I am having problems burning my Macrium Recovery Disk for the Server Edition. (using Windows Server 2003 R2). I tried to use Windows PE 3.1 option and then came to a choice of either CD/DVD Burner or USB Device. Unfortunately this machine does not have a working burner, so I am getting the following error message: an error occurred creating the Rescue Media. Choosing the other option USB device, I found a USB stick that was accepted and some files were put on this. But this does not work as boot device. Can I use these files to somehow burn a boot disk on a different machine?
Peter, strange that's what I expected but I didn't see where to choose this with respect to the Win PE environment. I then went viathe Linux option as this gave me that option. After going back to Winpe, all of sudden the iso option was there too. hmmmm Gremlins
Well, the main thing is I have now burnt my iso disk and it worked fine. In this context I wonder if you always need to build the rescue disk on the pc or server you intend to rescue. I suppose due to the fact that the imaging program needs to create the windows PE environment and the contents depend on what can be found on the pc, that is the case. However, I wish I could just create the relevant rescue disks for my various imaging programs on one pc, having the latest versions ready for when disaster strikes.
Peter, actually this is what I did today with two recovery disks (Macrium and Image for Windows - two different servers). I had to do this as the two actual servers were in operation and I could not shut them down for this test. However, I am not sure if this proves that everything will work when needed or whether today I was just lucky. As you keep reminding us when the crisis hits, you don't want to get stressed. That's why I was hoping for some more general advice what the limitations of these type of recovery disks are given that the differences between servers, pc, 32-bit, 64 bit, drivers etc can be quite huge. Today's recovery disks e.g. were created on the servers and worked on some spare pc that was not in use. If I had created the recovery disk on my normal workstation (Win 7) would that work on the server? I will try that next week when I go back to that office but for the moment I wonder.
Hi Beethoven I am not above being lucky I wouldn't mix 32bit and 64bit RE's but beyond that you can test them. I guess if you want to feel secure, make a recovery disk for each machine if you can. I've done that in some cases, but in others I don't bother. Only way to be sure is test. Pete
