Im having problems with my default isp's dns it blocking sites and making sites not function. Twitch.tv has already confirmed this and they suggest i use. Im wondering how do i know what dns will be fastest and most secure for me? No DNS service is best at everything. You have to decide what your priority is. That priority can be speed, reliability, anti-censorship, or protection from known malicious sites. I chose anti-censorship and use DNS servers from Chaos Computer Club and Open NIC. They're not quite as fast as some but they've been very reliable. Most of the time, the speed difference is only fractions of a second per lookup. The difference is not that noticeable.

Google may be fast, but their business model is monetizing users, their data and their activities. It's a safe bet that they're doing this with their DNS service as well.
So with new web we must choose between speed or privacy? Most people will say dont use chrome but it has best video playback and fastest browser even if you say your tracked all the time same with dns i assume.
It completely depends on what matters most to you. Everything having to do with the internet, computers, etc is a tradeoff. If one browser was superior to all others on every issue, they'd have no competitors. They'd be gone. Some users want nothing to do with Google. Others don't care what they know about their internet usage. Only you can answer that question.
True i guess it all depends but i dont agree with everyone saying them having your information is a bad thing ill give you a clear example. There is a reason google is most popular search it has best results because it knows your interests and stuff you do online which is not a bad thing since its used to give you accurate results. Google search still far better than all others i tried bing, yahoo, duckduckgo and startpage. I guess it more so depends on what there using your information for if there just using it to improve your search and suggestions and things like that i dont see a problem or give your ads that are going to interest you.
@cooperb21 Your example shows that different people have different needs and requirements. When I search for info, I don't want it based on what they perceive as my likes or dislikes. Some might want to see ads tailored to their interests. Others don't want to see ads at all. Most of the time I use ixquick for search. I'll only connect to Google via Tor. As for their ads, analytics, and other junk, I block all of it. The custom address group of my firewall contains every IP address and IP range I'm aware of that Google uses. It's tied to a blocking rule that affects everything on my system except Tor. For me, the priority is not being tracked, data mined, and used for profit. For me, speed is secondary. For me, protection for malicious sites is a non-issue. Trying to keep tract of all of the malicious sites, hacked adservers, etc is an exercise in futility. No ISP or DNS service can possibly keep tract of them all. IMO, ones system has to be able to defend itself. For me, the primary requirements for DNS servers are reliability and results that aren't subject to censorship from governments or big money.
Google's public DNS are fast for sure but as secure (meaning private here)? I don't think so. After all, we are talking about search giant company that makes bulk of it's cash wit ads and possible(?) government dealings. OpenDNS could be better option. For ultra paranoid: Rent your own offshore VPS (note: not USA or UK!!!!) from some no questions asking hosting company (with extra disposable e-mail for contacting them and paying with business PayPal account), setup OpenVPN and your own DNS server (Bind9 is not too difficult to setup) to do your own DNS stuff and to prevent DNS leaks and you are pretty much as private as you can possibly be. Im currently writing this from that kind of setup and everything is working great.
Tried several DNS servers. Fastest DNS servers for me is secondary and I value my privacy. Won't touch Google DNS even if it may be faster. Look for one that meets your needs. If your using other methods to filter web content you may not need to use DNS servers that have that capability. I've used DNS filtering , but sometimes it blocks to much.
