Not sure if this is the correct forum: British film pirates who cost Hollywood billions are facing lengthy prison sentences http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/british-film-pirates-who-cost-5074781 Some British views to go with the news: http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/brit...dium=email-link&utm_campaign=deal-alert-email
I never knew how they calculate lost revenue (in this case they're talking about billions). Most of the people that downloaded those movies probably wouldn't go watch them in cinema or buy them. They are just exaggerating to make their point.
There was a report by BPI (britsh music industry) that exagerated lost revenues including some kids whos only income was paper round and they still calculated that they lost £4000 in music sales. So the BPI thinks a kid earns enough to pay for all the £4000 worth of music?! Ridiculous and shows how lacking in credibility media organisations are when they talk about piracy.
Real pirates used to get hanged by the neck. This certainly would act as a deterant imo, always something to think about anyway. Real pirates back in the day didn`t download much as there was no computers but if there was they would mostly download porn. action movies(Die Hard springs to mind)and pirate movies of course. Dont give the British government any ideas, we may end up with a plank being installed in the house of commons.
BPI presumably argues that they would have wheedled the money from their parents. Furthermore, it wasn't piracy unless the kids made copies and sold them.
No, real pirates used to be state-sponsored and celebrated - think Francis Drake. What they hate is the unlicenced operators. Modern-day real pirates are the corporations.
These studies which argue that piracy isn't hurting sales are in the same category with the label lost sales - fairy tales.
I think they preferred the term 'buccaneers' to pirates lol. I think they prefer the term 'monetarist capitalists'.
Much like the head-scrambling transition from terrorist to freedom fighter & lover of democracy, and sometimes back again for the same group/country, over a few years....
Yeah lol, it's all semantics. 'Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What’s in a name?’ ~ Romeo and Juliet, act II, scene II.
Oh yes your quite right I forgot about that but weren`t they called privateers when operating for queen and country and pirates when deemed to be naughty. There was an Irish lady pirate who sailed up the Thames and stated her case to be allowed to purloin the odd ship just to keep the family business going and therefore became a licenced operator. The whole thing about illegal downloads reminds me of the home taping music scandel of the 70s and 80`s not such a big deal now, more of a joke, looking back. Regards Eck
The thing is that this time they really got hit by the piracy. It's like a new version of the boy who cried wolf. This time the boy continued to be stupid, so instead of alerting people that there's a wolf, he said that there are 1000 of them.
