One of my clients sent me an email complaining about various system issues he is having on a newly installed Windows 8.1 Pro.......

    His email:

"This sounds weird, but please bear with me. I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my G75VW a week ago (I had Windows 7 before) and everything was fine and dandy until I noticed something bizarre. After a few restarts, some control panel settings which I have altered change back to their default values. Three settings that do this are Windows Firewall (I turned it off for both private and public networks, but it turns itself on for private networks), Advanced Sharing Settings (I turned off network discovery and file and printer sharing, but both turn themselves on), and the monitor refresh rate (I set it to 67hz, but it goes back to 60hz by itself). What is causing this? I have never seen anything like it."

    Post: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/58836-Windows-8-1-settings-changing-by-themselves

After trying every suggestion the guys over at MDL suggested, nothing worked, the moment he uninstalled Bitdefender Internet Security 2015, his system went back to normal and all his problems disappeared!

People are often misguided by the top scores Bitdefender gets in AV Comparatives and AV-Tests and buy it thinking it's the best, when in reality, it will cause unknown system behavior that people will never even think their security solution is behind all these system quirks they are getting.

He complained to me that his 2 year license is now wasted, I told him that's better than my 5 device / 5 year license being wasted ;)

    Not surprised at all..

From my experience this software is worse than any virus.

Never had any of those issues in over 3 years of using Bitdefender, everybody's system is different so what works on one might not work on others, other security software can also mess with how a AV works.

Did you or your friend try getting in touch with Bitdefender support before slagging off their product?

Bitdefender did not work well for me also. On my system, it was glitchy, and it caused system instability. It sorta seemed like a beta product to me.

I wanted to use that product, but it just was a no-go on my system.

    Too bad.

'Cause Bitdefender does have really good detection rates. And even with the many products that use the Bitdefender engine, most don't match the detection rate of Bitdefender.

Bitdefender does seem to work well for many people -- and they have great protection.

He didn't seek support from them I think because the issue was plaguing his system for too long that the moment he discovered the cause, he quickly uninstalled it.

On a side note, the reason I posted this, was because this was my experience with Bitdefender too, very sour, the AV itself is good, it's these random behaviors that got to me, like always requiring a reboot after a few updates, it adds an entry to my boot loader so when I restored an image of my system the whole system went FUBAR due to the now missing boot loader entry, slow internet while downloading and browsing, are just some of the quirks I faced personally.

Same. I find Bit Defender to be too buggy to be deployed on production systems, and it has caused nothing but issues when I use it. Good database, bad programming. I do however use Bit Defender (Gateway Scanning) on my Untangle UTM, and it is fine there.

Yes many AVs that use the Bitdefender Engine are good like EAM, BullGuard (minus its fugly interface), 360, but they don't carry along the Bitdefender Quirks. What's surprising to me, is how such an old security company, that has always performed outstanding in AV tests for many years, can't get their act straight and give us a bugless product.

Not a BitDefender fan, and have not used it much, but I did buy a license last year and use it for a few months, didn't have any issues.

I have had recent issues and very quirky things happening with BitDefender TS installed. Without BD, everything is fine. BD products are buggy, even the paid stuff. I remember this being the case some 10 years or so ago when I ran BD for a while. Always buggy. I just can't and won't use it any more.. That's it for me... I am glad to hear others' stories as this just re-confirms my suspicions and observations over the years... Goodbye BD...

I have tried Bitdefender and there was this black screen delay and some issues with the sandbox. Stood with it for a while but later on the second month I moved to Avira Free. Some really do have issues with BD including BD support.

During my time using Bitdefender, the biggest problem I can recall is how much it slowed down my computer. Reinstalled it later, and it didn't feel as heavy as before.

please post your feedback after you uninstall it. Also use the Bitdefender Uninstall Tool to ensure you get rid of any of the remnants

I found the long boot delay with a black screen was due to Comodo firewall, for some reason Comodo blocks the Bitdefender AV filter driver from loading which causes the delay & once Comodo was removed the issue no longer happened.

The issue with Bitdefender slowing down Opera (webkit version) & causing it to only load blank tabs was down to Opera, Opera released a update not long before christmas that fixed the issue & Opera now loads very fast & has no issue loading tabs.

The slowdown issue is due to not running a full system scan after installing Bitdefender & then getting the program updates, Bitdefender uses a cache system meaning that it will scan all files until the full system scan is done, once the full scan is done it will only scan new & changed files which doesn't lead to any system slowdown.

The point I'm trying to make is that most of the issues are actually down to other software, Bitdefender is very sensitive to other security software which is why it asks you to remove it before it will even install.

Might this be caused by the one click pc tune up, which should be avaliable with BIS?

At what point do we hold the developer accountable for making their product stable under a wide variety of environments, and a wide array of complementary programs? Opera has had slow tab loading on startup for a long time linked to security products. WSA used to murder Opera's tab load, and spike CPU heavily. I always suspected this was an Opera issue. But it only happens with a few select security products so I never bothered to report it, I don't use those products.

Do the current paid versions of Bitdefender also rely on .NET Framework similar to that of Bitdefender Free version?

It seems that the underlying core of Bitdefender (signature database, engines, AVC, etc) work wonderfully and that the bugs that we most often see are more within the GUI front end. Hopefully they are able to get these random issues sorted out and Bitdefender will be even more impressive.

That’s been my experience over the years which spans back to v6.

Ironically, some licenses of their SDK who develop premium products do Bitdefender better than Bitdefender (while recognizing the low-class flocks wherein the “Bitdefender engine” is marginalized; all marketing and zero fidelity).

That said, the gist of this thread and others like it here and in other forums points largely to issues between the keyboard and seat. :isay:

    Cheers.

The way I see it all software has bugs, some you will see & some you wont even know about, as software gets more & more complicated with more lines of code the problem will only get worse. In my case with the Opera tab loading I was complaining to Bitdefender support through the built in support system, they had me try all kinds of things to try & resolve the issue. In the end it was resolved when Opera released a new version just before christmas. With Bitdefender & Comodo installed I could launch Opera but the tabs were all blank & nothing else would work, after removing Comodo & using Private Firewall Opera would work but was slow at loading tabs. I don't know what the Opera dev's did in the last update but that resolved my issue & Opera went back to opening quickly with no issues loading tabs.

You only need to look at the issues MS has had with monthly updates causing so many issues to see that all software companies can be affected by it, as I have used computers since way back to the ZX Spectrum I try to resolve issues myself before getting in touch with support. I have seen many posts on this forum over the years as a lurker before joining where a user posts with a problem & then starts slagging off the software but wont get in touch with support.

I agree with yourself in that if software keeps causing issues then I stop using it, I have been through many AV's over the years but so far Bitdefender has worked well with me & has never caused any slowdowns after a full system scan has been done. I have always advised folk in the past if you have issues with a program then get in touch with the dev's instead of breaking out the pitchforks & burning torches :)

I am running Bitdefender total Security 2015 on a Win8.1 64 bit system, and it works perfectly.
