Every once in awhile someone will send me a .docx file but I can't read it. I have Microsoft works, any suggestions for a free reader?
AbiWord can open .docx files. Their latest Windows version is 2.8.6. There's also a Portable version, courtesy of PortableApps.com.
You can install MS Office Compatibility Pack and open it with Microsoft Works: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/933428 I was using it when I had Office 2003 installed.
Libre Office is my suggestion too! Libre Office is a large installation but it's what I'm moving to from Office. I've done some very basic tests and have decided that for me, with the exception of macros in Excel, Libre can handle whatever I will throw at it. It's free and highly, actively supported. https://www.libreoffice.org/
For several years, I've used DocX Viewer for that, and for opening newer versions of .doc files people send me. http://www.epingsoft.com/docx/docxv.asp ---- rich
Thanks to all for their suggestions which I've taken under advisement. Thankfully I don't have to deal with this right away as this is a very busy time for me.
If you do not mind online office suites, you can always use: Office Online https://office.live.com/ Google Docs https://docs.google.com/ With these 2, you also get basic editing features.
