Nice collection, aaa839 There are Pros and Cons in using different types of interaction and graphical styles. Some users like to see what the AV is doing on their system, some do not wan't to see anything. If there is a detection but no information, the customer might seek for his downloaded (suspicous) files or missing applications due to false positives and search for further help. Macstorm pointed out, "You see, it all comes down to people's preferences." +1 Security, Performance and ease of use are improved and evolving with different priority. Let's just say, the current GUI for Avira Free / Pro is not the last
word - modern PCs are full of ram and fast CPU, I have avira free and I don't even know its there, it auto updates and never had a virus (as I didn't had a virus with couple of other AVs over the years). Since WIN7 microsoft includes top firewall protection and top hips (UAC) protection. Old good KIS had great firewall and hips at least ten years before Microsoft (and some years before eset) and therefore was a very good value for the money back then. But now since microsoft includes these features in the price of windows, I personally only need a reliable AV, that microsoft also offers for free. I prefer install Avira because I found it more customizable than MS and has slightly better detection rates.
Can you please tell the source about the slightly better detection rates you are referring to? The comparison charts i saw this year (not only this year) showed a huge difference in terms of protection and a noticeable plus speaking for Avira.
I believe he says that he prefer to use Avira, because Avira is more tweakable than MS, and Avira has better detection rates than MS.
I think Cmhelper objected to the word 'slightly'; he believes Avira has 'significantly' better detection than MSE.
I know I've already said it, but I like the fact that Avira hasn't updated their GUI, I like the classic and simple look better than just about anything out there.
Avira looks terrible. Do what Trend did.. Pay a fairly small amount, and have a top graphic designer design the interface from the ground up. As it sits right now, Trend has the most impressive GUI in the world - IMO. No clue why companies don't do this.
No complaints here regarding the GUI. I find it very easy to navigate, and it lacks the big smilie face another vendor has.
please dont. i would much prefer the current gui to a new style one like trend. trend is nice and its not that i dislike it but i much prefer avira's
Same here... In my prospective our current GUI is quite nice and clean. But to be honest I'm using a Mac since about 15 years so also I'm not an expert in Windows look & feel ;-)
I couldn't care less about the GUI, as far as I'm concerned it is of marginal importance the way it is designed. I'd like to ask some of the Avira representatives who participate in this forum, how is Avira protecting itself from a direct attack, I was reading an article about bugs and flaws found in most AVs by a researcher, Joxean Koret " antivirus programs are as vulnerable to attacks as the applications they’re trying to protect and expose a large attack surface that can make computers even more vulnerable." (article kindly linked by Mayahana in another thread). Avira is also mentioned, however "Koret did not report the issues he found to all affected vendors, because he thinks that vendors should audit their own products and run bug bounty programs to attract independent research." Shame he didn't disclose all his findings... http://www.pcworld.com/article/2459...dled-with-security-flaws-researcher-says.html http://www.syscan360.org/slides/2014_EN_BreakingAVSoftware_JoxeanKoret.pdf
Hey... I'm in touch with the guys from our APL (Avira Protection Labs) and get back to you asap. Yours, Arthur
@Osaban Our APL guys already created a blog post about that case: http://blog.avira.com/breaking-antivirus-software/
Thanks, the reply isn't really very specific though. I'm not qualified to understand how attack surfaces can be exploited, but I do have experience on how to avoid infections. I could never trust an AV as my sole security layer. On the other hand for people who don't have an interest in security, I agree an AV is probably the best solution in most cases.
The Avira Product Version 14.0.7.468 (Update 7.2) released: Dec 5, 2014 Today, Dec 20 and the "Support - Latest News" page (which actually is a Changelog / Release Notes page) still remains with Avira Antivirus for Windows - Update 7.1 - Nov 2014 http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-latest-news Same story as usual, typically Avira style information for the users......
Well I totally agree with some points! I think "brain.exe" and a good AV software will catch up all dangerous threats...
Now in "Support - Latest News" page = Avira Antivirus for Windows - Update 7.2 - December 2014 Changelog Avira Antivirus for Windows - Update 7.2 Click on the link and you will find info for ...... 2014-11-04: Version 2014, Update 7.1 !!! Typically Avira style [mis]information for the users ............. and yes, I know the excuse is always the same: "But currently, it is complete available in the German version and synchronized for the English version very soon" ------------- Merry Christmas to all.
Why do i get a pop up box all time now......I tried offline installer for free. should i go to earlier version?..I dont want that box popping up asking to install etc...
Usually a nag convinces me NOT to buy the paid versions of software, but in this case with Avira Free, the nag is no big deal, just close it and it's gone. It doesn't even happen daily, just randomly....
its like this thing?. Maybe i get paid one then. http://www.davescomputertips.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/avira-scan-button.jpg
Not exactly.. that looks like the menu interface when you click the Avira icon, but mine is a bit different.. But no, that's not an ad....
As the Kerodo already said, this is not an ad. You don't have the plain Avira AV, you have the Avira Online Essentials thing..... =
