I definitely appreciated your thorough and detailed run down of internal components and file version comparisons. I still choose BD Free to install on client machines over the past 1-2 years and have had no users get infected thus far. And it has been a great set-it-and-forget-it AV for those users who wouldn't understand the choices to make if they had been given that kind of control. It has renewed my confidence that you have confirmed component file versions. Thank you.

Yeah totally agree, great "set and forget" but I just wonder about it`s self-protection capabilities ?

    Regards Eck:)

    @ WildByDesign & Eck

It's more "install and forget " than "set and forget." :D

Yes. That's their biggest "selling point" and a highly desired feature for many. Thanks for bringing it up as it didn't occur to me given the nature of this forum.

I didn't re-read all the 120+ pages here, but my recollection is of reports where system files or new files during an install were false positive'd and removed without no restore capability. Based on your 1-2 years of real hands-on, I may have overstated the danger. Thanks.

While I didn't think it needed mention in an analyses of the "gears and motors" side of things, there are the bdrescue and fallback components along with redundant directories of libraries, drivers, etc. and signatures (AV and AVC). I'm not sure if this would figure into a self-protection scheme. I think BD eliminated the option to toggle off self-protection in their paid products a while back - could be it's at work in Free, too. Anyone in the know about this, chime in please.

    Cheers.

I stand corrected, your quite right as there`s feck all to set....LOL as they say.

As for self protection it`s more of a niggle from sometime ago that has`nt been raised since.

    Regards Eck:)

bd free removes existing av's during it's installation, except for panda 2015...wonder if this to panda being a cloud av. bd free allows both to run together without slowing the system...any thoughts?

    And yourself ufakai.;)

That would be a pretty powerful combo BDF and Panda , just wondering which web filter would have to switched off if any ?Might be a system related quirk ?

Anyway happy new year to one and all.:D

    Regards Eck:)

Eck, you might remember "Moses" from another site.Howdy! AS for web filter...didn't find one either av, so turned off panda's real time protection to use as on demand scanner to avoid confict of running together. Still have bd free as real time av...realizing it isn't as good as paid av's...but suites my pc's security needs...good phishing rate and excellent blocking with self protection zero attack...good for some, not for others! Happy new year and be safe!

Howdy doo again Moses short time no see. I never did get to use that phrase as I forgot to write it down.:rolleyes:LOL

Good choice in having BDF as the real time protection and Panda`s been doing very good in a lot of tests over the past year so you should be sitting very secure.

    Best Regards Eck:)

By the above bold, do you mean Bd free is not as good as Bd paid?
I think the protection is same. And I am running Bd free on 2 Win 7 64 systems with no probs.
I found an official Bd page showing Bd free & paid comparison. Below is the link----

I thought the forums are dead since 2013. :D Sometimes I remember my Bitdefender Free experiences. Crashed systems, dead buttons, not restoreable files ... not nice at all.

Impet...I think protection is the same except that photon protection is in paid version only. Personally I think bd free is great and have been virus/problem free over a year and will continue to use bd free. Thanks for the link!

I think it's a known issue and the main reason why I don't use it any more.

PHOTON in paid version is not protection, its a technology to cut down scan & save resources, some kind of whitelisting for scan I guess.

    No infection/fps here yet.

But I tried harmless sample that Bd free detects & quarantine. Bd free restored it successfully.

By the way, I think they do update Bd free i.e product update.
In this month, 2 times I got Bd free product updated, a restart is required. May be fixes, improvements or whatever.
    Do you got those notification?

have been able to restore most of quarantined items, except for identified adware...then bd free quarantines it with no option to restore.

My edit timed out for post #3075 here and while I still haven't verified if this HIPS component is for that IDS, BD Free has bdfwfpf.dll which is BD's firewall driver for WFP (Windows Filtering Platform) and responsible for TCP/IP packet filtering. Also found is bdftdif.sys, another transport protocol stacks filter driver; that's not running "on my system," but perhaps is used instead by other versions of the OS. fwlibrary.dll (fw = firewall?) might be unique to BD Free in that no other BD firewall components are provided.

As with AVC, the WFP driver is absent from all the other "It's got the Bitdefender engine!" freebies I'm familiar with, making BD Free IMHO the sovereign product in this class.

Over here "on my system" (I so enjoy quoting one of most popular phrases on Wilders) BD Free continues to plug along without issue and signature updates occur reliably so much so they are never outdated. Well, so far...

    Cheers.

I allways go back to this, even have the paid version but find this free the most trouble free solution i have found. I go round all the others to try them but i dont know how others cope with them. This is great free protection that is light and runs simple. I seem to always know when i install another to try, its like they are a virus. For me i like it just like anyone alse would who dont visit these forums, like nothings installed, dont ask questions and just works.
