A week ago I posted in reply on a YouTube video to someone who was having serious problems with his new ROG:"Sorry to hear of your issues with your new ROG, but you are not alone. You are one of the unlucky ones. There are several reports all over the net in various forums and customer reviews of ASUS ROG Nvidia Card problems and failures, particularly the GTX 760."

Well, despite those reports I bought one. Installed the latest Nvidia driver and guess what? My GTX 760 is dead on arrival. I can only use my ROG with the onboard Intel GPU which is useless for gaming.

I have installed the latest Nvidia driver and the GTX 760 shows in my Device Manager with the Nvidia Driver installed and reportedly "working"

DOES ASUS TEST THESE MACHINES BEFORE THEY SHIP THEMo_Oo_O

I'd install a replacement card myself, but that would void what is apparently a much needed ASUS Warranty. If you open the case for any reason, even just to blow dust off the fans, that will void your ASUS Warranty.

Is there some setting in Windows 8.1 that needs to be changed that can fix this?

Shame on me for ignoring the GTX 760 issues reported. I assumed they were just unlucky peeps. I am now a member of the unlucky group." :-(

I have used numerous Asus gaming rigs and have never had an issue. I have also never heard of opening the bottom of a laptop to clean air out voiding the warranty. You can always upgrade RAM in a laptop without voiding warranty provided its not an ultra book with soldered RAM sticks.

Why not call Asus and warranty it? From my experiences their warranty process is pretty painless.

    Hi :)

It's a PC Desk Top. The website and official ASUS videos makes it VERY clear that if you open the case the ASUS Warranty is voided. It's one on the major complaints about the ROG gaming series. A Gaming Rig you can't open without voiding the warranty. The ROG GR20 i's an extremely compact PC and extremely tightly packed with an unusual component layout, that's probably why.

I have spent over an hour with on line ASUS Support and Nvidia Support. It is abundantly clear that my GTX Card is a total fail and the PC has to be returned.

As I said, I read several posts on various forums of peeps reporting the exact same thing.

Of course ASUS will honor it's warranty and repair it, but that would mean being without a working PC for who knows how long. Best Buy has an extended return policy during Christmas till 1/15/15 but they have no others in stock to replace it with and because of my handicap which severely limits my mobility, I don't know when I will be well enough to to make the trip to return it for replacement. They can sometimes be unjust on returns and refunds.

A couple of years ago I bought a defective monitor there. It was a respected brand name and the only colors it would display were black and green. They refused to refund or exchange it. Evidently I had coughed while using it and a tiny fluid droplet that I never noticed remained on the screen. They said they therefore would do nothing about it because the single tiny drop of water on the screen raised the possibility that I had damaged it with water. Yeah Right LMAO.

I had a fairly popular thread on the nvidia forums about a series of 480 cards that were failing on people. It does happen. Bad batches or design/heat issues, all hardware has 'em.

I do buy into the theory that because of the eco laws now, they use cheap lead-free solder which causes electronics to fail. Not always, but I think it is a factor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solder#Lead-free_solder

No-no SSD. One of the ROG Models that Best Buy carries has a small SSD and they refer to it's 1TB hard drive as a "Hybrid SSD Drive" or something like that. I have not seen any on the market anywhere with one pre-configured with an SSD. The Spec. Sheet on the ASUS ROG website lists an SSD as being available, but I assume you have to special order one.

The good news for me is that, contrary to what I was told by ASUS Online Support, Best Buy will replace a defective ASUS if you return it within 30 days. The bad news is that they have none in stock and none on order, but other stores in my State of Virginia do and they are going to try to have one shipped to the store near me. I'm willing to try another, There are 9 reviews of my Model on my local store's website. Out of the nine only one other reported a dead-on-arrival machine, and the 7 others are happy with theirs.

It should be a pretty awesome machine with a working GTX760. There is an on-board Intel motherboard GPU that you can connect to directly trough it's own HDMI port. I am actually able to play some not overly graphic intensive games, such as Diablo 3, at decent quality settings with it. I was surprised at this.

I do not know what ASUS's problem is with Quality Control. I discovered another defect last night. The sound output jacks do not work. I can only hear stuff by using my Logitech G930 headphones which by pass the sound card and connect through a USB Port.

I don't know if I mentioned this earlier but I had a funny experience with ASUS Online Support yesterday-my second of the day after all the suggestions made during my first session failed.

I asked if ASUS tested every machine before it was shipped and the ASUS Support Rep said yes. I then asked him, then "How can you account for my dead on arrival GTX 760 which appears to be an issue reported by several posters on various forums on the net. He had no answer. The following is how the session ended:

"[Name of ASUS Rep removed by me]: I see that you are typing but nothing comes through [my name]. I haven't heard from you in a few minutes. I will need to close this chat window due to inactivity. Please feel free to contact us again.

You: That's a good way to avoid an unpleasant topic."

I had been typing a lot and sending immediately prior to the above.

I thuoght that was hilarious, but the joke was on me :) LOL

The joke is on everyone who buys a branded desktop.
Even if you need/want a very small enclosure there's an array of choice: tower, mobo, customized GPUs...
It's not difficult to search for the parts, compatibility, etc. Plenty of sites, forums, tutorials, videos.
And you can tell the shop to build it, and you can freely upgrade afterwards, and if one part is defective you only send that part to warranty, and you install a clean OS without all the crapware, and you configure the fans rpms, and... etc.

after owning 4 ASUS laptops...I would never buy an ASUS laptop again...but if you had to choose between the above 2 the JZ no question

Never had an Alienware before because of its high price. I had 3 ASUS Gaming laptops, G73Sw, G75VW, and G750JX

After being frustrated with ASUS's bad driver support, and lack of official drivers for Windows 7, I sold my G750JX and got this Alienware.

Now I know why they cost an arm and a leg

    1) much better build quality, it's like you bought a Mercedes as opposed to a honda civic

    2) Warranty is much better, if the laptop spoils, they will come to your house and fix it at your home the next business day. When my G750JX stopped booting within 6 months of owning it, I had to drive to the service center which is very far, and it took them 7 days to replace the motherboard

    3) I wanted a bigger screen and ASUS only have 17.3' screens. This 18.4' screen is a dream to play and surf on

    4) I didn't ask for it, but I got a freebie dual GeForce GTX 770M so my performance has never been better

    5) I love the lighting effects of Alienware

    6) Their audio and KLIPSCH speakers blow the ASUS G750JX out of the water in terms of loudness and quality although both use a Realtek Chipset, but the speakers are better and the Alienware comes with the Dolby Home Theater which improves the audio quality by a great mile

    7) All ASUS laptops has a problem with the left USB 3.0 Ports. You plug in a USB 3.0 HDD to the left top or left bottom ports and it will randomly keep disconnecting. That is for all G750 series, JX,JW,JH,JZ,JavaScript, you name it. don't believe me, just hang around on the ROG forums and see the jokes of problems they have. pathetic for the amount of money you pay. problems with screens,m auto dimming problem, contrast problem.

I wouldn't use an ASUS laptop anymore even if they gave it to me for free! cheap Taiwanese crap!

    Did I forget to mention...

their implementation of Optimus is messed up...it is very tricky to force games to use your nVIDIA GPU unless you do a lot of settings and even then users on their forums complain that the freakin' games are using the Intel HD Graphics! LOL! horrible!

with Alienware, there are no such mishaps...you press FN + F5 and the laptop reboots activating the nVIDIA GPUs and it's stuck like that until you press FN + F5. no room for error of a gaming even seeing your Intel HD Graphics!

you want Testimony ? Please take the time to read this:

why ASUS? because people who buy ASUS cannot afford Alienware, no other reason on earth...that's a fact...I am one of them...

    First laptop, 2 years ago..

    G73Sw:

bought it and ran home like a little child wanting to see my lights in the chiclet keyboards....ooops...no lights...tried all driver updates..BIOS update...nope..

Called ASUS, they told me to bring it to the service center it's an easy fix!! whaaaat?? I buy a 2000 USD laptop and go to the service center next day? oh well..I did and they activated it with their BIOS tweak utility that they don't give to customers! great quality control Taiwanese Engineers! send out laptops for sale that don't work properly as advertised...

after 1 week...the screen started giving me fuzzy images...closing/opening the screen lid fixed the problem....wow!! what did I buy? a 1990 Toyotal Corolla or a brand new gaming laptop??

They said they need to replace my screen! wow!! the laptop can't last a week without being repaired! i fought for a refund and got it after a long hassle...

    next laptop...

    ASUS G75VW,

ASUS decided to remove their awesome creative sound blaster audio chipset and put some cheap VIA audio chipset which made the subwoofer act like a center speaker rather than a subwoofer..

also..I only had the option to get the matte screen...oh well...people say matte is good...right? NOPE! not on ASUS! the ASUS matte screens look as if someone spilled grease all over them. very grainy image especially if you look at a white screen such as these forums or Google..if you look close..you can see the pixels of colorful rainbows! again shocked in awe for this cheap crap!

So I called ASUS complaining about the quality of the screen, they offered to change it to the 3D screen not coz I want 3D, but only because that is the only screen they have that is Glossy..

took the laptop...2 days..I get a call...sorry sir, we changed your screen, but fried your motherboard....we have no spare motherboards...so if you pay $500 USD we can give you a G750JX instead or you can wait till god knows when till we get a motherboard from Taiwan...

    so I got the G750JX...

very bad driver support....ASUS released the win 8.1 drivers after 6 months of win 8.1 was released...anyone who upgraded while having the old drivers either got a non booting laptop after the upgrade due to outdated bluetooth/wifi drivers or had horrible problems....

next comes the 2D performance of their GTX770M....there is something not right about it! 3D was fine and performed as it should...but 2D was glitchy and choppy...imagine even a simple game of solitaire..the motion of the cards wasn't fluid...I used to get jealouse when I see my friends' Intel HD Graphics perform so smoothly in the Windows environment while my brand new gaming laptop cries in 2D...opening tabs in firefox...wow..another plethora of jerkiness / slow motion

next...they put cheap Atheros WLAN chipsets which cannot connect above 72 MBPS!! wow! had to pay 50 USD and get a Bigfoot Wireless N-Killer from the US and pay customs just to have a laptop perform like a normal computer

    next.... USB 3.0 problems..

basically, I had to connect my USB drives to the right ports and the left ones were kept for my mouse and printer? why? because ASUS cannot produce a piece of hardware that functions right! they claim all ports are USB 3.0 and they are all in blue color...BIG LIE! it wasn't only me, I posted this on the ROG forums and every single one of the members verified the same!

I can't find my thread that I started, but here are 2 examples I quickly grabbed:

Asus G750 USB 3.0 Ports not working with some things

    and

Is it normal that the top left USB port is very slow?

    ASUS? HELLL NO!!

Worst case scenario, save some money and wait, then get a real gaming laptop from Alienware and be happy for life! rather than bite your fingers after you buy your ASUS

A quick Google search on the G750JX presents exactly what I experienced! I've probably formatted that laptop over 200 times twice daily just trying to make it work but every time some quirk happens...

I used to be a huge fan of ASUS, but not so much these days. My friends G53SX ROG laptop has a serious design defect whereby sometimes the laptop does not recognise that the lid is open and because of this won't power on. This is a very common fault for that model sadly. Also it has some weird USB issues. The USB 3.0 port will only work with the driver supplied by ASUS. Updating to a more recent version of the driver, or letting Windows choose a driver for it stops the port from working until the driver is replaced with the ASUS one.

Also I have come across issues with some other ASUS laptops and ultrabooks in the last year. My next phone may be an ASUS one, but for now I'll stick with Lenovo laptops.

    Hi Joxx:)

Thanks for your suggestion. But because I am partially handicapped which seriously affects my mobility I can't be without one for a day. I need to to order grocery deliveries and other necessities, and pay bills. That's a reason I also didn't want to have one shipped, in the event it had to be returned. Sadly, on a good day the only store I can physically get to is a Best Buy. The ROG is the only PC that they sell that is suitable for gaming. It's been several years since they sold gaming rigs in their stores after they shifted to an online emphasis to compete with the others. The last gaming rig they sold in store was about 5 years ago. A Gateway F/X, in essence an ACER Predator in disguise. It was after ACER bought Gateway. It was a good machine and lasted several years of heavy use.

They do have an extensive assortment of gaming rigs you can buy online and have them shipped to the store, which might be a good option since I have not heard back from Best Buy trying to locate a replacement for me. Because of an extended time period for returns and refunds because of the holiday season, I have until the 15th to return it for a refund. I have until January 23, to return it for a replacement.

I have heard of those problems. Someone who did not buy a ROG posted a in the Rog Reviews Section of Best Buy warning peeps not to buy an ASUS, reporting issues he had with an ASUS laptop that was a total fail after a few months. (To post a review you don't have to have actually bought the machine. Just signing-up for an online account allows you to post a review, but you are not marked as a verified purchaser). He posted his review for another ROG BB sells soo I didn't notice it before.

I hear you, but my purchasing options are limited.

Now ASUS warns you you can only use it's USB 2 Ports for keyboard and mouse.

Most every driver on their support site is long out of date.

I discovered last night that their sound system is seriously flawed.

They make a big deal about about their new Sonic Master sound system. What is that. It's a Realtek Sound Card and an ASUS enhanced sound app. Problem is that The ASUS enhancer only works on "Stereo", but the Realtek Sound Card's ports don't support Stereo. Or 2.1. I upgraded my old PC with a Creative X-FI HD Titanium Card and used it with a number of different 2.1 systems. It's a great system.

I have yet to figure out how to use the Realteck Outputs with a 2.1 system (aside from the fact that they use earphone style jacks/miniplugs rather than RCA jacks.) I have two pairs of stereo speakers that have a plugs that fit. I have yet to figure out how to get sound from two speakers unless the sound output is a reverbed rear speaker output with Realtek set at 7.1. ATM I need to use my Logitech G930 headset that by-passes the Realteck Card and uses a USB Port.

I'm in a dilemma since my purchasing options are limited, but the quality standards of ROG GR20s suck and it's sound system was designed by a moron.

Oh, and the only way to access the BIOS is through the GTX 760, which mine was dead on arrival. The only "comfort" my ROG gives me is that,at least for now, it allows me to perform my necessary tasks.

The G73Sw was the best sounding laptop I ever bought. Sad thing the laptop didn't last 2 weeks without problems so I returned it. It had creative subwoofer built in which gave you real bass never before heard on a laptop. Then the next models....the bass became worse and worse..... The G75VW I had was equipped with a VIA Sound Chip! bass was a joke and their SoundMax app did nothing other than distort the sound if I upped the bass levels.

Then the G750JX, again, decent sound for a laptop, but no bass.

Even my Alienware 18 with its Klipsch speakers / subwoofer (also a Realtek Sound Chipset) has poor bass, If I turned on their Dolby Digital Sound Effects, sound becomes richer and louder but Bass disappers totally. If I turned the Dolby Effects off, I hear proper rich bass, but then the sound becomes as if you're listening whilst your laptop is locked in a basement, very low but with bass. I gave up on the search for good sound on a laptop.

Literally the only difference between an Alienware and other PC's is the fancy case. They use the same manufacturers, brands, etc. for GPU's, CPU's, HD's, as every other PC builder out there.

I don't know where you bought this machine, at my local PC store, they run a 24-h burn in on newly assembled desktops.
Maybe because they are shipped this way from the manufacturer, they cannot be tested without being considered sold?

Bought it at a Best Buy. I never heard of them testing PC's built by an independent maker. They have gotten me a replacement that I will be picking up later in the week. Probably should just ask for a refund, but I'm gonna give this one a second shot.

As to the first, it was a case of bad luck. I tend not to be a lucky person. At one time I had been an active day trader in S&P options. I made and lost three fortunes (Typical day trader experience - You know:Bulls, Bears , and Pigs :). I then became extremely conservative with my savings. I didn't even trust Money Market Funds. I had a regular savings account (at that time banks were actually paying interest). There must be over ten thousand stocks traded on the the various markets - NYSE, NASDQ, NASDQ Bulletin Board. Each year the SEC suspends trading in about ten stocks because of suspected fraud. For some reason I decided to take a risk on a stock. The stock I "invested" in was one of those ten out of ten thousand stocks that the SEC suspends trading in. My investment went to zero over night with no opportunity to get out. You can't imagine what that feels like. A bum PC is small potatoes compared to my stock investing experience.

    Literally.....NO

    - ASUS uses soldered CPUs to the motherboard (HQ Series) whilst Alienware uses the MQ series meaning it's not soldered to the motherboard and thus, is upgradeable in the future if one wants to

    - ASUS doesn't have Dual GPU options (SLI or Crossfire)

    - ASUS uses cheap crap like Matshita DVD/BluRay Drives

    - Unless you opted for a higher config ASUS, they usually put the worst Atheros WLAN chipsets that aren't even able to see 5GHz Networks when even cheap ACER laptops these days have a WLAN Card that can see both 2.4GHz and 5GHz

    - With ASUS, I spend my time formatting all the time to get things to work, with Alienware, I buy it, format once, and enjoy it

    - I've never had an ASUS laptop that lasted more than 3 months without a problem (ie. sudden death of the motherboard which leads to no boot, screen with fuzzy lines, etc.)

    - ASUS warranty is crap compared to DELL, utter CRAP, if my laptop died, they would take a minimum of 7 working days to repair it and I have to drop it to the service center, with DELL, I just call them, and they send a technician to my house next business day with the required parts to replace it at the luxury of my house

You get what you pay for, ASUS is for people who cannot afford a proper gaming laptop and want Taiwanese junk ;)

nothing bad in that bro, meant no offense as well. I was also like you, hence why I owned 4 ASUS gaming laptops before I finally had to borrow money from here and there to get this Alienware

OK, I see. I think it's weird that they don't offer SSD as a standard feature, you would expect this from a high end machine.
LOL, I've been trading the markets for 10 years now, and I know what you mean, I've lost quite some money, but luckily I have made even more. I think I've made about 4000 euro per year, not that much, but still better than what you get from bank account savings with their crappy interest rates. But I only trade in stocks, options and futures are too risky.

No offense taken :) I understand what you were saying and agree. I have never spent more than $1,200 for a pc. I have no need for a laptop.

Though i think perhaps this purchase was a mistake.

LOL. That's what I thought. I had no idea that a company registered with and making regular filings with the SEC would make such brazen lies. More importantly. they apparently believed they could get away with it :) If you have the time some day read the Court's Opinion. It's good schooling.

    http://www.leagle.com/decision/2003653274FSupp2d379_1622.xml/S.E.C. v. SOLUCORP INDUSTRIES, LTD.

    "X. Summary Finding

Over a number of years, Solucorp and its executives engaged in a course of deception through the issuance of false and misleading press releases and financial statements in which, in a number of cases, they reported that the Company had entered into contracts that did not exist, in one case backdated a contract to increase the accrued revenue recognizable thereunder, and in many other cases reported that the minimum revenues to be derived from such contracts far exceeded the actual minimums. This pattern of deception was so consistent and pervasive that it cannot logically be attributed to mere negligence. The Court therefore finds that the executives responsible for the issuance of these press releases and financial statements, specifically Kemprowski, Mantia and Herman, knowingly and deliberately falsified them with the intention of deceiving shareholders and potential investors or, at the very least, were guilty of reckless disregard for the truth or falsity of the disclosures."

    1. Who cares. An upgradeable CPU for a laptop runs $300+ for even a crappy one. You arent going to spend that. Its cheaper to buy a new PC with a warranty and newer technology.
    2. Didnt say they did. I said they use the same parts as every other manufacturer. SLI/crossfire is idiotic in a laptop anyway. 30% performance markup, double the heat. Heat is the number 1 cause for failure. Good luck!
    3. No they dont. I have one sitting in my closet thats 6 years old and its an LG.
    4. Atheros > Intel's crappy drivers and Intels crappy ProSet software that is buggy as all h3ll
    5. Ive had 4 of them all 6+ years old. Whats your point?
    6. Asus warranty was 3 years + 1 year accidental damage that covered drops, spills, electrical surges, freak accidents. Nobody offers accidental damage or surge protection warranties.

Again 4 laptops all 6+ years old never needed the warranty.

Its a common fact that Alienware's are identical hardware to other similar spec'd laptops with a fancy case and a $1000+ mark up because of it.
