Panda free 2015 has been ranked as PC Magazine's editors choice for free av's. Anybody out there tried it and what are your thoughts?

  2. Yes tried it, IMO an excellent free AV available, have put it (since V 2.3) on a dozen infected PC's and never heard of problems anymore. I like the perpentual free license (problems of those friends were caused by in-active AV's*). Just de-select the panda news and promotions and it is a great AV for the average (sometimes ignorant) PC user.

    * e.g. for Avast one has to renew the free license every year (at least in the past), for some users this is to difficult (I know Avast prompts warnings, but reading a prompt is also to difficult for some users).

The product itself is good IMO. It's just the prompt asking for an account registration that I find to be offensive.

I have been using it and it's been great, except for a couple of FPs. Fwiw, in General Settings I turned-off Alerts & Reports as well as News (or something like that). Since then I haven't seen any pop-up/prompt to register!

It is super easy to register, and every other PC you install it on you can simply type the same email and password and you are done in a few seconds, no more nags.

I encourage you to look up the test results for free AVs. There are several out there. Google is your buddy and pal.

The results are pretty clear on what the best free AVs are.

    And they are not Panda.

ufakai75, you're welcome. Keep in mind that those reviews and reports are just guidelines. You should test the products in your own PC. What works in someone else's PC, might not work on yours.

There are a few others, ufakai75:

    AV-Test
    http://www.av-test.org/en/

    Virus Bulletin
    https://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/index

AV-C is my personal favorite, though.

I wouldn't shy away from Panda. It is excellent protection and very automatic, I use it for quite a few customers. I do prefer other free options, which I won't name, but you could easily guess. They rank highly on all the tests, you can do the research yourself.

I've also disabled it, and it still asked for account registration.

It doesn't matter, I don't like the registration part to begin with. I'm fine with a big banner ad at the bottom of the GUI, but asking for account registration is just too much IMO.
