The universal "fix" for the Win10 intrusions is to un-install KB3035583. I didn't want to do that just yet in case I would need to use it witout having to re-install. The registry tweaks are unacceptable, so I just decided to turn of the "phone home" schedule which just happens to squash the tray icon, too.
Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Setup > gwx
Right click launchtrayprocess and refreshgwxconfig and select Disabled for each. That will take care of it but some may want to disable also Logon, OutOfIdle and refreshgwxconfig-B in GWXTriggers but Task Scheduler needs to be run under SYSTEM credentials and that's beyond the scope of this posting.

Alternatively, one can block gwxux.exe outbound in the firewall, if you don't mind an impotent tray icon.

Well, we can keep our fingers crossed on that. But until I find out 100% for certain I can install Windows 10 for free on a new drive, I can wait until I build the 6th gen i7 system I'm budgeting for late next year. At that point, buying an OEM DVD is painlessly amortized in the total cost. If the only option is to update (clean or not) a running Windows 7 or 8 system, thanks Microsoft, but no thanks. I'm just fine with 7 for another year.

I'm also wondering now if the process includes OEM key holders or is this just for the boxed DVD and new store-bought systems keys?

BTW, it's interesting to note how many are anxious to jump on the Windows Whole-Darn-Brand New-OS Update Bandwagon in the same forum that hosts the Bork Tuesday, Any Problems Yet? thread. :D Just kidding; everyone seems to have a ̶s̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶k̶e̶i̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ rollback strategy. It'll be interesting to see how Microsoft prevails in this.

Well I took the one step and the result wasn't very pleasant. From me Win 10 has proven to be Win 9.23

The question is are are you going to let the bad experience stop you or you can try to iron out the bugs from windows 10.

I don't know what @Peter2150 is going to do, but I'm going to sit back and watch the fiasco. This should be interesting, I'm hoping for the best. We'll see here shortly if it hits the fan. :D

The final release version is yet to released, @Peter2150 feedback(if he chooses to give it to Microsoft) will improve the final release version.

    Hi Carver

Two things. 1) I have a perfectly working Win 7 system. With Win 10 so far I'd have to replace 3 programs spending money on newer versions which buys me nothing.

    2) The deal killer. No real control of Windows updates. That isn't a bug. it's stupidity. A lot of people have complained on their feedback channel as have I. If they don't change back I am not going to install permenantly.

    1. That is to be expected, I may loose programs too including Blue-ray DVD. That is really the program designers fault for not releasing a compatible program with windows 10.
    2. You are correct it is their fault. But you can do something about it. Once you get the Release version of Windows 10 Home update to windows 10 Pro.

It seems that Pro doesn´t allow Windows Update control either, except in certain "business" environments. I think this is not clear at the moment.

    Hi Carver

on 1. In my case there are new releases, but I have to buy them and gain no extra functionality other then the "cloud" No gain.

on 2. No you can't do anything about it. The update process is a 3 step process a) Download b)prepare to install c) reboot and install

I am using pro and my Preview version is pro. Steps 1 and 2 happen automatically. You have no choice in what updates are included. Only option is for step 3, which you can defer.

Lack of ability to chose updates is a no go, plus I have had BSOD's during steps 1 and 2.

Like I said myself others providing feedback have said this is a deal breaker.

I have reserved my copy of Win X on both my Win 7 SP1 and Win 8.1 machines but I am now not so sure I want to be an early adopter - at least I will probably leave my Win 7 machine as is. Question: If I cancel my reservation, will I still be able to upgrade to Win X for free later (after July 29th but within the 12 months)?

After W10 gets installed, Home Editions will have no control over windows updates. The other aspect of this, is that auto update is currently the default setting for WU. There have to be thousands, or even tens of thousands (millions?) of W7/W8 users who have not changed this setting to notify. They automatically get their windows updates auto downloaded and installed ... and they will get W10 that way. I see 2 more problems on the horizon ...
    1. There are going to be a few users that will have their broadband usage go into overage charges because W10 is a 3GB download if they are not careful. So many rural areas users and those with no need for a massive GB plan will be in the cross-hairs.
    2. Though W10 may run on an existing PC, it may not run well. W8 users not so much, but W7 users for sure.
I have several friends and relatives who are not savvy PC users. If anything goes wrong with the upgrade or their PC has performance issues, they will be very confused. I have asked them if they received the W10 icon on their task bar and not one of them noticed it or knew what it was for. They all have W7 Home edition. I have changed WU to 'notify' on each of their W7 systems, but now I am hoping they do not click on the W10 upgrade and install it anyway. This is a catch 22 for them.

I'm thinking about Norton or any resident security. W10 will as I read. Uninstall Norton and reinstall W10 supported version of Norton. If not available W10 will install Defender (or what ever it's called w W10). So, I have to confirm the promised before July29th compatible Norton runs OK w W8.1/W10. Lot of rushing going on to meet Windows schedule.
The notion of W10 calling up Norton portal when Norton users on a calm day have trouble sometimes.
I'll wait for others to kick up a lot of dust. My W8.1 and Norton (despite opinions) works OK.

It will be interesting to see how smart the Windows 10 installer is when it comes to identifying incompatible security apps and uninstalling them during the upgrade. However it would be wise IMHO to proactively uninstall all resident security and disable all other third party auto-starting apps before running the Windows 10 installation. That should decrease the chance of failure and speed things up as well.

What I read about updates for Windows Pro wasn't encouraging. The deferment of any kind doesn't cut it. If I can't turn off auto updates totally and then select what I want to update, Win 7 stays on these machines until they die, and that is at least 5 years down the road.

You may be right, then it would be easier to just to do a clean install.

As I understand you can change your mind and cancel "reservation". Later you can reserve it again or just update once it is released.

    Earth .... occasionally
haakon , I've just come back to this thread and realized that I didn't thank you for answering my requests ....
...... how rude of me !

That's exactly the info I wanted , and I'm sure it was useful to others also .

I checked for KB3035583 ..... I'd already hidden it , and I never saw any tray icons .... so I reckon you've identified the culprit !

I'd shut down the usual Windows " phone-home " offenders in Task Scheduler a long time ago , but I haven't gone so far
as blocking all the outbound in the firewall.

I very much want to keep MS at arm's length from my system during this "wondrous adventure " that is the W10 roll-out.

But if I see a W10 iso download that works with the Product Key from existing W7 users .... I'll have one of those !

Anyway , belated thanks for great info .
