Well, Borkday is with us again! As usual I'll wait at least a fortnight before applying any borks patches.

These are mine, I haven't read about any problems yet with any of these.

 

I had six, plus six optional on x64 W7 SP1. With download speed of 20+Mbps and a SSD the whole affair (12 updts download, install and reboot) took less than five minutes. Of course my PC has only been active for five minutes since but seems quite normal!

 

To update or not to update...?? is the question every windows user ask every updates

 

Yeah, I started waiting a week recently, and I think I'll just continue doing it.

That's probably the prudent and best way to approach it anyway.

No, some of us quite happily install every update without waiting for feedback becuase we know the chance of there being any issues arising from installing updates is so close to zero, its not even worth worrying about.

 

I must admit, although I believe it is prudent to wait, I almost always install updates as soon as they become available, and I never seem to suffer any dire consequences.

 

Definitely. No reason to wait. I always install updates every second Wednesday morning a month and I never ended up having a botched system.

 

Yes, It's better to be safe than sorry. Especially with the recent spate of borked update patches.

Thankfully I only run one Windows computer now. My new laptop and my tablet run UNIX.

 

I'd like to run Linux in a VM on my laptop, but the keyboard won't work in the guest OS. VirtualBox or VMWare. Must be a Windows 8.1 issue, as I had never had this problem in the past on this same machine... anyway...

I'm testing the updates in a virtual machine (desktop host). Windows 8.1, Office 2013, Visual Studio 2012 (all had updates). It was almost 2 GB worth of files. It took almost 18 hours for the updates to finish. I'll see how it works over the next week before putting on real machines.

 

There's a bit of a trade-off involved in waiting... whatever issue the updates are addressing might affect you while you are waiting, unpatched. I think that in many cases, it comes down to who do you trust the most.

 

True, however, it seems far more likely these days that I will be affected by a bad patch vs. the exploit it is intended to protect me against. I can wait a week. It takes no longer to restore an image because of an exploited machine vs. restoring the same image to recover from a bad patch.

I needed a new laptop and ended up with a deal on a Lenovo preinstalled with Ubuntu. I could have got one with Win 7, but I wanted Linux.

 

I'll take my chances, MS aren't really dependable these days.

 

Agreed, but at this point, I will say that isn't Microsoft. If this month is like the last 4, I expect one of these patches to be recalled or updated with a week or so.

Installed mine yesterday and had no problem. I think having issues is just a recent phenomenon mostly. Prior to a few months ago, it was extremely rare to have a bad update. In the almost 20 years that I've been using Win, I have only had an update issue maybe once or twice. I'd say that's a pretty good record.

 

I often wonder what exactly is going on at Planet Microsoft these days. It'll be a long time before my confidence in their update patching is restored.

 

I'm guessing that when they laid off their last few batches of 3,000 employees at a time, that they cut personnel in some of these departments, including the people who work on and oversee the update processing. That's my best guess. They are cutting people quickly....
