Avast is coming back! What I think is pretty amazing is that so many of these AV's and suites performed very well. It just shows you how many good choices there are at this point in time. Free or paid the end user has many options and that is a very good thing. :thumb:

AhnLab above Bitdefender in protection? Say whaaa?

    Panda Free still doing well.

    Trend Micro still impressing.

    Vipre seems to be garbage.

Look at that. Norton jumped 3% in one month to 99%/100%.. Also 1s system impact. Very pleased there. Trend's a real player now with 100/100/1s.

ESET, AVG and Avast coming in heavy with 5-6s system impact. GData getting lighter at 3s!

FYI: AhnLab's has some advanced DNA right now, and is migrating their enterprise grade L7 into the Endpoint. AhnLab will be a big player if this keeps up. (IMO) Too heavy right now for my liking, but their appliance is looking very nice.

The rating categories of "Performance" and "Usability" are important.

But to me, the key rating is "Protection."

Two of my recent favorites, Symantec and G-Data did not max out protection. Interesting. Both have done exceptionally well in that category recently.

ZoneAlarm, which is rarely tested was included. I have that one on one system too. I used to like it. The test results further nudge me along in finding a replacement for that one.

The three top finishers in the "Protection" category are Avira, F-Secure & Trend. Strangely, Kaspersky and Bitdefender are not there. Both have dominated that category for years.

AV-Test is a good organization. I'm not going to criticize the test.... like the beholden fanboys and the lame always do..

As always, it will be interesting to watch things going forward. Are we seeing a Trend (pun intended), or is this just an outlier data point.

AV Test is the 'little brother' of AV-Comparatives, and is considered by the security community to be much less respected than AV-Comp. I sometimes look at AV Test's ratings, but only in passing - the most thorough results will be found elsewhere.

test after test, we always see Eset's products when tested being heavy on the system.

With the great engineering at ESET that make on of the few AVs with no quirks, why can't they do something to make the product lighter so it looks good in these tests just like in the old days?

and is Bitdefender really lighter than ESET?

and how in the world is Kaspersky rated lightest with Bitdefender as well? I thought KAV was a big resource hog

Norton jumped from 97% to 99%/100% - note that... Also, this doesn't account for the most powerful features of Norton (Reputation/Insight). Trend is going to be tough to beat from this point, going forward as the DNA system becomes more potent. Back when I said Trend would be top dog within 6 months most people said I was an idiot. Only area I feel Trend needs work is polishing some issues with 2015, and further enhancing PUA/PUP beyond the improvements in that area already.

I prefer Norton at this point because I feel it's a bit stronger with PUA's, but the primary concern is Trend allows one to 'ignore' PUA warnings, and progress.. Without a way to turn that off, Trend becomes less usable for me - as Norton proactively deals with them. That's what I want. I won't bother with Avira and F-Secure anymore for a variety of reasons, so those aren't even in play.. GData - now that's in play.

To my thinking performance is a variable. Eset heavy? Well, for some people it is. I feel it is incredibility light but another user's PC with 4GB's of ram and all the other possibilities can rightly feel Eset is heavy. Some people feel an AV should be heavy. Yes, I have heard that many times before. I have trialed almost every AV or suite out there and performance, while important, will vary depending on the user's hardware, software and configuration of the OS. Also, we all have different ideas of what is heavy or light is. Again, it's an important factor to be sure but my primary focus is on AV-Test's Protection and Usability categories.

Is there a link to the methodology used by AV Test in performance area?

Kudos to Trend Micro, Mayahana was right :argh:

I only bought the Antivirus and not the Internet Security as I feel the Windows Firewall is enough for me + my ASUS RT-AC87U router which Mr. Mayhana configured for me has Trend Micro`s AiProtection built in so it blocks any bad links I may try to visit :)

Thank you Mayhana, you're the best

Good point. Although in fairness, I can see why the testers don't open up the can of worms of tweaking every single tested product.

Norton was tied for 1st in Protection in the previous test. And G-Data was tied for 1st in the two previous tests.

So it is just one data point.

    Yep, he called it.

That may be the case. But before buying any security software you really should test the trial version first to see if you like it. The reason for this is quite simple - the impact an antivirus has on a system varies greatly from computer to computer. I've used antivirus which are supposed to be very light, but have actually slowed down my computer a lot. If you test an antivirus before buying it you can see if slows down your computer or has other issues before you purchase it.

I'm not saying this because you have quite a history or buying antivirus software and then deciding you don't like it. This is the same advice I'd give to anyone.
