Member mantra recently suggested having one thread for Microsoft updates. Perhaps starting with next month's updates, we could have a thread called "Microsoft updates discussion thread" that would discuss both Microsoft security-related and non-security-related updates. If Microsoft security advisories are to be included as well, the thread could be called "Microsoft updates and security advisories discussion thread." Or instead Microsoft security advisories could be put in a thread called "Microsoft security advisories discussion thread."

What do you folks think about this idea?

A negative aspect of doing this is the consequences of the fact that Wilders stores each user's progress per thread for only the past 31 days, coupled with the fact that Microsoft's main updates arrive once a month. If you click on a thread that you haven't visited in the past 31 days, you're taken to the first post in the thread. If you click on the "Go to last unread thread" dot on a thread that you haven't visited within the past 31 days, it applies a heuristic to guess what your last unread post in the thread is, which could be different (and in some cases, very different) than your actual last unread post.

Another negative is the "monster thread" issue. As you know, we have some long term, ongoing threads for things like software product development. Those work because of the irregular nature of update releases, as well as the fact that it is the same, single software application being discussed. With the Microsoft updates, each month brings totally different and usually unrelated patches/updates. Mixing the discussion of every single update from every month, ongoing, could create a fairly complicated thread, with too much unrelated information. Some months have zero issues. Some months are down right terrible. Giving each month it's own thread seems like it'd do better than a single monster thread.

That would be fine with me also. How about this thread for next month: "Microsoft Updates for January 2015," which is for discussion of both security and non-security Microsoft updates, and also is the thread for discussion of related problems, instead of a separate "Bork" thread?

(Revisiting this topic...) The current solution - having a separate thread for each month - IMHO doesn't work well because:
    1. A linked article may mention updates from multiple months.
    2. A given update may have been issued one month but re-issued in another month.
    3. One has to do work (and have knowledge of how) to determine which month a given update belongs to.

My objection from post #9 seems irrelevant now because Microsoft seems to release updates every Tuesday.

I propose having a thread called "Microsoft updates discussion thread," and also closing the "Bork" thread. Any thoughts on this?

Are we going to keep using monthly threads (despite the issues I mentioned in the last post), or one thread?
