If I understand this correctly, this is a web-based e-mail client? (Like thunderbird, only on the browser?)

Yes, I'm wondering, how is this an improvement over Thunderbird with PGP? Just easier to use?

How long did you have to wait? I just requested an account on Friday.

I have requested a ProtonMail account in July. No news till now, no updated info. Nothing.
I even wonder if they are still working on it...

Ah, I guess it's going to be a long wait. I think they're just overwhelmed with requests from all over the world.

On their blog there are recent posts, so it seems like they are working away: https://blog.protonmail.ch/

Yeah, I applied a looooong time ago. No idea how long. Just put it in and wait. It looks good. Hopefully alias' will be coming soon. I'll donate to keep them running, but I'll probably stay with Countermail.

I have toyed with the idea of using Countermail for a long time. They seem certainly like a more rigorous solution to privacy and security than ProtonMail. I wouldn't really compare the two. ProtonMail is opting for convenience and ease of use. CounterMail is more focused and making things as secure as possible, it allows "real" encryption with PGP to users outside the system also using PGP, it has many more features (two factor authentication, aliases), and so on.

My one hangup about Countermail is the java engine that it uses to launch in a browser. Putting aside java itself and all it's javaness, sometimes on my system (Linux) it just doesn't want to launch. This may entirely have to do with my system, but I hate to have an email service that some OS update is going to bork. It's not that reliable for me. But I still think one of these days I'll probably give Countermail a go.

That aside, I saw on ProtonMail's blog from three days ago (Dec 17) that they just finished their infrastructure build out, based on the funds they raised crowdsourcing months ago, and they now have a much more scalable server system. They say everyone on the waiting list should get their account within a month.

I just use the web to configure any CM options - I use Thunderbird and IMAP access with all keys stored locally. Thanks for the info on Proton Mail.

Yeah, I realize Thunderbird is a better way to do it, in many respects, including security. But I'd like to be able to count on using the web interface, when I need to.

I found protonmail the other week, and signed up to it. But from this thread, and the last news update on their site being June 17th, I guess it'll be a wait.

I also signed up for a PM account several days ago. I am hoping/assuming Proton Mail will be compatible with Thunderbird. If I recall correctly, I read elsewhere that Proton Mail will offer free accounts and will focus on ease of use with, of course, the option to send and receive both encrypted and un-encrypted mail. I'm such a newbie to mail encryption (and encryption in general) it really almost hurts. Gotta get started somewhere...
Since this is probably off topic, maybe Proton Mail's apparent potential popularity will warrant its own thread in the near future.

You need to follow their blog for up to date news. As I mentioned above, there was a post as recently as December 17, about their infrastructure expansion: https://blog.protonmail.ch/

I'm not sure, but from what I read on the website about how ProtonMail works, it sounds like you really have to use the web interface. I could be wrong though.
