I don't want to restrict the bad sites, instead, I want something that will only allow a few sites which I specify for them to be able to connect to and the entire web blocked

can that be done? please advice how

Maybe K9 Web Protection could be used for that, just use custom setup "untick categories", and use the allow sites and blocked sites list.

    Hope this help.

That's the simplest way to do it... you can block adult sites and anything objectionable to kids.

And because K-9 requires a password to configure settings, you can ensure a kid-friendly Internet surfing environment.

Comodo Firewall I think it has domain whitelist/blacklist, so you could block everything and allow only the websites you like.

What you want to do is out of the scope of consumer level gear.

You want an enterprise grade solution to do this. Even Untangle can do it. Untangle can have very basic rules, such as "IF this sites are YES, allow, otherwise block".. That way only the specific sites are accessible, everything else is blocked. The complexity to do advantaged policies is not there with consumer grade gear.

Sounds to me like you want to progress into enterprise level gear for the home. I can't handle consumer level gear myself, I want granular control, I want power. I want to inspect all packets, and know all activity, and provide specific restrictions. So for me, having enterprise grade gear in the home is an absolute must.

In that case, flashing OpenWrt onto a cheap router would give you this control but it requires a steep learning curve though for the initial setup.

If it is for small kids you could use an extention like
    Whitelist for Chrome
    Whitelist Ninja for firefox

    Panagiotis
