Hi, I hope these forums are still active. My problem is that I have noticed that someone has accessed my Gmail account four times. Two of them were blocked by gmail as they were from weird IPs, but the other two were from my own IP with a Mac computer and a Galaxy S4, as detailed by Gmail security history. Of course I don't own those Mac and S4, and I live alone, so I wonder who did this and how. If it was a neighbour hacking my wifi, how did he hack my gmail account and why did he only accessed a couple of times with many days in between? It's all weird. What should I do after changingmy wifi and gmail passwords? Could it be a spy virus in my Android phone or Windows? Thanks
Given the IP, it's almost certainly someone using your wifi. But it need not be a neighbor, just maybe someone driving by. Anyway, working only with a wired connection, make sure that your Gmail account is secured, with a new password, and perhaps cellphone text authorization. It would also be prudent to change credentials for all of your online accounts. How is your wifi secured? I'm no expert, but this looks like a good place to start: http://www.howtogeek.com/204697/wi-fi-security-should-you-use-wpa2-aes-wpa2-tkip-or-both/ Maybe you can figure out what happened from your router logs.
Many thanks. I am no expert, but my wifi is a one year old Vodafone one with WPA2-PSK and AES. If that is what you're asking. I live in a very large appartment in the middle of a big block in a big city and the distance my router reaches doesn't get to the street. So, it definetely has to be a neighbour then. Could it be some virus on my Android or Windows? Should I format every device? I own a windows laptop, android tablet and smartphone plus a chromebook laptop. Thanks a lot.
gwak, Wilders stopped One-on-one Malware Cleaning Services a long time ago. Perhaps a review of If You Are Currently Infected, and seeking dedicated help in any of the listed sites, would be your best bet.
Have you considered Google's two-factor authentication? In the circumstances, that would be far stronger. It's based on "universal two factor" - U2F, which is a developing standard. U2F-only keys are available from about $18 a pop from a prominent online reseller, and based on the Yubico key format. Access to Google accounts is then done from recent versions of Chrome with the U2F plugin and key - and "impossible" for anyone else, even if they have the password. Contingency (for you!) is via smartphone. Previous thread on this is here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thre...on-first-look-with-google-and-yubikey.369913/
Set your router up with a ghetto-VLAN.. I need to post detailed instructions on how to do this - it's remarkable for improving raw security on a home network. Even IF your WiFi is hacked, a ghetto Vlan will protect you. I just need to find the time to type everything up, and then to be able to tell people how to do it for a wide range of router models.
