Introducing AX64 Time Machine - hybrid imaging/snapshot software

Paul, your modus operandi (COLD restore via BOOT menu option when HOT restore fails) is very common amongst AX64 users who have that "occasional" HOT restore problem... they remain happy at this point while development is ongoing (I think...).

With your new system configuration (UEFI/GPT... Windows version not important), if you want AX64 to be your bailout for all things bad on your system (incl HDD/SSD failure), I don't believe that will work. There are some ISSUES when trying to restore all the necessary partitions for a successful restorations. The example referenced in the link provided is very valid, even for your W7 system... beware.

I'm sure it will function well in just returning to snaps on an existing system but I don't believe it provides full protection against all failures.

Here's an email I received from Nathan regarding the new beta that's being developed:

    To all,

I'm noticing a truly BIZZARE problem with "AX64 Time Machine 1.4.1.48" on "Windows Ultimate 64".
I don't have time to investigate this right now, as I'm installing programs on a new PC build.
But if anyone could take a peak, it would be really appreciated.

I use "MadVR" software on my PC. This is a video renderer.
For some mysterious reason, the latest settings and/or version are retained...even when I restore to a past backup (which should have a past version and/or settings).

The program is installed in my C drive's "86" program files folder (the drive that is backed up).
I follow MadVR's "install.bat" method of installation, and don't do anything unorthodox.
So there's really no reason it should survive a restoration to a past point.

How is it beating Time Machine?

Paul, I would STOP and COLD restore to the same time point in question to see if the SETTINGs remain... they shouldn't. If they do, there's a real problem.

The AX64 Devs have said that there are real design issues with both the v1 & v2 HOT restores and the v2 WARM restores. You might be a victim of one of those...

Or settings are saved in a cloud, a dropbox folder, etc.

Is AX64 back up and running again?

Or settings are saved on a second drive along with video files maybe.

Not yet, there is supposed to be a new beta any day now.

I thought those issues are related to the hanging? If it's as what you said, then there are chances that the restore result is compromised?

Master Imp, my response to Paul was based on some of my last accomplished testing which showed FULL completed restores but the integrity of the restore was definitely in question (REGISTRY changes, settings forgotten, activations lost). Based on that I felt the only way he could know for sure was to do a COLD restore which should work in its entirety.

PS- did you find that plane yet?

    Hmm, maybe hardware/system specific then.
Nope, still no plane. Poor souls.

Still going strong with 2.0.0.528. Backup and restore has been faultless for me. I take it there haven't been any updates? Just incase I've missed any.
Would like to see a gaming mode or something as every hour the slowdown happens while it backs up. Just the price you pay for reliable backups I suppose.
I could turn it off but usually forget. I preffered the way the old every hour worked than on the hour for some reason.

Well, there is a future, the question is whether AX64 has a place in it or not. Personally I hope so but............

How and why is this project dying. Please forgive my laziness, but I'm not looking forward to reading 400 pages of messages.

There are two major problems. 1) getting to work technically, and 2) management problems

Nathan, the tech support specialist wrote on April 3rd:
"Our lead developer said max 2 weeks, so let's hope it's before then."

So we're approaching the 2 week mark. What occurs or doesn't occur will be an indication of whether the new lead developer is grounded in reality or...

Is there really a new developer making 2 in total or is it still 'the only' developer?

Fair question. Guess I was hoping they found a new lead developer after the last one left.

Am I correct in recalling that Isso was/is involved with Ultimate Defrag from DiskTrix? Another product left hanging, the latest version 4.0.98.0 is still pretty buggy.

Or am I totally mistaken on that?

    The same.

It seems the page has not been updated in 3 years more or less. And, to me, it appears as a storefront with no one minding the store - except to collect any payment from purchases. Which I would guess would be a few per day.

    I hate these softstore fronts!

I am asking myself why such a reputable forum like Wilders supports these sort of developers/people.
