Sorry for being late to this thread.

I would like to suggest that the administration/ownership of any new website should be distributed among 2 or more people so that no one person has total control. The reason for this is that should the website hosting contract come up for renewal or other admin task need to be done, that one person not being available shouldn’t impact the availability of the website.

I would also like to suggest that if/when the new site is made available that a link to it is posted in this thread or in a prominent place on this forum.

I really liked the Calendar of Updates, I linked to it many times on my blog as a definitive source for keeping up to date with updates and security fixes for popular software. I also made a generous donation to the site the day it came back up in March this year. I was very saddened to see that it no longer exists.

While I would offer to assist with setting up the website; website design/coding is not a skill I possess. I know very little about running a site. My blog is hosted and I simply write the content for it. The UI of the website handles the rest.

Like the growing number of others I would be in favour of a new site being created with similar functionality and would be happy to financially donate to it.

Thanks everyone. Have a great day. :)

Well I am later than most others here especially since I was a calender mod. I am really sorry that CoU has been forced to end, but I think considering the participation it has been coming for quite a while.
However we need to continue to keep the memory of Donna going after all that she did. The best way I can think to do this is a fresh start using the best of CoU to start us off. How we make the new start though is something which is open to debate.
Lastly, I would like to thank ALL the staff who over the years worked on the site to keep others informed.

What typically happens with a domain when someone is deceased? It would be good to revive and continue the original domain if possible.

Hello everyone and thanks for all your support. I have a plan but I still need to talk with Daneil and a few other people before we move forward so please bare with me. Hopefully after this weekend I may have more details.

Thank you all and I looking to make forward progress even if it takes a little time. I'm no quitter so hang in there with us and I'm looking forward to the future of CoU even if we have to start off from scratch and I need to look into a few legal things too.

    Regards,

    Tim

    Go on lad!

Early days I know, but can I state here that I expect a cards on the table discussion about how things will work. Staff allocation etc, before any of it happens. There are aspects of working from COU that were linked to it's downfall and should not carry over.

I am very sadden by this and I really enjoyed COU. I was and am sort of a newbie as of last year and I do hope something can be done to revive the COU. I only knew a few people on here and that was Daniel who I highly respect and who is a dear fiend as Jasper I know as well.

@hardhead I'll be updating/upgrading my webserver this weekend. Who represents COU that has some knowledge as to your technical needs? I'd like to contact them and see what I'll need to prepare if that is the route chosen. I think we'd even be willing to provide our no longer used Xenforo license into the mix to at least get you guys up and running.

How was the control of COU after Donna passed, left in the hands of one person...It should have been handled better, I think...Coldinbus, had to much control, it seems...Why won't he give up control?

I thought there was (always) an insider group at COU...and that there were good lines of communication....From what has transpired, it seems not. Complacency got the better of things.

COU was broken. There's nothing wrong with one person in overall control, many sites operate in that way, but the backup duties should have been shared in the name of redundancy, and the domain issue resolved, at the very least.

Right or wrong, my personal view can only be that because Peter did actually keep things running for so long, I guess he sees it as his property. I fully understand that aspect, and the attachment. I sympathise with his feelings, but not with how it's played out.

CoU is a great site and I've used it often to spread the word on various software updates.
It would be great to get a similar site back up and running.

Thanks to all supported Donna's work and to those willing to persevere for the future of CoU.

hewee... was there with my Mom some years back. It was hard to see someone you've admired all your life, slowly become someone that doesn't know you.
My best thought during these times was ... yea, but I know them! :)

I have been a member of COU since the beginning with Donna. I have won prizes with Donna. I go to the site every day and never mist a day since the begening of COU. Since Donna deafh, it's not the same. It close for lack of direction. My greatest wish is that COU comes back. Wish I could help but I have nothing to offer exept my presence to COU'S site. Excuse my english, I am french Canadian.

Tim, while it's been a long time since I was involved, your unyielding energy and support for the site helped make it a site greatly admired by the users.
    Thank you very much!

Wow, it's surreal to see yourself being discussed on the internet! (was afraid to see what some folk wrote)

    Haroldo 'gave up' because...
    1. it was primarily a Windows security oriented site and I hadn't used Windows for years, so I not only lacked the knowledge of the issues, but the interest in them, either
    2. the forums never gained enough critical mass to be self sustaining, instead it was just a handful of regulars talking with each other
    3. we were losing more active members than we were gaining ...and the calendar required a lot of maintenance, each update (many hundreds per month) had to be entered manually
    4. the only activity that generated excitement were the software giveaways which attracted tons of visits, but no long term members
But I never "saw that the site wasn't being administered suitably"
The folks who were there were super dedicated devoting tremendous amount of their time for the benefit of the community
    They were a special bunch

I was a little surprised, but then again, not really, to see the site disappear
    It was fun
