Vipre is below out-of-box protection. Never show improvement anymore.

TM, Panda, F-Secure, BD, Kaspersky, Tencent, Avira & Emsisoft leading the pack whilst Eset, Fortinet & eScan are the best of the rest.

Thanks for the update, impressive performance by a free product like Panda Free, despite the 7 FPs.

@ronjor Could you add AV-Comparatives to the thread title for clarity?

    Edit: Thank you ;)

McAfee seems to be coming back from the grave.

It's kind of interesting how many people gush over how high a detection rate a product has: "wow, the winner(s) is/are <insert product(s)> here".

Sure, having a high detection rate is great but it's not the be-all and end-all of an antivirus product. Many people seem to ignore one specific aspect: consistency. If I had to pick an antivirus for me (and thank god I don't) or pick who the real winners are, I would pick those that not only show decent performance but show it consistently. This indicates reliability. There are no guarantees that a product that has performed consitently throughout multiple tests won't have a bad month but it's less likely that it will happen, and it's more likely that it would return to its previous performance more quickly.
A product that performs amazingly one month and turns to almost garbage the next is not a product I would rather be using at all.

To me the actual winners are Kaspersky and ESET. These products have shown consistently good protection (not perfect in the case of ESET, but good enough) with very low (or no) false positives for months and even years.
To a lesser extent Fortinet, Avira and BitDefender which have some bad months when protection isn't as good or there are more false positives, but overall their strong periods prevail. I could put Qihoo's 360 here but we don't have information for the last months.
avast! is also rather consistent but not on par with them in terms of both protection and false positives.
Tencent seems to have improved drastically in the last few months but that's not enough. Yet! If this trend continues, it can be a winner.

And for at least 6 months now, F-Secure cannot solve its extraordinarily high False Positive rate.

IMO, the test methodology ought to punish such suites more severely, as they train to user to disregard security prompts and just click Allow; yet F-Secure appears consistently in the upper part of the results table, falsely making it seem that it provides protection comparable to other quality suites.

I brought these consistently bad results up with one of their sales reps when they called. They were embarrassed and admitted the product didn't have great detection. Called ended shortly after.

Are these products tested with "out of the box" settings? I can't find where this is specified.
