I'm considering doing it since like memory, the price of N routers keeps declining. Specifically, my question pertains to: speeds from an N router through Cat6 cable to a desktop PC? My ISP plan is 15 Mbps, however, I almost always test over 16.6. My current router is a Linksys WRT54GS (Tomato Firmware). This router is pretty old but I've never had an issue with it. Down stream my PC's CPU is an Ivybridge 3570K and a compatible (obviously) ASUS motherboard, a SSD and 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 RAM. I didn't purchase a graphics card when I built it, as the reviews for the INTEL 4000 integrated graphics were so positive, and indeed HD video always seems good. Lastly, wireless is only enabled when my adult children are visiting. Thank you for your opinion!
ratchet, If you buy a N router that supports Gigabit networking your cable speed for transferring data between computers will be up to ten times faster than your current 100 Mbit networking. Your internet speed will be unchanged. Using wireless to transfer data between computers will be around three times faster than your G wireless.
