Why is MP4 video/audio always out of sync?

Lately, every mp4 I try to watch is out of sync. The player makes no difference, Potplayer, KMPlayer, VLC. Why is this happening? Is there a good mp4 codec I should use? AVIs play perfectly.

Did you installed some codecs lately? Lav Filters ? FFDshow? Or SVP?

I installed LAV filters awhile back. I've got FFDshow but I don't remember installing it so I'm not sure how long I've had it. SVP - I could only find AVSVPXCodec.dll in this path C:\Program Files\Common Files\AVSMedia\ActiveX.

Try uninstalling Lav Filters/FFDshow and see what happens. LAV Audio Filter had sync problems with some files. Windows 7/8 should be able to play MP4 files without other filters installed.

I uninstalled LAV filters but I'm not sure what to do about ffdshow, there's no entry for ffdshow in Remove Programs. The path where it's located is C:\WINDOWS\system32\vscodecpack_173. There are other folders and files in it besides ffdshow, "general," "real," "filters," "Haali." Should I just delete the ffdshow folder or the whole vscodecpack folder? There's no entry for it either in Remove Programs.

After I uninstalled LAV, the mp4s still don't work very well. They play choppy and if I fast forward they get all screwed up and out of sync. AVIs and MKVs don't do this at all.

    You can try MPC-HC

    The codecs are included

You can use an archive (zip or 7z) as a portable version for testing

vscodecpack_173 sound like a virus to me. Run a scan with Malwarebytes and try the Codec Tweak Tool.

I think that vscodecpack_173 folder might be the default system install folder for ffdshow, Haali, and few others. In XP when I set Potplayer to "System default" for AAC audio it uses ffdshow in that folder. I scan regularly with Microsoft Safety Scanner and it's never flagged it.

I reinstalled LAV and figured out how to set Potplayer to use the LAV splitter for MP4s and it's working good for now. Thinking back, I installed LAV because I was having problems with MP4s before. Keeping fingers crossed. :)

Where should ffdshow normally be installed in XP?

Ahh..I just remembered where it probably came from. Another program I was using the other day installed it. It's probably leftover from when I uninstalled the program. I don't think it's malicious but it's not much good for anything. I cut the vscodecpack_173 folder and now Potplayer is defaulting to LAV audio. Everything's working great now. Appreciate it! :)

You know this was exactly the reason why I switched to VLC media player way back in 2004. I was fed up with codec conflicts, leftover codecs, codecs misbehaving, codecs this and codecs that. Needless to say that I have been in peace since 2004. I recommend you do the same, uninstall and remove all codecs and codec packs from your system. Heck, start over with a fresh clean windows install and then stick with those media players that have codecs built-in, like VLC, SMPlayer, PowerDVD etc. You will be at peace too.

I'm glad VLC works for you. I've tried it. It has some pluses but also some minuses, like most of them I guess. I was using KMPlayer before but it was an endless stream of one problem after another so I finally ditched it for Potplayer. It's not perfect either but at least it's working now, and the MP4 issue is really the only major problem I've had with it.

Yes I did, but I couldn't tell which file was for what. Their website is a little wacky too. Never could get Help to work. The LAV splitter fixed the problem.

Just in case, MPC-BE works better for me than MPC-HC.
