I have been using Prevx now Webroot* since 2006. Whilst I have a couple of serious gripes with the product, one of which is the Web Filter Extension, from the very beginning I have been just blown away by the superiority of its multi-layered AV engine.

This may be stating the obvious, but I think it is very important to personally use the product in order to appreciate its merits and/or demerits.

~ Comments have been removed so as to not restart the back and forth complaints and post reporting ~
*For those who don’t know, Webroot acquired Prevx, a small British computer security company, in 2010 and completely rebuilt their AV product from the bottom up, using Prevx’s technology.

Thanks, I'll try your suggestion, it's been long enough ago, that I don't remember the specific instructions that I rec'd from wrsa support, but I have nothing better to do this weekend  If it works, I'll let y'all know. ditto if it doesn't work. :ouch:

Lately I see more & more avs with versions for mac. I have to guess some are as good or better then wrsa_mac. I do recall having mac "permissions" issue discussion with wrsa support, but that did not get wrsa removed from my macbook_pro. Lately whenever I reboot mac, I manually stop wrsa and I think it mostly stops until next reboot. will try the mac safe mode procedure mentioned above.

    Hi simmersKool,
Yes please let me know one way or another if WSA gets uninstalled in Safe Mode. It works for me when WSA gets stubborn. I was wondering if Webroot is corrupted and you might need to reinstall to uninstall? Anyways I have a a program I use called AppCleaner http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/ which I don't think that will uninstall WSA but maybe some remmants left behind from Webroot?

Well I haven't looked back since installing Webroot but I did look for AVs awhile back before finding Webroot and I saw ClamXAV? Which I didn't care for and uninstalled that and I haven't looked for awhile for any AV's for the Mac..so I'm sure I'm behind the times. But I trust Webroot and you can't beat the Support anywhere, so to be honest I haven't paid attention to any new AVs. I have talked to Mac Support and they claim you don't need an AV because Macs don't get viruses. Well that's not true anymore is it? Bad PUAs and alot of Mac Security updates have been issued and we do need an AV on the Macs. IMO Webroot covers all bases but each to their own right? I have just checked to see what the Apple Store has for AVs so there are a few more AVs listed....

BTW: You are right the verifying of permissions won't help the uninstalling of Webroot. It's only when installing that it's useful for Webroot to run correctly if one is having troubles. I usually verify once in awhile anyways because these permissions can cause issues if they aren't correct.

I find this a bit unclear...I'm understanding that it is a free 1 year license, for users that haven't held a license before, and they would see only a one month 'extension'?

Not sure how attractive this is, and there are quite a few good (e.g. 50-60% off, incl full support) offers out there.

I'm checking to see if this is even Legit! And free updates are Program Updates as WSA is a Full Cloud Anti-Malware and no need for definition updates as it's always up to date.

    Yeah, you are right.

I want to try out the Kool-Aid.

Since I could not find a list of products that conflict on the Webroot website, I had to open up a ticket. That's strange. I'd think they would just publish a list. But whatever.

    Your Bud,

Webroot is supposed to be able to co-exist with any other AV product. However, I seem to remember that people have reported some problems running it alongside BitDefender. Apart from that, I believe there are no problems. In fact, many WSA users (including some of those who post here on Wilders) do run WSA alongside other AV programmes of their choice. For many years, I ran Nod32 with WSA and I had no hassles at all.

I should add that if you do this, you may get the impression that Webroot is not doing its job but that the other AV is often detecting the malware instead. This is deliberate. WSA is designed to take a back seat and let the other AV do the job if the other detects the malware. That is why it does not conflict with other AV programmes.

Personal opinion: in my opinion, it is wrong to use words like 'Kool-Aid' and 'Webfruit'. We should avoid using slogans containing loaded messages and which in my view add nothing to the rational argument. We should be logically discussing the products on the basis of their merits or demerits.

It would be helpful if the website included basic info like this... the Bitdefender part. I'll either run in on an old laptop with McAfee, or I have an old Mac I'll throw it on.

Good tip. Maybe I'll take the old Norton off the old Mac prior to running it.

Hmmmm.... there are product nicknames all over the forums. And that term has been used repeatedly in this thread including by those who like WSA. It seems that some are way over-sensitive except when it is them that use a term. Don't want to validate or encourage hypocrisy, but I hear what you are saying.

Agreed and I will keep reporting such comments such as these, I find it disrespectful and meaningless. I don't saying anything about other products and don't care to, it's about Security and this is the Webroot SecureAnywhere Thread. And remember what LowWaterMark said here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thre...ion-update-thread.364655/page-48#post-2480174

    Thanks,

    Hypocracy defined.

I'd prefer working with helpful members here. If you could stay out of it, I think things would go better. You have a demonstrated inability to get along with those who you disagree with.

    Thank you.

Frank tells it like it is, and I agree. These are the same reasons why I personally have a very difficult time taking Webroot seriously. I haven't even been at Wilder's all that long, yet I have witnessed several informative threads get taken of course and destroyed. And I have also witnessed close to a dozen incidents where said user/member has behaved in manners in which most other members would have been banned for. But, some folks here have the mindset that they are above the rules and hidden behind colors/badges/advertisements.

Yes sir... and thank you for speaking up.

You are right. "Said Member" threw off the thread above. Let's get back to the business of the thread.

    ------------

Ok, after a search, it appears that WSA is much more effective on a Windows platform than on a Mac.

Is this correct, or was that just an off test result?

I wish I can be able to use my 3 year / 8 PC license of Webroot as it's really light, but so far, my review of Webroot SecureNowhere is:

    - very Buggy (webroot filter) that hasn't been fixed for over a year, don't care if it's fixed in the beta, it's 1 year for god's sake those people need to get it out to the public ASAP

    - No ability to add a folder to exclusions so if you have a program that works best without interference from an AV (such as SVP), you're out of luck

    - Uninstaller doesn't work 100% in Windows and doesn't work at all on the mac without submitting a support ticket, then waiting for support to logon to the mac system entering 10s of lines of code in the console to manually remove it, Webroot here to me, is no better than an actual virus
    F
    - now to the most important part.... despite the reviews and scores, every system I've had it installed on, I got returned within days complaining of weird behaviour......

most recent incident: I personally bought a brand new Dell Inspiron 17 for a police officer friend of mine and since I wanted it to be light as heck, I gave him my WSA license......updated Windows, installed wsa, all the norms we tech people do on a system......

2 days later he calls me saying "what's up with this pop up everytime I start my computer?"

I logged into his sytem using TeamViewer and saw the popup, it was EagleGet trying to download something from some fishy address, I quickly canceled it, uninstalled Webroot and then ran a scan with MBAM and there we are, he had a few viruses....how did he get them? maybe PUPs, or I don't know since I've installed ABP for him in his Firefox so it couldn't be some bad ad that he clicked on...... essence of the story, he and many others I've installed it for DID get infected......it's so called rollback feature is a pure marketing gimmick

One of the most people I respect here is zfactor and he recommended Webroot to me saying that he installs it on clients' computers and never hears back from them but my experience was different, the above is just one example every computer I've installed it on comes back to me infected. The fact that people run WSA with another AV just comes to show that it is not an AV on its own, more like a compliment to an AV like MBAM.

Seems like if I or any other reputable member on this forum even says anything bad about WSA, they got flamed because the WSA supporters don't like it, very unprofessional IMO. Every product has its quirks and Webroot wins the throne when it comes to False positives and problems.

    Thanks for the info Mortal.

The part that does concern me are the uninstalling issues.

I've never felt that testing an AV in a VM gives a very accurate representation of the AV.

And reverting to an earlier set point has given me issues.

I'll have to go back through this thread and see what others have said about uninstalling.

    Thanks,

    -Frank

You will find numerous threads about this on the Webroot forums, especially the Mac version, causes huge slowdown on the system then when you try uninstalling it, it keeps coming back like a virus on every reboot... even if you manually stop it and move it to the trash, always comes back unless you have an engineering degree in Mac OS to be able to use the console, you will not be able to get rid of it.

I was ashamed infront of the company that I recommended Webroot to where they bought Webroot Endpoint Security license for all their PCs and the ones that use the Mac had a lot of complaints. I cannot trust an AV company that cannot even get their uninstaller to work right nor do they have an uninstall tool like every other AV vendor does.

Also, I don't recommend testing an AV in a VM, the performance will not be 100% the same as when you use it on a real live working machine.

The referral link for WSA in someones signature here DOES turn up in very strange spots, such as this; (up to and including fake domains sounding similar to Webroot)

    http://stuffgate.com/wrbroot.com

    http://www.sitetrail.com/wevroot.com

    It also appears on a series of horribly formatted reviews, all scoring it perfect or almost perfect;
    http://hdvconnect.com/blog/antivirus-internet-security/webroot-antivirus-with-spy-sweeper/pdf.html

But I do find it hard to take seriously, largely because of experiences dealing with representatives of it. Most importantly, being told my father in-laws machine is 'fine' and that the plethora of PUA/PUP's installed, running, while WSA was installed are causing no issues - when clearly they were causing issues.. I think a lot of us really would enjoy loving Webroot, but generally find it impossible for these, and similar reasons.

Stay on topic please. Thank you.

Ok, I'll go read more... but it appears that putting it on a Mac is not a good idea at this time.

    thanks again,
