    I figured this would be a 'interesting' list to start, and to reminisce.. I will start it off..

    GIANT Antispyware - Great product, very adept at detecting some tough malware. Good definition update frequency. Microsoft bought them out in 2004, fired everyone, and then updates ceased to be pushed in 2006 when the last subscription ran out.

    Pest Patrol - Launched in 2000, probably the most advanced spyware/adware/cookie defeating product at the time. In 2002 it was named Security Product of the Year.. Remember the big red police light if it found anything? CA Associates bought them out in 2004, and killed the product 3 months later.

    Screenshots of both applications;

    Giant Antispyware, went on to Sunbelt Software[agreement with Microsoft], and became Counterspy, then Vipre. Then Sunbelt sold Vipre AV to another company. I should know, because I was beta tester for Counterspy from the beginning.

    Sweet slim Ad-aware before the full blown slobbering bloated anti virus monster it became.

    Bazooka™ Adware and Spyware Scanner It was abandoned long ago, and the database has not been updated since 2008, but I loved the 1 second scan time.

    ZeroSpyware It was quite a good product in my opinion, but also abandoned long ago.

    Nothing else comes to mind at the moment.

    Since I see you've included AV software:

    ThunderByte Anti Virus I used to use this a lot back in the days of using DOS (long ago). The heurstic cleaning of new viruses was a nice feature, which the DOS based succesor to NOD32, NOD-ICE also had.

    UNA "Ukrainian National Antivirus" An unremarkable antivirus for which development stopped when the head programmed died, if I recall correctly. But I loved their flash based website, which you can see an archive of if you click on the link. I was trying to recall the name of this antivirus recenty, and just a lot of looking at some old AV resources to find the name.

    Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky was one of the best free AV.

    PC Tools Firewall, PC Tools Antivirus and other PC Tools products. Symantec bought PC Tools and then killed the whole PC Tools product line afterwards. Mustards! >=V

    Mayahana,
    You wrote that this would be a fun list.
    With all due respect, I have to disagree with the word "fun" here, and actually that word is greatly irritating me in this context. There is nothing "funny", absolutely zero "funny" about the fact that some programs and/or companies are nomore existing. Companies could have been closed and/or nomore existing because of a lot of reasons. Sometimes we know the reasons, sometimes we don't know the reasons. Reasons (about we may not know) could be private circumstances, could be health issues, could be family circumstances, could be financial circumstances, etc. There is nothing "funny" about those circumstances. If you think there is, then I would advise you to think twice about what you are actually saying. I may be acting here now as the social conscience, so be it.
    I am waiting for your public apologies!

    @FanJ It seems you've missed the intent of Mayhana's post. He never used the word funny, and is using fun in the context of remebering how good some of these discontinued products were, not to be happy that the products are no longer published.

    There is more I could say, but I refrain. The post has been reported; the mods/admins decide.

    How come I forgot to mention about Threatfire/Cyberhawk?!

    Anyway, remember DriveSentry people? Softpedia still has it listed.

    At least I remember a few buzzes regarding SSM and OSSS. Remember that I found this site because I tried to learn CHIPS software, and I guess I still am. ;)

    Yeah, I remember DriveSentry well. It has the little English soldier standing guard.

    Do you remember when ThreatFire was called Cyberhawk? I think that was what it was called before it was sold to PC tools. I used it for a brief period.

    Drive Sentry with it`s trickle down signature updates which disappeared along with the developers as soon as I started using it.:(

    The same era had some great HIPS like SSM and Malware Defender (which frankly scared me at the time and still does).

    Thankfully I got my mits on Spyware Terminator, the happy medium, still using it today.

    Regards Eck:)

    I agree with what a few other users had said, it is never a good thing when companies go out of business, particularly good and hard working companies/software.

    However, I believe that the intent of this thread is more like a 'walk down memory lane" type of idea. A way to pay respect where respect is due and to remember the good times/experiences we may have had.

    I wish that they still offered that. Unfortunately it did not last too long. And it was possible to skin the GUI as well, although not technically intended. I agree, it was one of the best free AV's and also, if I remember correctly, did not install any extra garbage.

    The Drive Sentry spokesperson, for these forums at least, was (supposedly) a lady named "Katie".
    LOTS of banter between forum members and her- at times, not necessarily about Drive Sentry.

    Dead and abandoned applications I remember along with those already mentioned;
    Ewido, Trend-Micro Antispyware, RAV Antivirus (from Romania, bought by Microfoft in the early to mid 90s).
    Webroot Spysweeper, A2 (now Emsisoft), PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Prevx, and all but abandoned for the consumer market antivirus applications from Sophos, Norman, and F-Prot.

    -Regarding the aforementioned Active Virus Shield. A really good free antivirus using the Kaspersky engine and definitions. It was offered free of charge some years ago by AT&T for their internet service subscribers. Although I no longer use AT&T, I wish it was still around.

    -Finally, and old thread which ran at Wilders featured AV screenshots.
