I just tried MVPS and even when disabling ABP, I got no ads only the annoyances of Facebook since I had the block facebook annoyances filter in ABP (that annoying pages you may like on the right) but other than that, would it be better for me to rely on MVPS alone? That would probably speed up my browsing right since there are no2 lists to check but just MVPS?
I use ABP with MVPS Hosts file. MVPS hosts file cannot block all ads, for example the ads that are hosted on the same domain as the website will be allowed through by MVPS. Only way to block such ads is through ABP.
I know a few of you guys on here like to mess with your hosts file, but I don't bother and don't have any ads or any problem with just using ABP. I use three filter subscriptions and don't get any ads. These are the three that I use in Firefox. EasyList Adblock Warning Removal List Fanboy's Annoyance List
^You make it sound like using a custom hosts file is a very hard job! Requiring hours of work! All you have to do is that once a month you need to copy/paste a new Hosts file and overwrite the older one. That is it. After that use your PC normally as you would do if you had a default Hosts file. Doesn't seem a very hard job to me and you get a foolproof extra layer of security.
Not hard at all. Just so unnecessary and so old school, in my opinion. I used to play the hosts file game many years ago.
What does the "Adblock Warning Removal List" do? I enabled it, and still get warnings from a few sites that I am using an Adblocker and it might reduce my experience LOL
Well the facebook ads are a killer so I had to reenable ABP. you know thos large ads on the right that say Pages you may like, horrible!
It's imperfect like all blacklists, but less effective than mature adblockling lists being relatively new.
For me MVPS caused noticeable slow down even after disabling DNS Client service. And I still need ABE and HTTPSB anyway, as they can also make 'cosmetic ad blocking' and also they have each regional filter. In my web browsing I come across many ads if w/out those regional filter.
Can you give me an example how can I see this slow down? Mind you, I applied the following registry trick a suggested by MVPS: "A better workaround would be to add two Registry entries to control the amount of time the DNS cache is saved. (KB318803) Flush the existing DNS cache (see above) Start > Run (type) regedit Navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters Click Edit > New > DWORD Value (type) MaxCacheTtl Click Edit > New > DWORD Value (type) MaxNegativeCacheTtl Next right-click on the MaxCacheTtl entry (right pane) and select: Modify and change the value to 1 The MaxNegativeCacheTtl entry should already have a value of 0 (leave it that way) Close Regedit and reboot ..."
You can actually leave the above two registry keys on their default value. I have the DNS service enabled, and the keys set to their default value for over a year and I have not noticed any slowdown on my windows 7 PC with MVPS Hosts file. And my PC is 6 years old.
A Browser based ad-blocking application and subscription lists are not a substitute for a comprehensive Hosts file. Most use both but do not confuse the two.
