I have a client that when installing all these updates he now has no icons on the desktop and when you click on them in the start menu they come up asking you Do you want to save this .ink file. I told him to uninstall all the security updates from tues. Would anyone know which one would have wiped out his icons and now no programs will load at all?
He is in the middle of u installing now, i do not know if this would even fix it.....http://www.sevenforums.com/news/358297-january-13th-2015-windows-updates-2.html

I allowed them, and have no problems.

I can't know for certain if this is related to the "important updates" I installed yesterday, but today Windows 7 is not saving my personal settings; for instance every time I boot the computer all of the tray icons are hidden and I have to reset the default browser.

@Victek I highly doubt this is due to Windows updates. It has been my experience over many years, that it is exceptionally rare for Windows updates to ever cause any problems.

It might be worth doing a rollback to before you updated. I wouldn't rule out anything these days. Especially as Microsoft have managed to bork so many recent updates. I honestly don't believe that they are testing them thoroughly enough. Which is most probably why some people are getting problems now.

KB3019215 from Jan Updates showed it was Pending after Config and Restart. So i restarted and Config again. This time it failed on a 80004004 Code. I would like to try to install it again but don't know where to download it from.

    I don't know if i have
Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1
I have Win 7 Home Edition i think it is and not Pro Edition. Not sure if i would want to install this. Would feel better if MS would send me another 9215. Not sure if i really need 9215 and maybe could get by without it.

I've got to agree with Daveski on this.
I think the updates are often "knee-jerk" reactions to the latest batch of security holes that Microsoft
have recently noticed ( or more likely , been TOLD about ).

Having said that , no problems for me with the latest batch , although I often have a mild sense of dread
when they come along and I allow them to install .... " Borkday"

In reply to some earlier posts in this thread :-

I think Windows automatically creates a restore point before installing updates

I also have lost icons after doing updates , but not from Windows , if memory serves , I think it was something from Adobe

    Good call Peter !
I went a step further and skipped IE entirely !
It appears impossible to uninstall it though , the best I could do was disable it within Windows .
The strange thing is , various cleaning tools ( eg PrivaZer ) are still finding recent cookies from IE.

Does anybody know how this is happening ?

PS Sorry to wander "off-topic "

Yeah, a mild sense of dread does describe what I feel as well lol. These days I only install updates that are really important. I don't install IE updates as a rule either. As I never use it, and it isn't even my default browser, I prefer just to leave it rather than risk any borking.

On the Internet Explorer issue , I would REALLY appreciate it if someone on Wilders could tell me how I am still
getting cookies from a browser which I thought I had "disabled " .

Maybe I should start a new thread on this very subject , because many people who might know the answer may not
    be following this thread.

You might look into whether other parts of the system (i.e. Explorer etc) use the IE updates as well. Something tells me that IE is integrated into the system more than one realizes, and that the updates might not just be for the browser portion. I could be wrong, but this sticks in my mind somehow.. I guess you'd need to read up on and study each IE update for details and the update's purpose...

The problem was caused by an update - specifically KB3021674 - and removing it made the problem go away. See here:

    http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/166409-Windows-7-Update-blocking-registry-hive

I was seeing this error in the Application Event Viewer:

"windows cannot load classes registry file. detail - unspecified error"

    Mind boggling...:thumbd:

My thoughts exactly , but try as might , I have not so far pinned down exactly WHAT it is that's doing it.
I guess I could start monitoring all outgoing internet traffic , but hell , life is short !
I was just throwing the idea out there , and hoping that someone had already done the grunt work on this.

Example: Reset Internet Explorer to fix Yahoo Messenger issues.

Yeah, good point. I tend to mull them over a bit on an individual basis, but usually don't update the IE patches. I have noticed that the IE updates are often the most borked.

Yes, these are all too common with Bork Tuesday now. I know many have no problems but I'm fairly convinced MS isn't bothered much about 'legacy' systems (like Win 7 in my case) and have a lapse or sloppy attitude to security update testing.

Supposedly, you can remove IE completely from Win 7. I have no idea how this would affect the rest of the OS though.

    Hi Daveski ,

I've spent a good bit of time looking to completely remove IE from Windows but I've come up with nothing , and as you point out ,
who knows what effect it may have on the rest of the OS if I'd succeeded ?

On a separate point .... I love the term "Borkday " , and also your signature !

I don't seem to have any tray icon or other problems but i just uninstalled KB3021674 anyway. It looks like i could get by without it. After i uninstalled it i got another 1674 right away or it was the same one that was ready to be installed so i put it in hidden updates.

Yeah, it seemed to have been a selling point of Win 7 that you could totally uninstall IE. Microsoft haven't revealed how this is achieved AFAIK. MS regular borkfests seem to be all too common these days. It'd be funnier if it wasn't so serious. I get nervy as 'Bork Tuesday' comes around every month.
