Before this, I have always been forced to use self-signed certs because cost (yeah, Im a cheap b*****d).
Wilcard cert from CA companies just cost tooooo much ....

Why "Let's Encrypt" Won't Make the Internet More Trustworthy

Even though Let’s Encrypt has no apparent business model, let’s suppose for a minute that it gets some market share. Over time, vendors might trust its longevity enough to build support into their routers, webcams, and other devices. When their end-user customers set up the device, it would automatically certificate-fetch from Let’s Encrypt. That’s the only world in which self-signed certificates might become a thing of the past. But that world is years away. So like the junk DNA within all of us, I predict that self-signed certificates will live on for at least a few more generations.

I wonder how they will audit subscribers. If it is looser than 10$ Rapid SSL certs, it won't make internet more trusted place.

Let's Encrypt Becomes Linux Foundation Collaborative Project

The Let's Encrypt initiative today announced that it is becoming a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. The Linux Foundation is well-known as the home of Linux development, but it has also expanded in recent years to host multiple open-source collaborative efforts, including the Xen hypervisor, OpenDaylight software-defined networking and Dronecode projects.

ISRG Engages NCC Group for Let's Encrypt Audit

ISRG has engaged the NCC Group Crypto Services team to perform a security review of Let’s Encrypt’s certificate authority software, boulder, and the ACME protocol. NCC Group’s team was selected due to their strong reputation for cryptography expertise, which brought together Matasano Security, iSEC Partners, and Intrepidus Group.

ISRG Legal Transparency Report, January 2015 - June 2015

Transparency regarding legal requests is an important part of making sure our users can trust us, and to that end we will be publishing reports twice annually. With the exception of this first report, reports will be published three months after the period covered in order to allow us time to research all requests and orders received during the period.

A sea change in HTTPS web encryption is coming and it's free

Let's Encrypt has set a public availability date of November 14th 2015, at which time their root certificate will have been cross-signed and the general public will be able to obtain free, trusted certificates. This fall, a new era of easily obtained web security will arrive. HTTPS will become the new normal for sites over the coming years at a pace previously unseen.

Since we announced Let’s Encrypt we’ve often been asked how we’ll ensure that we don’t issue certificates for phishing and malware sites. The concern most commonly expressed is that having valid HTTPS certificates helps these sites look more legitimate, making people more likely to trust them.
