Ended? Far from it. The competition still exist...it's just quieter compared to the older days. I'm guessing that's because for the most part, browsers nowadays are quite decent and pretty much usable for most end-users in terms of providing basic browsing needs.

Hopefully true, we will all benefit, no matter what browser we use, from the competition.

(But Mozilla now asking for donations?!?!?! :'( )

The war ended on my system years ago. Opera 12 and the latest Firefox are still standing. But it's obvious that most people don't care about what browser they are using otherwise crappy Chrome wouldn't be that "popular". IE 12 might make a come back when they add support for extensions, of course not on my PC.

  8. Maybe you can put your money where your mouth is and help out FF by donating three bucks to your beloved browser. :isay:

I will stick with the crappy ones which have low rights sandboxes. :argh:

Chrome works great for me.. Speed Dial extension, Adguard, some privacy based ones. A few tweaks like disabling asynchronous dns within the browser and I never have to worry about it crashing, slowing down, or not loading pages properly. How is that crappy? Seems to me there is a reason the browser wars are over, and chrome won. It just works.

Agree. Use Chrome and Google and your privacy is gone. Forever. And I wish to see some new browser with a nice GUI.

Newsflash: Your privacy has already left.. Regardless of the browser.

Now that we've established privacy is in the wind, we focus on a solution. The solution is largely to 'guard' your sensitive stuff (encrypted), and not sweat so much about the non-sensitive stuff. That is, your browsing to Dominoes Pizza to order a takeout vs your family photos, passwords, or business documents. Browsers have little to do with this at this point.

Actually, I don't even like Firefox, but I use it for sites that perform badly on Opera 12. Opera is the least attacked browser, plus with protection from Sandboxie it doesn't need its own sandboxing mechanism.

Can you put tabs on bottom? Also, it seems like IE is still the most used browser.

It's not ended. It's just that people are already bored discussing the same war over and over again.

I would bet that part of that success is due to gorhill's masterpieces. ;)

Yes, but Chrome is different: it's so integrated with Google search engines and with all Google's world.

Once Firefox has implemented Chrome's open source sandboxing I will move back to it.

    A great read.

It may be a little less hostile but it only takes an exploit or a large security flaw in any browser and it will cause people to switch. Or at least the user who has a care or is aware in such importance.

I do honestly feel though that the majority of users such as Chrome or IE have just had it rammed down their throat. I feel other browsers like FireFox, CM browser etc have done amazing to maintain their users considering how aggressive others have been on forcing them on people.

Mobile has changed the market, with Android being Google's means of Chrome default. Though in a performance sense, Google still holds the http://peacekeeper.futuremark.com/ score.

I just use what works with the fewest issues, and least incompatibilities. Norton 2015 won't work with Opera, so I can't use Opera without dramatically lowering security. Firefox always gives me 'some' issue or another. When I deploy something it has to generally offer those things, and so far Chrome offers them consistently.. Perhaps when Spartan comes out I will switch to that provided the extensions come out that I need.

Why is it that most programs I try to install want to force Chrome down my throat?

Nero Platinum Suite 2015, after running the first update, wants me to install Chrome as a System Pre-requestie. Then SUPERAntiSpyware started pushing Chrome down to users' throats about 1.5 years ago despite many complaints on their forum that a security product shouldn't bundle anything else.

Nothing against Chrome, it's fast as heck, I just can never get used to its interface, and the fact that when I click on a torrent link or magnet link the torrent client doesn't open automatically but the torrent file is downloaded separately into the Downloads folder. then there is another issue for me, the WYSIWYG editor only works in vBulletin 4 and above forums, but many of the forums that I visit are still on vBulletin 3, so what does is when I copy paste a post from another site, it just pastes it as plain text leaving out the formatting. images, links, etc.

Also Chrome looks weird if you have a DPI scaling of 125% like I do on my 18.4 inch screen, the icons on the bookmarks toolbar would be very small as if there was no DPI scaling yet the webpages look bigger just as I want, so it looks weird, top bookmarks bar is tiny and the webpage is huge in comparison.

Chrome is just not for me, although I know it's faster and always wonder how in the world anyone can seriously use that browser.

PS: I couldn't care less if Google wants to track my search results and what not, privacy isn't the reason I don't use Chrome, it's functionality.

18.4 inch screen? What is that? For the vast majority of regular uses, Chrome works, and doesn't break anything. I think that's why it's popular. Folks like my Wife, Kids, and clients, all want stuff that 'works' without any input, so Chrome is the top dog. We install Chrome on every machine we touch as an MSP, even if the client uses IE. The reason is sometimes when IE gets compromised, Chrome will still load. But also we feel Chrome w/uBlock(or whatever) offers a bit better security, and encourage customers to use it. Installing Opera, or Firefox on production machines, in a business environment isn't recommended, and never passed our vetting.

I find Chrome can often break pages. Its extensions can be problematical as well, in fact I only use three extensions on Chrome/Chromium now. On Windows and Android Maxthon is a better alternative to Chrome IMO. It utilises the same rendering engine anyway and doesn't appear to break pages. Your mileage may vary however. ;)

18.4 screen is my laptop's screen bro. it's an Alienware 18 , meaning it has an 18.4 inch screen with a 1920.x1080 native resolution so things are very tiny if you don't up the DPI scaling to at least 125%

What pages do you find Chrome breaking? Just curious. I have about 25 extensions though I only run maybe 15 of them regularly (most of them are security and performance related) and toggle others only when they are needed like LastPass. HTTPS Everywhere breaks some pages but they have the option of disabling it partially. Fix Url Links Redirect is one that can really mess things up.

I think the biggest problem with Chrome is the dependency on Google which is nearly impossible to get away from. I've tried and given up.

I can remember some Firefox extensions that would break the browser never mind webpages. Now FF shows when they haven't fully tested for extension compatibility.

how do people who use chrome download torrent files? it's very impractical to have them downloaded to your downloads folder then having to double click them manually. In Firefox the moment you click a torrent or magnet link, it opens up your torrent client
