I have always bought Norton very cheap from Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, etc.. I just checked, and I have five unactivated license keys for Norton. Of course now that they no longer allow them to be used on the latest version, these are mostly worthless. But as I stated I got most of them for free. Maybe one or two I paid $5 for.

Now I have a free license from beta testing and can get it free from my ISP.

One of the reasons Norton decayed non-2015 licenses was to prevent all of these stockpiled, discounted/cheap licenses from being sold/used on their newest products. They drew the line with 2015, and if you think they are going to go back to the deeply discounted model you are probably in for a surprise. Trend still honors old licenses, but this has been a subject of contention, and likely they won't keep allowing old versions to be activated on new versions.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "they drew the line". The licenses people stockpiled were legal right? Symantec made money from selling them, one way or another, and they openly supported the use of older licenses on current versions. If they're unhappy now because their previous policies didn't make them enough money why should that be the user's problem?

Exactly. All my licenses are legit, not from Ebay, etc... As I've stated, I would never pay more than $15 or so for any AV. If Norton is going to screw people over on existing licenses, that is even more reason I will not give them any money. Contrary to Mayahanas beliefs, I do not see this build of Norton as that large of a change over the last. Sure they tweaked the GUI a bit, tried to improve protection just like ANY OTHER AV company does. There is no justification to burn people who have existing licenses.

And when there are 3-5 free products available that protect just as well, why pay $80? I fully expect come tax season, the usual "Buy Turbotax get Norton AV free after rebate" type deals will be around. I can buy a copy of Windows for $100, and it will last me 5-10 years, including updates. But AV can get away changing almost the same price per year? No way.

Stockpiled cheap licenses were sold for those specific versions. When you purchased a $5.00 license for Norton 2012, you purchased Norton 2012, why would anyone expect to be able to use that for any future versions? It seems unreasonable to me, and a poor decision for a business to allow that sort of thing to continue. If you buy Office 2010 you can't expect your keys to work on Office 2013. Consumers need to reign in their expectations to reasonable levels. A customer that 'will only' pay $5-$10 for a product isn't what a software company wants anyway, but there will always be cheap solutions for cheap people, and expensive solutions for those that demand the best. That's why we have BMW's and Ford Focus's in life.

I honestly don't care about losing my licenses. I just don't think Norton is the screaming deal you do. And I think all paid AVs are going to have to count of the corp side to make their money. Feel free to buy your "BMW" lol.

FYI: The Newegg special is $69.96 (not $59.95) for the version with backup and 10 devices.

NS w/o backup and for 5 devices is $59.95.

That's for the non-back-up version...If you look down at the reviews, the only review by a verified Amazon purchaser says there is a problem with the license key he received from Amazon--it doesn't work. He had to call Norton support and they were still working on resolving the problem when he wrote the review, Looks like ATM it's too risky to buy it from Amazon.

It's too early to get a good deal for NS and NSwB. Norton released these produces less than a month ago. I got a 1-year license for NS for only $39.99 from Staples last week.

Exactly my thoughts irrespective of the choice of AV. I have 5 machines and 3 smartphones in my household (for 3 adults), only 2 computers have an AV installed (I could easily have them all running a paid AV). I have never paid more than $10-$15. I think this is the right price, and it has nothing to do whether I can/can't afford to pay more. I know some people in the excitement of buying a new machine worth maybe $1,400 or more, they won't hesitate to spend another $50-$60 for a "top" AV as a form of insurance, and that's where probably Symantec is heading to make quite a bit of money especially considering that most new computers (at least here in Seoul) come with Norton pre-installed.

Another verified purchaser on Amazon is having a trouble with NSwB license:

    That should get you thinking.

Symantec's getting none of my money, and for reasons I have previously described, I'd advise users against buying Symantec products for the near future (things may stabilize later).

I'm sorry but I feel you're continuing to put the wrong spin on this. People's expectations were based on Symantec's policy. They openly supported upgrading to newer versions - in fact built it into the UI of the products - so please don't imply that the problem now is people have unreasonable expectations. The ethical thing to do IMHO would be to honor the previous policy and let people use up their licenses.

    I agree 100 percent.

At the very least, Symantec should have had a grace period to activate the unknown amount of legitimate keys on their latest product NS. Then after the grace period is over no more activations. Instead, Symantec chose the greedy corporate route which is an obvious choice. I have been a long time customer of Symantec products, but the line has to be drawn some where.

    Agree. :thumb:

Let me put a different spin on this fiasco. Has Norton thought about all the people out there that are using their product that are computer illiterate? No. Think of all the elderly that are using Norton 2014 that came with their computers and never visit a security forum. They are stuck with no upgrade. My son bought me a new computer last year and he added a 3 year license from Norton. So now Norton want's me to buy a 1 year license to upgrade while I have almost 2 years left on this license. :thumbd: Sure I visit security forums and can buy a license, but I'm not. Think of old mom and pop that don't know much about security and their computers have over a year left on a license. They're stuck with 2014. Norton should grandfather the old licenses that are in use today with a FREE upgrade not losing any days. PERIOD!

I received a surprise email from the Norton Forums Global Community Manager about receiving a free license key for the latest Norton Security with back-up. I briefly tested the beta product in the middle of the testing period after going through some hurdles trying to use a different email/username, etc. I have until May 7, 2015 until my current license expires from the old security software. It would be even better if they just transfer my remaining days to the new key and get it done with now!

Me too. Seriously a 10-user key that is valid for one year!!!

Now I feel kinda guilty for not providing that much feedback during the beta testing period.

I have just had a second free license for beta testing (not going to use it - what can I do with a total of 20 user keys, I only have 3 PC's) but they say it has to be activated by 31st Dec 2015 so it looks like you have plenty of time. :)

because at that time norton offered FREE upgrades to the newest version. they clearly advertised this and they told people this. plain and simple. i am also in the camp that they screwed people on this. i know guys that own shops locally who bought from a LEGIT distributor (boxed versions) and they have a pile of them now that are garbage. my local staples has a load of old boxes so does wal mart (my cousin is a store manager and is well aware of this because people are trying to return them). they never once came out and said you can upgrade ONLY if you pay full price. i am lucky enough to only still have a handful in stock and i would never bring them back into my shop after this. i will not be one who will get stuck with them. when my distributors offer me a great deal on LEGAL boxed versions normally i would have stocked up. im really glad i skipped norton this time.

any company that goes that way will loose MANY customers. and i do not at all think everyone will go this way. many have clearly said they will not be doing this. all one has to do is read around the web and you can see they are loosing people left and right.

i 100% agree. even though i do like this new version. i will never give them a dime again if they do not change their tune on things like this (and i buy A LOT of product not only for clients but for myself. between home and my own offices (3 separate business'), and family members i buy somewhere around 200+ lic's a year, some for multiple years.

I decided to do the Live Norton chat and I had a nice tech to help transfer my remaining days to my brand new one year Norton Security with Back-up license. I now have over 500 days left on my current license now. I wish all the Norton techs were this helpful! I guess time will tell if this new product is worthy for a renewal when the time comes. Hopefully, they will be more focused and more customer friendly if they decide to split up with the main company.
