Michael, I also did a quick test of HOT restores between v1.4.1.48b and v2.0.0.528 and there was a significant difference (30-sec vs 3.4-min). This was between the same (2) snapshots (small system change between snaps). Methinks their restoration method has changed significantly between v1 and v2... or there's some sort of issue in v2 with restoration.

    Oh Great Frog,

Are there situations on a computer, e.g., changes in drivers for this or that, that might necessitate a a new Warm Restore WinRE to be set up? Or that one would benefit from? Or are the drivers at any time the 1st warm restore occurs sufficient long-term?

I'm just doing some tests and see the following errors in the logs:
    Code:
    R:\AX64Backups\2082-52G\LOGS\2014-10-31.txt

    [1208:1212:1031/192427:ERROR:AXVolumeInfo.cpp(147)]GetVolumeInfo: GetStorageDeviceInfo error
I'm not sure what to make of all this. Is there somewhere to look up what these errors mean?

    Yes, your Chamliness :D...
Sure! But most Windows driver changes are minor in nature, and if the WinRE worked fine when it was created, not much functionality will be added by re-creation due to a driver update. If the update fixes some glaring error you've experienced, then a re-build of the RECOVERY MEDIA is probably warranted.

The only time I've considered re-building that media is when a new version of the app provides some significant additional functionality to the off-line restoration capacity... like maybe some super speed-up of the recovery process. When that happens, and before I install the app update, I remove the RECOVERY MEDIA from the BOOT MGR, install the app update, then re-install the RECOVERY MEDIA. That insures I get the app update into the specially created RECOVERY MEDIA (WinRE).

Also, sometimes during a major Windows update (W8.1.1 for example), Windows will change its installed WinRE and you should consider using that RE in the creation of an updated AX RECOVERY MEDIA (it'll happen if you unINSTALL/reINSTALL AX's RECOVERY MEDIA following the update).

It's hard to keep track of all this stuff. Suffice it to say that if the original RECOVERY MEDIA worked well, it will continue to work well without all these updates... the updates are just house cleaning.

There's always errors of some sort (mostly benign) in their logs. We have asked since the product introduction in January 2013 for those references... alas, to no avail.

The logs are for "their" perusal (if necessary), not ours. I ignore them unless there's a problem.

Thank you for that very ribbeting response!

How does one remove the recovery media from the boot manager? (Win 7)

Well... I stand a bit corrected (after some testing). The WARM restore RECOVERY image is generated from scratch each time a WARM restore is requested, placed in the BOOT MGR, executed upon reBOOT and removed following a successful WARM restoration. Based on this, the WARM restore environment will always be as up to date as the LIVE Windows system.

If you installed the standard RECOVERY MEDIA in the BOOT MGR via (in v2) the "Backup Tools" TAB, "Rescue Media Builder/Startup Manager/Install (as a Local Storage startup option), this needs to be uninstalled from the same place prior to an app update (or major driver update) and re-installed following the app update... if you want to maintain the most up-to-date local storage RECOVERY MEDIA.

Now there's a statement I can't agree with. :D Also, if those kind of errors are benign then maybe the devs should not list them as errors.

And if we were as smart/knowledgeable/capable as the devs then we would be writing the code,,,,,, but we are not the developers are we? Our function is to use/test the program, theirs to develop/improve it.

So I disagree with your statement about froggies statement.

We do not need to know what the logs mean since it does not enable us to do anything whatsoever. That they have meaning for the devs is beyond question. In short if you have a problem send the logs to the devs, if you cannot be bothered then simply stop using the program. These devs have been much more engaging with us than any devs I have ever encountered and yet, for some, its not nearly enough.

    Hi all,

I am not sure that it has been covered before : is there any incompatibility with Raxco Instant Rescue & AX TMv 2. I guess no, except it will increase the size of the images but apart from that, I guess not. But of course, if I ask the question here it's because I don't really know.

    Thanks for any info.

Not really an incompatibility, but you have be careful of the order you do things, or will be constantly rebuilding AXTM's tracking file. I played with it a while, and in the end I decided it wasn't worth it. For me it ended up IR being the better way to go.

Thanks for this point of view. I keep having freezes with AX64TM V2 and it begins to be annoying. I have reported twice this issue, present with various builds, and I got no feedback so far from them (my support request is quite recent though).

So, are you using Raxco InstantRescue full time now?
What do you think of it? Reliable?

Yes I am, and It is totally reliable. I've been using it since it's predecessor FDISR. It just works.

Hi Pete, could I trouble you for a list of the differences between Ax/TM and Raxco Instant Rescue. From the publishers description it sounds similar to Ax/TM but I expect there are differences. Something highlighting these differences would be appreciated.

Pete, you've certainly piqued my curiosity! However, it may not be appropriate to get into the details of IR in this thread. I don't want to derail the thread.

At the same time, I'm wondering if you could discuss the difference between IR, AX64, standard imaging programs (like Macrium Reflect), and Rollback Rx. When do you use IR? Is it like AX64 in terms of being able to go forward and backwards "in time"? Or, is IR more like a beefed up System Restore? Can you use IR for testing software?

If I need to create a new thread for this topic, please let me know.

    Hi Alex

Why don't you start a thread in the First Defense - ISR forum. That would probably be the best place to address this for you.

Why not start a "Raxco InstantRescue" thread, Pete. ;)

It's the first time that I have heard of this.

If it is inappropriate to talk about RIR here it would be equally inappropriate to start a Rx/TM Raxco thread over in the FD-ISR forum. Besides, we are considering AX/TM in comparison to something else,,,,its similarities and differences to RIR, so talking about it here it should not be a problem. I would suggest that you would be the ideal person to quickly outline the differences and similarities as you are very familiar with both programs.

One thing for sure RIR is not an imaging program. Its a snapshot program that should be used in conjunction with a standard imaging program,,,,at least thats what they say in the FAQ on the Raxco site. I was unable to determine if individual files and folders could be recovered from its snapshots. The snapshots are stored on the protected drive unlike AX/TM. Frankly it sounds more like RollBack Rx to me, hopefully their support is better than HDS's
