As for Qihoo, they are pretty open about keeping sensitive stuff safe and secure.
And, they do not share info to US intelligence agencies, which is already a big plus!

What about when you login to certain sites , like your bank account, VISA, Paypal?

 

I have been using 360IS almost a year, does online shopping, there is no extra charges from china from paypal or visa.

1: There is a privacy diclamer on their website.
2: You can contact privacy guy directly and ask him yourself all your concerns.
3: ~500 million users, someone would notice by now if there is a malicious practice with user data
4: As for passwords, you use LastPass or free alternative. If there are heavy banking operations, bootable Linux and you're in the clear.

 

Every other company which offers a free antivirus has a purpose:

Avira offers a free AV and hopes to convince you to buy a full subscription for the paid one
BitDefender , the same
Avast! , the same

Only Qihoo offers a very powerful antivirus FOR FREE, not asking anything in exchange. This doesn't make sense from a business point of view.
So ,what do we offer, in exchange for this, almost perfect, antivirus

I think right now, they want to build their name in the international market first. few years down the road, then you will see paid porducts.

Personally I don't think there's anything to worry about, and while I may ditch 360 soon, it will only be to try a different antivirus as I am always trying out different software, not due to any doubts about 360.

If I didn't feel the need to constantly try out new software, I would have no reason at all to ditch 360, as it excellent in my opinion.

 

Nothing is going trial/shareware/time limit etc...
How they monetize their business?
Ads? Lots of ads on their search engine, games platform, and many other things available for Chinese users.
At the moment int users are not in that range.

Why don't you ask them yourself so you can decide for yourself whether there are any privacy violations on their part or not?
Go to their Google+ page or drop a line @ and then act

These questions are not to be asked or answered; just use your best judgment:

If 360 has already 500 mil. customers , the time "to build their name" is long gone.If they would ask $5/ year (and a lot of people would pay) that would be $2.5 BILIONS. But they are not asking; somehow they make more if you just simply use their software .
There are no "free meals" in this world and I try to avoid "getting things" for which I do not know what or when I am going to pay..

 

Yes, that's what I was eluding to in the other 360 thread. Does anyone expect Qihoo, or any other company, to readily admit to wrong doings? Asking them is kind of pointless.

 

500 mil customers are from china. Outside of china, they are unheard of. That is why they need to build their name globally. Same thing. If they asked for USD5/year, I would gladly pay them.

I find they 500mil number to be very doubtful. Seriously, isn't that like 7% of the worlds population? No way I believe that.

 

Please read few posts back about how they make income.
As for privacy, they are a MAJOR Microsoft security partner/contributor [those patches/fixes you receive, a handful comes from them. also continuous xp protection. it would be unwise to destroy all that hard work and reputation by misusing user privacy data.].
I am not saying they are not collecting private data, I'm saying they are not mishandling it. In fact, all uploaded stuff that goes to Qihoo is highly encrypted and secured against outside threat vectors, so no worries there. Again, contacting them about your concerns is not a stupid advise, but if you are already sceptic to just about anything, nothing I can do.

Avast did, in their own way of speaking. After they were concerned about a reputation from a blog writing or something....

496 million to be exact in June 2014..... And not unheard, they expanded their ops into Brasil.
As to building their name globally, they already did....

If yes than you are doing it wrong because you also forgot to mention the tons of free software available (Freeware) since the beginning of the internet, the millions of Open Source software available and HOSTED for Free on SourceForge, GitHub ...etc..like 7-Zip - with 392.4 million downloads or VLC media player downloaded for other 800 million times, not to mention other uber popular Freeware software like Irfanview, VMware Player, and so on. And yes, I know that 360 TS is not Open Source but still, like I already said there's a lot of freeware software available on the internet that doesn't ask you for money. Even my reply here is written using Firefox, another free software that didn't asked me to pay for it.

It is 2014 folks, maybe it's time to stop to believe in other 50 years of propaganda bull, and start to breath some FREE, fresh air from all over the world not only from USA and Russia. After all we are living in the new Era of Globalization, don't we? The cold war is over (or maybe not). How many Chinese companies with the same size of SONY has been caught using rootkits to spy their users? How many Chinese companies big like Google - Gmail has been ''forced'' by NSA to spy on your emails? And no, I'm not anti USA, Russia or Germany, I just believe in freedom of choice and the freedom of being free.

The only difference is that all these companies would offer THEIR IN-HOUSE DEVELOPED software for free; MBAM offers MBAM free, Avira offers Avira free, BitDefender offers BitDefender free.

Qiiho bought two very powerful engines (Avira and BD) , packed them together and the pack is being offered to you for "free"!!!!! This is uncommon and unheard of, and should normally raise suspicions .

I wouldn't be surprised if Qiiho pays royalties, per install, for both Avira and BD.

So, why free though?

 

Qihoo pays BD/AV usage licences [hence limited update capability]. Baidu, another China's giant does the same. So it is not uncommon and unheard of, at least in the eastern hemisphere.
Same with their cloud service offering 36TB free cloud storage, while Mega offers 50 GB free storage. They just do things differently.
Again, they have another source of income, and not everything in this world has to cost money.
Another philosophy, another culture, another everything.
If you are suspicious of effectiveness/privacy/whatever, you are free to switch to paid alternatives:
- Kaspersky
- Norton
- Panda
- BitDefender
- Avira
- TrendMicro
- ZoneAlarm
- Agnitum
- Avast
- Emsisoft
- ESET
- Vipre
- Comodo paid version
etc... So in the end, no one is forcing you to use free suite having all-in-one package.... Oh, did I forgot to mention FREE FOREVER?

 

There are bunch of free AV with BitDefender engine. So, why free though ?

 

I've switched to a different antivirus for the time being. After having 360 installed for a while, it was slowing down my computer, even when using the lowest protection level. My normally fast computer was running noticably slower. For example when scrolling through a webpage at Wilders with the page up or page down keys, there would be a very slight delay.

I uninstalled 360 to see if it was the cause, and a while after uninstalling, my computer ran as fast as it should again, even though I haven't done the required reoboot after removing 360 IS. For the record my current laptop has a very old 32 bit processor, so is very much lacking in processing power. But, despite this, with no antivirus installed, Windows 7 runs quite fast on it except when I running low on RAM.
