Free proxy servers are all too often botnet slaves that host malware. Also, I don't think that they would handle Skype very well. Using a VPN would be better. Maybe one of the free VPNs available through http://www.vpngate.net/ would work for you.

Yes. I don't use vpngate VPNs, no. Check the recently active VPN threads here for suggestions. You can also read the guides linked in my sig. I'm not aware of any worth using. I'm not sure what you mean here.

OK, I get it. You would need to install a VPN client, such as OpenVPN or SoftEther (see vpngate). But otherwise there's no need to modify skype connection preferences. Everything uses the VPN by default, unless you set a routing exception. But if you care about leaks, in case the VPN goes down, you need firewall rules. De nada
That depends on what you mean by "safe" I'm about 100% sure that HideMyAss free proxies are not botnet slaves. And they probably don't drop malware. Skype on its own has decent encryption. You don't have to worry about casual eavesdropping on your conversations. NSA and big government is another matter since Microsoft bought it and controls its communication nodes. In the old days--like 6 years ago--it was much better in all aspects and your phone conversations through Skype were probably more secure than though the phone company. It is not high bandwidth at all and any of the free VPNs available will work with it. Besides VPNgate, there are free subscriptions to F-Secure Fredome and Steganos OkayFreedom VPN available now. Check www.giveawayradar.weebly.com. F-Secure has a good client and Steganos has a mediocre one. That being said, I've had a VM with the Steganos client exiting in Mexico running for a couple of months now. Once connected, it works but you have to be on top of it and make sure it connected.

I feel VERY safe with Riseup. You have to send them an email explaining why you need it. They have gone to court protecting a users identity and won. They are primarily for political activists, gay groups and that sort of thing. So come up with a reasonable letter and they will give you an account with excypted email.
Given your concerns, and depending on your partners, you might want to consider alternatives to Skype based on OTR. For me, it's not just the aspect of possibly unwarranted interception on Skype, it's also now the ads that are now plastering it - any one of which might be tracking or malware oriented. Incidentally, Skype runs OK in a Sandboxie sandbox, which can be deleted after every session, which can mitigate against this to some extent (not the network intercept obviously).
In dealing with skype, I've had a paid subscription for many years so I'm not dealing with the ads. I don't use it anonymously. The MS takeover has been very frustrating because they have disabled the old clients which worked and don't seem to care for those of us who use it for basic voip service. I've had to use an android client which is really bad compared to the symbian client they disabled. I've found some dedicated skype phones which still seem to be supported and will try one eventually. I've found no real substitute for Skype. Most of the alternative services don't support calling normal telephones very well or provide a regular phone number and the price of most regular VOIP providers is at least twice as much as what skype charges. So much that I might as well pay for a cell phone plan. MS is now pushing skype through automatic updates and I get an option for skype along with the usual MS patches. This emphasis on Skype as the new Messenger and the "Skype Experience" is totally at odds with the cheap telecommunication and voip service that is Skype's foundation. Back on topic, I don't agree that the free VPN services are completely untrustworthy. They vary a lot and VPNgate, for example, is pretty sincere and open in its purpose and outlook. What you have to worry about is badly configured servers because it is a volunteer system. The advantage is that there is absolutely no connection to your real identity through a financial transaction of any kind and you can use VPNgate servers on top of another VPN tunnel for a just one session and then go on to another one. Free subscriptions to commercial providers are the same as paid ones and whatever policies the provider has apply. I collect them and use them as a second hop on top of my paid subscription. Every one I've tried so far, Security Kiss, Cyberghost, Steganos Okay Freedom, and F-secure Fredome has failed in some aspect that I would require for a paid service but all are ok in the limited use I'm making of them. This is a bit subjective. The only reason I keep Steganos is the Mexican exit node. I've resided in that country and have used the internet from there so I'm familiar with a few things particular to that location that aren't widely available from outside.
