Hi, i'm trying to migrate some data partitions from an old computer to a newer one. Its stuff like portable apps or installer programs, Thunderbird profiles, etc and when i tried this with just copy + paste the folders it took forever so i thought maybe i could just image the partition and move to the newer computer. I would use Clonezilla but i thought i read where the partition number like SDA1, SDA2 etc has to match from the old drive to the new one? (maybe i'm wrong) So then i thought about GParted and the copy paste options there. I would like to just copy paste to an external HDD and then move that to the newer computer SSD with the paste option. or maybe there's a better way with some of the free imaging programs out there?
You are correct in that sector copying of partitions is much faster than copy/paste of files. And more reliable if you have long paths.
thanks for the reply. thats interesting. i did finally do most of my partitions with copy + paste to a flash drive but i ran into a few of those filenames that were too long. i'll have to try some other imaging solutions. i tried Redo Backup + Restore and i like the look of the interface but there weren't too many options and it seemed kind of slow.
i used TeraCopy free portable because it has verify option. seemed pretty slow though, prob no boost over Windows at all. also it missed about 600 files out of idk maybe 450,000 or so - mostly PNG files from open office or libre office. not sure why.
