On a Windows 7 computer, I am attempting to copy a partition to a brand new Western Digital external hard driver. I have attempted this copy partition action twice now, and it has failed both times with the cryptic error: Bad parameter of function (source: Hard Disk Manager).

I have looked at other posts but haven't found anything there to help me. I am stumped.

I am not an IT guy, but just someone trying to back up several TBs of data. I have zero ideas how to actually address this problem. I don't even know what the problem is.

    Help would be appreciated.

    regards,

    Stefan

It's quite possible there are errors on the source drive. In which case, you will be able to copy the partition with EaseUS Disk Copy. The setup file creates a bootable flash drive or DVD containing Disk Copy. Disk Copy gives you the option to continue the copy when it comes across an error, and there is also a silent mode which makes it automtically ignore all errors and continue with the copy.

Most software which copies disks or partitions can't continue when there is an error.

    Thanks Roger,

I think will try EaseUS Disk Copy. Thanks for the information and suggestion. Much appreciated.
I will contact EaseUS pre-sales, ask a few questions about this, and if it looks good, buy their product.

    Again, much thanks!

    regards,

    Stefan

PS - It does really surprise me that a product as highly evaluated as Paragon Hard Disk Manager fails in such a completely useless manner.
If it failed because of a bad sector on the source drive, the software should say so. Instead, it just provides this completely useless error message. Although I can't laugh much about this, I think they could at least provide some humor by altering their error message. Perhaps the error message should be "You are $%#!@ but we aren't going to tell what the problem is. Good luck. Auf wiederzehen."

@sfgower glad I could be of help.

What you experienced with Partition Manager is fairly common sadly, which is why the EaseUS product is so good.

You are supposing that there are errors in the disk, but don´t have any evidence that this is the problem. I would run chkdsk in the disk and also check its SMART parameters.

EASEUS is not the only program that presents options to the user when it encounters problems in the disk.

If you are copying data, a copy with errors may be useful as a means to back up the data and prevent further losses. But if you are copying system partitions, the copy is useless.

This is simply not true. I've cloned faulty hard drives on systems which wouldn't even boot and cloned drive booted and everything worked fine.

I had a case just recently where the cloned drive wouldn't boot, which meant I had to do a clean install of Windows on the new drive. After which I tranferred all the user's apps and data across to the new drive with Laplink Image Assistant so they had all their old apps back. But this was a rare case.
