This is my first harddrive failure ever. The SSD is not even a year old :(
Today when I came home and waked up my computer from sleep as usual, done it hundred of times. First I noticed that I could not log in to windows coz windows wouldnt take input from keyboard. So I restarted and got the message that I didnt have any hard drive to start from. Checked in the bios and no SSD. I took the SSD out and put it back several times, but still dead.

I tried a couple of another SSDs and computer found them without problems so it wasnt the cable or something else with the computer.
I mounted my old 120GB OCZ agility SSD and restored a backup (had just enough space for the backup image, only 1.94GB free :)).

My question is what could´ve happened with the SSD? Its totally dead and I guess it is not recoverable in any way?

sadly i see this happen way more often with ssd's then hard drives still to this day. normally with ssd's when they are going to fail from what we see they just do and they do it quickly. this is why backups are so important. we do not deal with the sandisk brand but from what a few guys i know who do sell them tell me is they are not as reliable as some other brands. its hard to say why it died without seeing the drive and or being able to run any tests on it you probably will not know why.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, it went very quickly and without any sort of warning. I wonder if it has anything to do with that I put my computer to sleep (not hibernate) every day, maybe it couldnt handle the frequent on and off?

I do have a reliable imaging software that saved me without any hassle even though the OCZ SSD is smaller. I have now ordered a Samsung EVO 850 series, I hope it is more reliable.

i doubt it. with ssd really the one thing that wears them over time is only the read and writes. actually putting it to sleep it wasnt fully turning off. it was in a ready type state. but i really do not think that had anything to do with it. honestly i just think it died and would have then no matter what you did. i would contact sandisk about warranty if you have any left for sure. and yes the samsung ssd's from my experience are very reliable.

Wow, this is a bit scary to read, I currently use a Toshiba 120GB SSD, I also put it in standby-mode most of the time. My 8 year old Maxtor 250GB HDD is still working, even after being used extensively. But I will soon make a back up of important files, I became a bit lazy, this topic is a good reminder.

@sukarof: Sorry to hear your drive failed. The drive should be under warranty if you want to file a claim, which raises the following tangential issue:

Is there a consensus here on how to handle a failure of this type of product when it happens within the warranty period? I have several Samsung SSDs and have yet to experience issues with them. However, if one failed I would be a bit leery of shipping it back for a warranty replacement considering it would still contain tons of sensitive information (e.g., financial, business, tax) that could be retrieved. So, if one of these things fails completely, is there any way to sanitize it?

Yeah, there should be warranty left on the drive since it is not a year old yet. But as you say, there are alot of private data on it. I am not sure yet what to do. Easiest way for me is to avoid Sandisk after this. I am not saying that all Sandisk drives are bad, it could just be that I was unlucky coz there is bound to be some that are bad, regardless of brand. But I chose to avoid products that fail me once.

As zfactor said, the standby mode probably had nothing to do with this failure, that was just a wild idea I had.

This was my first hard drive failure since I started computing back in -93. I have been lucky I guess. I have always been a bit surprised that people on forums have had hard drive fails since I never had one, but now I am a bit wiser and can vouch for "it can happen to anyone" :)

I have a Samsung EVO in my laptop and it's a great drive, very reliable.

Other reliable brands I would also buy: Intel, Crucial, HyperX/Kingston, OCZ

    Hi sukarof,

actually the standby could be related with the problem (at least some crucial m4 suffered from this).
You could try using crucial's power cycle instructions to see if it can revive the ssd.

pandlouk i have only seen that happen where that type of procedure worked one time for me. give it a shot you never know but i have not had great luck with reviving ssd's that way

Wow this doesn't look good, I think I have a power outage once or twice a year, but that surely can not kill a SSD?

Yes, I also never had a HDD failure in 10 years, but I do get a bit scared reading all those "my SSD died" stories. I currently don't really use my SSD extensively (no virtual machine software testing), but perhaps it's a good idea to put some of my data on the HDD.

Yes, it can and it can also kill an hdd.
With the ssd's I do not know why it's happening (there was a study/experiment that demostrated that it could happen and someone had posted it in wilders last year?)
With the hdd's can happen, because of a sudden movement/retraction of the hdd heads. (the main reason why the manufacturers have adopted the frequent parking of the heads)

    Both are rare though.

    You're welcome sukarof,

pity that didn't work. By the way how old was the ssd?
From my experience and bad lack with hdds (1/3 fail on me, when I buy them:mad: ) I trust no hdd unless it's in use for 2-3 months (the problematic ones usually fail in the first 2-4 weeks of usage).

Good news, I had a power outage a couple of days ago, and my SSD didn't die.

With SSD's Always Disable write cache buffer flushing:shifty:

By default, Windows* write-cache buffer flushing is enabled to ensure data integrity. This means that the system will periodically instruct the storage driver to write all cached data to the main storage media. These periodic commands result in decreased overall system performance.

    @ DVD+R

Yes, that's a good tip, luckily I turned it off months ago. BTW, a bit off topic, but does anyone have any experience with this app:

Although the SSD that came with my MSI GT70 0NC in 2012 is slower than usual, it hasn't died on me yet.
