Thanks for the tip. Not to beat a dead horse, but as I'm starting to understand the usefulness of the XML file, why would anyone opt not to save it?
I can only speak for myself; but, I chose not to save it. However, after reading the above, I'm pretty sure I wish that I had. My reasoning at the time was that I only do manual incrementals about monthly or so with MR. And, I really thought I needed to open MR first to get any updates, so I might as well just right click once MR was opened. I'm used to only using imaging backup tools as manual tools. I've not used any of the continuous incrementals like for example ShadowProtect does. The truth is, I need to learn more about automating my imaging process rather than only doing it manually.
Well... just like you discovered, most people don't even know what it is so they dump that when they get a chance. I think it's one of its most useful features
I see that now. Being a trial user, MR won't give my suggestions much if any attention, but based on what I learned today I believe MR should replace that XML prompt with a 'set & forget' setting.
I would suspect that won't happen. I also suspect a majority of users like it the way its. I know I do
Hi Gang Have a couple of questions. When building the RE, one of the options is going to a USB device, which is what I want to do. I have a relatively new USB3.0 flash drive which has 32Gb capacity and 11Gb free. I currently use the drive for some data storage with the ability to transfer it back and forth between machines. Here is what I want to do: 1. Remove all the data on the flashdrive 2. Run the PE builder and select the USB option. 3. Replace the data. If I do this will I be able to a) boot from the drive and b) still use it for data transfer. Thanks, Pete
You don't even have to remove the data. Macrium will not format it if it doesn't have to. And yes, you can use it for other data too.
@ Peter2150 ( Here is what I want to do: 1. Remove all the data on the flashdrive 2. Run the PE builder and select the USB option. 3. Replace the data. If I do this will I be able to a) boot from the drive and b) still use it for data transfer. ) The answer is Yes and Yes if you do exactly the above. The drive will boot and u can use it for data transfer .. @ TheRollbackFrog ( @warrior99, @Peter2150... may I ask how you were able to obtain the license necessary to completely test the v6 version of this product... and not the slightly brain dead TRIAL version? ) I got mine from Macrium I live in the Uk some license's for version v6 have been given early to some of Macrium's larger clients already, and no I done work for Macrium and only got the one license..
Hey guys if you are testing the RDR, run chkdsk on the disk before reatore, and then again afterward, and see if the disk still reports no problems. I am seeing something being corrected. Pete PS. I tried adding an incremental to a chain using 5.3 with 5.3 Then did a restore with V6 and it worked.
Pete, exactly how did you do the restore (Local BOOT, RECOVERY MEDIA, etc.)? Or are you talking about non-SYSTEM volume restore?
I am rebooting to Recovery Media to restore my system volume. So that is what I did in this case. Pete
okay so i went ahead and bought the 5.3 upgrade now do i need to do anything to upgrade to 6.0 or are they not doing that yet?
http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v6/v6.0.460/details6.0.460.htm What's New: 6.0.460: Increased maximum partition size when imagingThe maximum partition size that can be imaged is increased from 53.3TB to 3413.3 TB. Rescue Media Optional ComponentsThe Rescue Media wizard now has a checkbox for Optional Components. When the checkbox is ticked, the rescue media will include all the required files for BitLocker and iSCSI support. Upgrade InstallationThe upgrade process will now remove any old Version 5 boot menu options and wims. VSS FallbackIf VSS fails with a writer error then it now falls back to creating a shadow copy without writers. This is configurable in the program defaults. Rapid Delta RestoreRapid Delta Restore is now the default restore option in Windows PE. Scheduled backups task editing improvementsTasks can now be edited even if the backup definition xml file cannot be found. v5 Scheduled tasks upgradeEditing tasks created with v5 could result in duplication of tasks. This has been resolved. Home Edition not allowing ReDeployThe ReDeploy option was not available for the Home Edition. This has been resolved. Save empty exclusions in File and Folder FiltersA cleared folder exclusion filter in File and Folder backup would not cause the default value to be clear when next run. This has been resolved
im also running the v6 right now i was just not sure how to get the update to v6 officially if they were doing that yet.
Macrium support document says if the USB drive doesn't have an MBR, you have to run Diskpart, and that ends up reformatting the drive. But the result is incredibly fast.
