Well it does work using this format "\\JOHN-PC\External drive\"

I changed the drive letter and it did not affect it.

You do need to setup a share on the drive enable the write permissions. Can anyone see any holes in this method?

I can't see any reason why Macrium would object, though not sure I've actually tried it myself - maybe somebody else has and can confirm.

That was just what The Rollbackfrog talked about earlier . Control is good and control over something that overwise runs automatic is nice when it comes to sensitive stuff . I will look in to it with strong interest and , thank you !

 

Should have thought about this a bit more. Windows does retain the old drive letter for a while or reboot. Since the drive letter is attached to the sharing, changing the letter eventually makes the mapping unavaible. So back to square one.

I have been running the schema and it has made the Full backup -00-00.mrimg, missed out the daily differential (but not really worried by that) and gone on to make successive daily incrementals on an hourly basis with extensions of -01-01.mrimg, followed by -02-02.mrimg & most recently -03-03.mrimg, which is not what I was expecting. I was expecting the daily incrementals to be somthing like -01-01.mrimg, -01-02.mrimg, -01-03.mrimg, etc.

Is that because I had to define a separate daily incremental for each hour that I want one or is there are a way to set up one daily incremental that repeats over several specific times in a day?

I suspect not but am not sure.

Re missing diff: if two or more backups of differing types are scheduled to take place at the same time, the 'larger' backup will take preference and the other one will be skipped. So it sounds like the full and diff where scheduled to take place at the same time, so it skipped the diff.

The numbering of the incrementals looks okay (same as mine) - not sure why it does it the way it does...

Re hourly incrementals: AFAIK what you did is fine - I believe Rollbackfrog does it this way. Personally I just set the incremental to daily, then edit the task in Windows Task Scheduler, changing it to hourly. Just a matter of preference.

Thanks for the further information. The Full & the diff for today were scheduled to take place at 9am & 10am today respectively (both with a if missed do at next start up) and as I started the schema late this afternoon it is those two that 'clashed' hence the full took precedence. I might as a result just not schedule a diff for the same day as the full or make sure that they are scheduled to take place at the same time so that on the day that the full is made a diff won't be. Will have to give that one some thought.

Glad to see that the numbering is the same as yours, given that I have based my schema on what you are doing...that gives me more confidence.

Re hourly incrementals: what I did seems to work but I think that what you did (create just one incremental set to daily, then edit the task in Windows Task Scheduler, changing it to hourly) saves a lot of set up and so I may in future reset mine up like this...but will leave it for the moment.

Seem to be talking to myself about this, but in case anyone is interested I have found you can dispense with drive letters and use mount points instead. This means I can set up mounts points for my external drives in one partion on my machine and that will eliminate the problem of drive letters changing when adding another device.

I have yet to see if this is foolproof but have proved it by swapping the hd to another HDD Docker and it is found ok. This is on eSata, I assume it will work on USB as well but have not tried.

Has anyone else tried it and were there any problems?

 

For anyone interested, today I found that setting the Reflect Recovery boot manager ON works seamlessly with FD-ISR (and likely Raxco's IR).
POST, followed by:
FD-ISR boot screen with the option to switch to a different snapshot, followed by:
Reflect option to boot to Windows or Reflect Recovery

 

Pete, what problems are you referring to? I have Shadow Protect installed as well as MR v6 on one of my machines and if I had to make a choice between the two I would uninstall Shadow Protect. The decision wouldn't even be close.

 

On the schedule tab (last tab possibly) , at the end of the entry's row it says Enabled (I think). You can click and disable it.

 

Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Task Scheduler

<select> the task you wanna disable then use the RIGHT pane, under "Selected item" and <click> "Disable,"

To continue, return and <click> "Enable"

You don't even have to go all the way to the right of the line you want to 'tweak', you can just right click on it and select disable or other options from the context menu displayed as a result.

Well, I think that's what I'll do, and wait to hear about a second reliable product that can be installed along with MR v6 without problems. I currently also use Windows 8.1's built in imaging software and different target types (external hard drive and Blu-Ray disks). A second non-Microsoft product would give me a level of security that would be adequate for me. Thanks Pete.

When you start a new backup series, is it just a case of creating a new folder and editing the script, or is there some mechanism for doing this in Macrium?
