    I'm glad to hear it, but at least when NS was first released there were mixed responses from the Symantec reps regarding how much credit they would give for the older licenses. Hopefully they have a consistent policy now, but I don't know that it's actually stated somewhere.

    I do think they mean real time protection offered by every weapon in the products arsenal,not just a simple scan and see what we detect type test,but as scanning results are what symantec and your site seem to disagree about its only fitting you interpret the initial statement you responded to in a way that suits you,isn't the fact they don't want to be inluded in simple scanning tests the reason they are not included in any tests on your site?

    the File-Detection test is since a while already not only an on-demand scan, it is real-time scan too (that's why e.g. Evogen works and comes into play as well).

    "isn't the fact they don't want to be inluded in simple scanning tests the reason they are not included in any tests on your site?"

    Yes, they were not included in previous years public main-test series due to that.
    Symantec participates in some of our other tests/reviews (which are not part of the public main-test series), including e.g. this public one: http://www.av-comparatives.org/business-review-october-2014/

    Though Norton don't have option to adjust insight detection like SEP, if you choose 'aggressive' in heuristic scan setting it affects also download insight. It is not documented but I know it from my experience,
    IOW, aggressive heuristic is not just enabling MalHeur hyper generic signature but it also make DL insight hypersensitive.

    I saw you posted that test in another old thread, but actually you should post all exploit tests performed this and last year:D. You'll see in all exploit tests, Norton/Symantec performs quite well. I suppose it is not widely recognized, but this is due to its quite strong network-based IPS (including browser protection). Another not widly known fact is Norton is one of the first consumer AV which adopted behavior-based anti-exploit called Un-Authorized Download Protection (UxP), though I think it is not as mature and effective as other following solution such as Kapsersky's AEP (3 year later than Norton).
    SEP's document says you can disable info submission "without any loss of protection".
    However, if too many people do this Norton's protection will definetely decrease. If you use and trust them, why don't cooperate for them to increase its accuracy? Caring about privacy? All PII will be striped, only one exception is username in path, how is it serious for you?

    IMO FDT is quite useful if user properly interpret and use the result. The most problem is many reader don't know about AV testing and current malware situation, thus simplistically conclude who got bad score in FDT is bad product. Though Symantec have never admitted, most probably they fear such misinterpretation to harm their business. I've saying to Symantec via feedback that they should come back to AVC test series and if they correctly keep to emphasize the importance of dynamic test, finally such ill effect by low FDT score won't be too much. Of course they don't and won't listen to it.

    Guys what do you think about this configuration?

    "Agressive Heuristics, Agressive Sonar, Sonar ask to remove, Low risk- Ask to remove, toolbar disabled"

    That's how I would run it msyfelf and with the family I have set it to remove automatically (SONAR and low risk) instead of ask. Additionally you might want to set the firewall to always ask with apps with unproven reputation.

    I did parse the data they send in community active, it's very well stripped, and anonymous. So I will turn it back on to help the collective.

    Just bought a 2 year license for Norton Security for only 89 USD rather than the usual $160 USD

    The discount can be availed like this:

    Login to your Norton Management page

    On the right hand, you will see a box which says offers, click it, then you will be able to make a purchase with a discount.

    I didn't have any subscriptions before, just bought this as my first

    That's a great tip! $89 for 10 machines/devices, for 2 years? That's a great deal.

    Found this;

    10 Devices Norton w/Backup for $44.00 (1 year)
    http://buy.norton.com/en-ca/mf/productDetails/MggKMzMxNTQwEyIyMDAxMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwNzczATowAw==/

    5 devices Norton $39.99 (1 year)
    http://buy.norton.com/en-ca/mf/productDetails/MggKMzMxMDQwEyIwMDAxMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwNzczATowAw==/

    I'm tempted to grab the 10 devices one to augment my current 5 device one, and just install Norton on all 15 devices in the home. Right now I augment it with ESET on machines we rarely use to use up that license, but I'd much prefer Norton on all of them.

    Based on the last few previous posts, apparently Norton Security includes a firewall in the set-up. If that's the case, does Norton still provide a stand alone anti virus/malware solution? Thanks in advance.

    why ouch? now you don't have to pay for the higher product (NIS) to have the firewall. I've never even gotten a notification from the firewall, it just silently works in the background. I don't even know its there

    With caution here, I'll divulge that my current firewall is Spyshelter. Why the caution? Wow, do some people get upset wit A vs B comparisons. Hey, TOS and with sound reason. Not to mention spinning this thread in other tangents in general. But enough about me and my lifetime license (sweet!) with Spyshelter. Just a little miffed that Norton wouldn't offer what an umpteen number of other competitors offer--> a stand alone anti virus/malware option. In order to go the Norton Security way, a lot of people would have to give up a firewall that may just happen to work exceedingly well for them. Forcing an unwanted firewall on prospective customers could and should be a bit alienating to say the least.

    I agree with you, I also would prefer if Norton did come with a custom installer (like I don't need this stupid Norton Identity Protection or Norton Toolbar) but according to my research, he Windows Firewall is more than enough these days with routers already having a firewall, and us having a good adblocker + Norton automatically scans for bad URLs I really don't see this a big of a deal.
    Offcourse it is your choice at the end by after I've tried every single AV out there, Norton is one of the few light ones that actually works without messing up with my system so we can't have a perfect product, but at least it remains as one of the useable ones.

    I'll second your findings on the efficacy of Windows Firewall. Regarding Norton Security's "take our firewall or be done with us.." Well, I'm sure their firewall is probably stellar. What's to do. C'est la vie. On that note-- good night, and Happy New Year to you and everyone here at Wilders!!

    Cheers

    With the toolbar disabled, I bet Scam Insight, phishing protection and warning of suspicious/malicious websites will not work. If you hide the toolbar instead, most/all of them will work.
