anon: Thank you for posting that. I also had the CEIP program on - and it's obvious that the recent Windows update exploits that. I disabled it, and cleaned up all the stuff it placed in my Task Scheduler.

    Thanks :)

In Programs and Features>View Installed updates. On the top right side there is a search box where you can type in the KB # you want and then it will pop up in the screen if you have that same KB # installed. You can delete it there. That's how it works for me in Win 7 X64.

    Win 7 Home Premium SP1 x64.

Thanks niki , that's useful to know .
I never thought of looking there !
I should have quoted your post instead of pasting the text... sorry

In future , my policy on Bork Tuesdays will be to check update numbers first ,
and hide them if they are already installed.

I still can't understand why I am being notified of updates which are already installed !!

What are Microsoft doing / thinking ?
    ....... oh , look ..... I just answered my own question ( it's Microsoft ! )

my windows 8.1 doesn't find any updates
    in the view update history there are (KB3025417) 3046049 3034344 3032323 3029606 3000850

but installed update some are missed
is there a tool to check my w8.1 pro updates?

w7 has a problem with disk clean , after a disk clean (updates) starts some issues

Hmmm ... upborks out of their usual borking cycle fill me with apprehension, particularly when they are 'optional'.

Guess I'll option to file this under 'hide update' as usual then. ;)

To be honest, if I really don't need this update, and it appears to be entirely optional as to whether I apply it or not, I don't see what I gain by actually applying it. I have auto-updating disabled anyway. Periodically I will also manually check for updates. These days, with MS updates you never know what's going to happen. I do have a recent (Macrium) image to fall back on if it causes problems. I'm just a tad suspicious of these apparently superfluous and optional updates however, as I have lost a lot of faith in Microsoft's ability to implement them without problems arising.

Is that what the '5583' update is for? I couldn't deduce it from the helpful MS page lol. ;)

If you noticed a new patch released via Automatic Update on Friday and can't figure out what it's for, you aren't alone. A quick poll among my usually knowledgeable experts reveals they are mystified as well.

KB 3035583, entitled "Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1," is an optional patch. Unless you've opted to automatically install optional patches (a decidedly risky proposition), you'll have to check the box next to the patch in the Optional list, before it will install on your system -- which is all for the best....http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...w-about-mystery-windows-patch-kb-3035583.html

'Apparently Microsoft wants its users quite aggressive in Windows 7 and 8.1 lead away and encourage them to move to Windows 10. Who does not want to join the promotional dance, can the Windows update KB3035583 either hide or if it is already on the computer, uninstall it.' ~ op cit

Yeah, nice try pushing Win 10 Microsoft. Close but no cigar. ;)

@zapjb You should keep it, as it is used by Windows Update.

Edit: I did some digging and it is a downloader for Windows 10. GWX is an acronym for Get Windows 10.
