So as previously stated, that's it....? You're just giving up?

What about the domain name? Surely the laptop drive contains one usable backup?

This is completely out of order and I don't believe it!

So who's for a reboot then....

    That's it? Aren't you bothered?

Don't all pile in at once..... There's a distinct lack of concern around here. This thread is an accurate reflection of COU forum itself.

CoU wasn't strong enough to survive. Now is dead.
    That's the evolution, as always.

    Kobayashi, Hello
What would you like us to do? Our hands are tied especially
since Peter has lost it all and no back up! If and when you have 'Gandolf like powers
to help pm one of us ;)

    This is the deal breaker

Not even close to the root problem and no understanding, but you gave up earlier. I would expect nothing less from you.

Hayc59: In best COU tradition, it's all talk and no action. No real involvement. No answers to my questions, still. As I said, It doesn't wash. And no hands are tied.

I'll continue to do the updates via twitter. No silly wizards required......

Thanks for all the updates as to what is happening with CoU.

    Very sad news.

I kind of with you on this.

I'm sorry for everything that took place but Daniel and I did the best we could. What I said in my previous post is what I was told from Peter. If anybody doesn't believe what I posted I don't know what to tell you other than the truth.

    Correct, I gave up.
What about you? You want from somebody else to spend time and money in order to keep CoU alive. Why? Just because you like CoU. Make your own then.

From my side: End of story.

'Cos I like COU? Don't be so shallow!! All my actions were out of respect for the site founder! Somebody who showed me great understanding.

Since I'm 'Data' from COU, I can state categorically that I did spend time and money on the board. I see you got your 'importance' in earlier, though I prefer to act the layman, but it's over now, so no matter. Do you think I wouldn't be here?

    Bye...

    Not blaming you, Tim.

    Hey guys,

I am brand new to the forum and to COU. I was able to use CoU since April for work but now that it is gone, it is very unfortunate. Although I don't completely understand how this site was able to keep its data up to date, I do know hardware. It was stated that the laptop died. Can we get more info about the definition of "died"? If the hard drive is still good, we can just remove it from the laptop and pull the data off. If the hard drive crashed, it is still possible to pull data off. From my understanding, all you need is a good backup restore and even a new site or to register the name with someone else. I can assist with the hardware if needed. I just need the laptop/hard drive and a description of what I am looking for or I can just do a data dump.

Let me know if I can help.

If hosting is needed for this website, I'll provide it. I registered to this forum just so that I could help. I have a web server that I've run game servers on for years (whiskeycraft.net) and I'd be happy to setup cou on my apache server. All the owner of the domain name would have to do is update the IP address, and I'd need a copy of the files & database.

Already quizzed the hard drive status and a backup... Even an old one would do. No reply. Therefore, no dice
Same goes for the Domain name. The original registrant is deceased.

'Nothing can be done' is all that's given.

CoU is, together with MajorGeeks, one of only two sites on the Internet that provides daily update information on a vast array of programs and applications. Both are invaluable!

And now someone has decided that CoU is just "gone", done with, finished.

I have been a member of CoU for a pretty long time, but I have no idea who this 'Peter' person is, or how he managed to obtain all rights for CoU from Donna. And how someone, all by himself, can decide the end of such an important website, or the community that has evolved around it. The reason being "a dead laptop"o_O

All the explanation we have heard here sound fishy. The expired domain name in February, now the non-paid server service, the non-backup, the non-communication.

Of course I do not know what is really going on, but I deplore the way how Donna's legacy is so nonchalantly thrown away!

The domain name is a major problem since Donna is deceased.
I posted here as soon as I found out what had taken place Pat.

Peter is the 'back room guy' who administers the whole running of the site, software, everything. Been there from the beginning I guess. He's the 'root' admin. As such, I guess it was logical that when Donna passed on, the domain would be passed to him. Now he shut up shop, the domain name should become the active communities keep IMO. Currently, it's like a cashable coupon.

The domain is a mystery. Still in Donna's name, it's in limbo, and saving Peters intervention, it seems nobody can do anything with it until it expires.

We knew there were problems, but this sudden plug pulling is a shock. As such, I find it distastful. More so considering the opinion I formed of Peter.

I am a registered member of COU, but I have rarely visited the site since Donna passed away.

However, it looks to me that someone doesn't want the site to continue.

    P.S. Is Haroldo still active?

Thanks.... it seems people like Haroldo saw that the site wasn't being administered suitably....Just my 2 cents worth.

My offer stands even if forming a new site. This website has been an invaluable source and I'd like to see it continue to operate and perhaps without poor management (as of late), flourish. Something the operators should realize however, is time is very important and the quicker you can transition even to a new domain name, the better. Ultimately if you do get the original domain name, it can point to an existing setup. As it stands with the old database / files part, these ultimately can be replaced. Not to mention a fresh start with a willing community may not entirely be a bad thing, it could be a very good thing.
