might be able to give those of us who have the problem with Chrome Browser on Windows XP apparently not being protected by Spyware Blaster v5.2 (mine plus two other posts above) an indication of whether this is likely to be looked at with a view to fixing please?

I'm prepared for the worst. XP is after all, as you note above, unsupported by Microsoft. But it would be nice to know whether I should give up on checking status of Spyware Blaster releases until I install Windows 10.

Meantime I've reverted to Spyware Blaster v5.0 which worked perfectly with Chrome on XP (and apparently still does, though of course it is no longer able to receive updates).

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,

    We're investigating now.

    What it's looking like is:
-The problem is limited to Windows XP Home Edition.
-Google Chrome protection on Windows XP Professional works fine. (As well as on every other version and edition of Windows.)
-The problem is due to missing libraries and functionality on Windows XP Home. (Microsoft decided not to include certain features on Windows XP Home.)

Changes to SpywareBlaster were necessitated by changes Google made to Chrome. If you're running the latest version of Google Chrome, you must be running SpywareBlaster 5.2 to be fully and properly protected. (And, of course, you ought to be running the latest version of your web browser for security.)

Conversely, if you have reverted to SpywareBlaster 5.0, but are using the latest version of Google Chrome, it won't work fully with Chrome.

So basically, since SpywareBlaster 5.2 won't "undo" anything SpywareBlaster 5.0 did, you're better off running SpywareBlaster 5.2 for now (despite this issue) because of its other protection (and updates for it).

We are still investigating details, as well as what workarounds might be available.

If you wouldn't mind sending an e-mail with a link to this thread and your username on these forums to:
    bugreports AT brightfort DOT com

I can keep you updated as more information is available.

    Thank you.

I can confirm the problem reported above by Windows XP Home users. I can also report one further issue. When clicking on the "SpywareBlaster Extra Tools Help" hyperlink within the SpywareBlaster 5.2 program's Tools section, it 404's instead of resolving to the help page.

    Cheers
