More borked MS Patches http://www.infoworld.com/article/28...ed-patch-kb-2949927-re-issues-kb-2952664.html Interesting note at end of the article:
re "Automatic Update is for chumps." Well, it shouldn't be, because it's kind of vital if you don't want to get instapwned. A modern OS, especially one that costs money, should be expected to update itself automatically without breaking. Loads of Linux servers running cron-apt would tend to agree with me...
Since I installed KB 2949927, the predetermined media player was changed from MPC-HC (Media Player Classic) to WMP (Windows Media Player). After I changed it back manually, it automatically reverted to WMP. I uninstalled KB 2949927 and the problem dissapeared.
I should be able to walk the streets of any city at night safely. Not reality and neither is auto updating. I turn off auto updates and then after patch tuesday wait a week to see what happens. Then I image and install the updates a few at a time.
After some research of the monthly patches, I still pick and choose the updates I only deem necessary, and I've never been pwned. I'm 100% confident in my approach and it's never failed me yet.
This is a workable strategy on a home desktop, not so much for an office. Also, I mentioned Linux and cron-apt because that's an example of auto-updates not breaking anything over a long period. Even granted that Linux release cycles are typically shorter than Windows, so there's less stuff to break. I tend to expect a lot from software that I pay large sums of money for.
Microsoft are clearly missing something - millions would like to know what it is. Some with Windows 8.1 that saw their entire operating systems bricked as a direct result of bad Bork Tuesday Patches probably have an even higher expectation of MS at this point. Wilders should probably start a new sub Forum called Bork Tuesday - Black Tuesday.
